The Trump administration sued California for allegedly failing to join an effort to remove purported non-citizens from the state’s voter rolls, the latest escalation in the federal government’s clash with Democratic-led states in the run-up to the Nov. 3 midterm elections.

The Justice Department suit was filed Thursday in Los Angeles. The government is seeking a court order barring California from counting such ballots until the individuals’ citizenship status can be verified.
