Social media has fragmented human society

It's a tedious repetition of "Gilded Age"-era corruption, not something new.

Not everything is about social media and "those damned kids, and their phones!".

Except in the Gilded Age the robber barons had far less control over the flow of information.

no one is talking about kids and their phones here. That is a different problem.

When OP said "social media has fragmented human society", kids and their phones are implicitly part of that. The vast majority of social media activity is phone-based and much has been written about how kids today conduct so much of their lives online and on screens instead of in person.

Yes but that is not this topic. The problem is narratives posted by bots and misinformation completely destroying our society.

What do kids on their phone have to do with society being fragmented?

The ever-increasing gap between the rich and the everyone else and the inability of the latter to live a fulfilling life as a result has fragmented society way more that social media ever could.

They did it with religion, they did it with news presses, radio, television and now internet.

The medium was never the cause, just the symptom, humans being shit is the issue and always has been.
