Miscellaneous / Others Japanese scientists have developed a revolutionary injection that may extend a cat's life from the usual 15 years to nearly 30.

Post image

The therapy, created by the AIM Institute of Medicine under Dr. Toru Miyazaki, targets chronic kidney disease, a leading cause of death in older cats.It uses a specialized protein to help macrophages clear waste from the kidneys, partially restoring their function and slowing kidney failure.

Cool, now do dogs and please hurry mine are 12 this year.

u/JefferyTheQuaxly Aug 05 '26

There already is a pill in development to potentially help extend the life of dogs, it works differently though, research shows that when you starve the body it slows down cellular aging and helps people and animals live longer. this medication for dogs is just tricking the body's cells into thinking its being starved, even when the dog is eating food normally. it is unnoticeable by the dog but can potentially extend an average dog's lifespan by several years. probably will not be available to the market for another 4-6 years though.

u/Corgi_Koala Aug 05 '26

Probably too late for my Biscuit, even if he makes it another 4 he'll be old and worn down.

60

u/Legionof1 Aug 05 '26

Apparently you can just starve him!

35

u/Tcloud Aug 05 '26

Dog food companies hate this one trick!

13

u/Corgi_Koala Aug 05 '26

He would not like that one bit haha

4

u/punksmostlydead Aug 05 '26

I mean, if he's anything like mine he already thinks you're starving him, no matter how much you feed him. 🤣

Eli Lilly wants to know your location

He will be. But he's gonna demand a lot of snackos as back payment.

2

u/oopserv_ Aug 12 '26

Never know. My 16 yr old dog is in good shape. Can still run stairs. Just has some skin allergies.

1

u/Corgi_Koala Aug 12 '26

He's already having some health issues but I just focus on enjoying the time I have with him.

Is this real? I know I have heard of ā€œautophagyā€ but idr why I assumed it was pseudoscience. Would love to see it though!!

7

u/whatever Aug 06 '26

It is.. Autophagy itself is fairly well studied. The iffy part around it in longevity circles is that one of the most popular off-label drugs known to induce autophagy is rapamycin, which has been around a while but lacks must needed research funding due to its lack of patentability and therefore lack of potential to monopolize profits.

Longevity bros just end up YOLO-ing rapamycin as best as they can figure it out, and hope the weird side effects are worth it.

Meanwhile, pharma bros are working on literally anything else that induces autophagy, which is what Loyal is doing here. It's a bit weird, but it's still useful work in the long run.

3

u/InstantSword Aug 06 '26

You probably know this, but just for others, you can reliably induce autophagy for fasting as little as 16 hours. Higher up to a certain point even 3 days has even more effects

u/Relevant-Diamond2731 Aug 05 '26

Ugh my dog is 8. Needs to hurry up

7

u/SaveLansingParks Aug 05 '26

It's already here. Loyal (the company) has already released two different versions of the drug with a third on the way. LOY-001 is the injection for big dogs. LOY-002 is the pill form for small dogs. LOY-003 is the pill form for big dogs that will hopefully get conditional approval this year.

5

u/Relevant-Diamond2731 Aug 06 '26

Not available to the market according to their website. Don’t have conditional fda approval and still in technical studies

2

u/Punktur Aug 06 '26

Loy-002 seems to be for 14+ pounds, is there nothing for lighter ones?

3

u/ProbingYourProstate Aug 06 '26

I hate how dogs have such a short lifespan, we have to worry about it when they're 8 years old... I have two dogs, both 8 years old and it's just painful how quickly they age

4

u/Relevant-Diamond2731 Aug 06 '26

Luckily you would never know my dog is 8. People still think she’s a puppy even at 50 pounds

1

u/Wyatt_Ricketts Aug 08 '26

Same my little bro never lost the pup.in him and the shelter we adopted him from had him clipped and I want his puppys so bad he's 9 to 11 I want him to make it too 18 at least if give almost anything

5

u/threzk Aug 05 '26

Are you saying the fat shots for people are going to make people live longer

9

u/2024-YR4-Asteroid Aug 05 '26

Probably yes. Considering the most common causes of death in the elderly are heart or neuro related and it massively decreases the prevalence of both. It to mention is overall lowers inflammation which contributes to tons of comorbidities. .

8

u/Snuggly-Muffin Aug 05 '26

I mean of course being slimmer when you're obese will very likely extend your life

1

u/RealInside4908 Aug 06 '26

genuine question: what are fat shots? lmao

1

u/threzk Aug 06 '26

Haha ozempic and the others

-9

u/katiecatsweets Aug 05 '26

What a terrible way to phrase that. Shame on you.

2

u/threzk Aug 05 '26

It’s just a joke friend. I’m more making fun of the fact that this point makes them seem like the elixir of life lol.

2

u/Paratwa Aug 05 '26

Ozempic for dogs man. Hah!

1

u/ProbablySlacking Aug 05 '26

Really? My dogs always think they’re starving.

1

u/Any_Instruction5382 Aug 05 '26

So when does this get designed for humans?

1

u/SaveLansingParks Aug 05 '26

It's already here. Feel free to post my comment in an edit for visibility so dog owners with older dogs learn that they can go to the vet today to inquire about it.

1

How the fuck am I supposed to give that mutt a pill tho...he's impossible lmao.

1

u/Brzhk Aug 05 '26

Tricking a dog into starving... Jeezus i predict side effects on the market for kitchen refurbishing

5

u/reverendmoss Aug 05 '26

My dog already claims he’s always starving. This would put him over the edge

3

u/skitch23 Aug 05 '26

One of my dogs would have you convinced she has never been fed a day in her life.

0

u/not_me_nope_never Aug 05 '26

I have always looked at the people and creatures in my life as an experience and journey to learn. Sometimes for them sometimes for me.

Had one of those that have passed on still be here the next one would most likely never come into my life and or the stupidity of my mother's absolute selfishness would still be ongoing. šŸ˜–

I really wish we focused on quality over quantity. Death is normal, acceptable and can motivate the living (in the positive if they so choose.)

Mine is a 17 year old beagle :(

10

u/CommercialDonkey9468 Aug 05 '26

That's an incredible age, how is he doing? I have a beagle

3

u/SweatyBoi5565 Aug 05 '26

Not feeling so down about my nearly 10 year old beagle now.

1

u/urethral_needle Aug 05 '26

Our girl Sadie was a month shy of 17. It’s heartbreaking watching them get old

10

u/Playful-Ad-6475 Aug 05 '26

Mine is 9 year old and I'm already scared every day. Please GOD. please japan make this for dogs too.

2

u/SaveLansingParks Aug 05 '26

I've posted this a couple times for visibility. Go talk to your vet today about Loyal's three treatments (2 are available now). Good luck with your pooch ā¤ļø

Enjoy them while you can friend!

4

1

u/SaveLansingParks Aug 05 '26

Take a look at my old comment so you can ask your vet today about these treatments.thatnare already here and available for your pooch! Here's my comment:

I came here to say the exact same thing. šŸ¤žšŸ¤ž

1

u/canman7373 Aug 05 '26

There will come a time when they will make puppies and other animals that will never age and live very long lives. Seems immoral and unethical. But tell me you wouldn't line up to buy a baby bear or elephant that never ages?

1

u/OrdinaryImportance94 Aug 05 '26

Oh good. I am relieved someone said it and I don't have to. But dogs really don't stay around long enough. Mine just turned 6 and I am already worried about the day I have to say good bye to him. Some more years would be amazing.

1

u/According_Lab_6907 Aug 05 '26

No worries this, like any human breakthru health innovation, will get buried and never to be seen again.

1

u/Motor-Illustrator226 Aug 06 '26

If a breakthrough seems to exist but then isn’t followed up by further news, it often means it failed phase 2 or 3 testing. I.e. it seemed like a breakthrough on a Petri dish, but when it was rolled out to animal models or did first human safety testing, it failed. It’s not some conspiracy — this is just good science. It’s slow, but that’s how we make sure we don’t do harm.Ā

1

u/AK_Sole Aug 05 '26

Yes, please!
Mine is 15.
I don’t know how much more time we have together…and that sucks!

My golden retriever died at nearly 11 years old last month. Its a shame their quality of life declines fast when they’re older, at least for big dogs

1

u/jradio Aug 06 '26

Just tonight my brother's little dog went to the vet. They think possible virus attacking the kidneys, and prescribed different medicines. If there isn't improvement by Monday, then they believe it's CKD. He's only 10 and still a little puppy. Please hurry.

1

u/The_Countess Aug 06 '26

Unfortunately for your dog, this only fixes a specific problem cats have with kidney failure that is not found in dog or humans.

Cats have a broken gene that normally helps clean up the kidney, but because they don't live long enough in nature to benefit from it, the broken gene could spread through the population without being selected against. this might have already happened before the domestic cat even arose.

0

u/Rpark888 Aug 05 '26

How pissed would you be if you were like 75 years old and then suddenly, someone somewhere, against your will, made you live another 80 years????

Just fucking leave nature alone.

-3

u/Rauschbaum Aug 05 '26

You already can clone it for around 90k in South akorea i thknk.

6

u/Impossible_Lab_9493 Aug 05 '26

Wouldn't be the same. Might look the same and mostly act the same, but nope.

4

u/thedeuce75 Aug 05 '26

Yeah, I've thought about cloning. It just seems really kind of selfish when there are so many none cloned dogs out there that need rescuing.
