Doctor Who Where should I start? The ultimate guide.

So, you've heard a lot about Big Finish, and want to know how to begin. This guide will aim to give you as much information as possible about the best places to truly begin.

Key points:

1) You should probably start with free stories, to make sure you can enjoy the format. Audio drama is not for everyone.

2) While there are many stories that you can listen to and understand completely with little or no context, some stories are more natural "start" points because they point you towards another story.

3) This is actually a difficult question, but this guide will focus on simple answers to avoid overwhelming as far as possible.

4) To keep this guide as evergreen as possible, it will mostly look at older starting points that are less likely to be affected by new stories or re-evaluated by future listeners as actually not that great. (As an example, Series 10 of New Who was initially regarded as a good starting point while it was airing... but then it brought back two versions of the Master and used the word "Mondasian" unironically, making it slightly less friendly to newcomers.)

Free Stories

There are two types of free story. The first is the stories available for free through libraries and streaming services - if your library already pays for Big Finish, or you already have a Spotify subscription, these stories are effectively free for you. The second type is truly free stories, which Big Finish very kindly make available here so that people can check their ability to download things before buying.

The "truly free" stories are mostly part 1s or excerpts, not complete stories. That said, the excellent short story "The Word Lord" is available for free here. Another excellent short story, "Urgent Calls", is available on Big Finish's SoundCloud here.

If you subscribe to a good music streaming service - Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Music, Tidal, Deezer, and so forth - you should be able to access Big Finish stories by searching for "Doctor Who". Some ideal starting points on these services include:

  • "The Marian Conspiracy" - the start of the Sixth Doctor's travels with Evelyn, which are both enjoyable in their own right and intertwine with an excellent Seventh Doctor arc. Guide to the two arcs here.

  • "Storm Warning" - you've heard about the Eighth Doctor. This is the start of his travels with Charley, and by extension most of his Big Finish stories. Guide to the Eighth Doctor here.

  • "Eye of the Scorpion" - the start of an arc featuring the Fifth Doctor, Peri, and Ancient Egyptian companion Erimem. Guide here.

Or do you just want to experience the best-of-the-best without worrying too much about arcs? Well, try these stories - again, free on music subscription services:

  • "Spare Parts" - cliché for a reason, this is a story featuring Five and Nyssa and the Cybermen.

  • "Jubilee" - a thematically heavy Dalek story featuring Six and Evelyn, which got writer Rob Shearman the job of writing the first Dalek story of New Who. "Dalek" is a good story... "Jubilee" is much, much better.

  • "The One Doctor" - comedic story featuring the Sixth Doctor and Mel.

  • "The Fearmonger" - Seven and Ace go up against a shock jock - a story which makes creative use of the audio format.

  • "Master" - Seven solo, the first real glance at just how cold this version of the Doctor can be.

I'd prefer to start with the Fourth Doctor

Tom Baker was the fifth of the Doctors to agree to work with Big Finish, so has quite a large back catalogue. Tom is in a bit of a strange position. If you just want to sample him, try "The Wrath of the Iceni" (Fourth Doctor Adventures, available for free on music services). But I wouldn't recommend starting out with Tom, his releases just don't lend themselves to that.

I'd prefer to start with a New Who Doctor

I'll be real with you - at the time of writing, there is a lot of Classic Who Big Finish and relatively little New Who Big Finish, although there's constantly more of the latter. You'll run out of New Who stuff fairly quickly. The appeal is very much mostly in Classic stuff.

That said, I'd recommend starting with the following:

  • Ninth Doctor - Travel In Hope. This is a set of three stories where two of them are very good. The main attraction in the set is "Below There", but "Run" is probably the best "second best" story in a set in the Ninth Doctor range so far.

  • Tenth Doctor - Tenth Doctor and River Song. Much better than the initial numbered sets of the Tenth Doctor Adventures, and less of a commitment than Dalek Universe (which is very much aimed at Classic Who fans).

  • Eleventh Doctor - Geronimo!. This is the start of a run of stories set between Series 7A and 7B with a new companion, Valarie. It uses an excellent impersonator rather than Matt Smith, but don't let that put you off.

I'd prefer to start with the Third Doctor

Buy a set of the Third Doctor Adventures. If you want Jo, I'd suggest Vol 4. If you want Liz or Sarah Jane, try Vol 7, which has one story for each of them.

I want to start with the First or Second Doctors.

No you don't.

These Doctors will get guides of their own one day, but if you're new then right now the thing to do is to start with any other Doctor. These two are complicated because they've only fairly recently got their own dedicated ranges (especially Two), so their stories are spread across Short Trips, Companion Chronicles, and then the Early Adventures. Not to say that there isn't stuff you can enjoy, but it's a bit harder to "jump in".

I want to start with a spin-off.

Look for a different guide.

Conclusion

Hopefully this has helped you decide where to start with Doctor Who at Big Finish. Start with a free story, and ideally try to use one that will catapult you onto future stories.

I was listening to The Hallamshire Incident and I got the scene to where Yaz and her sister were talking

It was revealed that Jack Robertson was laughed by the general public when he claimed he saved the earth from the daleks as they believed he was covering his involvement in the dalek drone Incident as a result his career tanked and basically hid

And the scene when Yaz sister leaks the alien footage online it seems fo imply its the reason why the government refunded UNIT operations

I love big finish but there are certain ideas I wish they had followed up on.

. Unbound Richard Griffiths 8th Doctor series

. David Collings Full Fathom Five Doctor continuation series

Sadly with the passing of Richard Griffiths in 2013 and the passing of David Collings in 2020 these series are no longer possible.
However a boy can dream and these are just some ideas I wish Big Finish had taken advantage of while some of these actors were still alive.

Discussion The Lost Stories: Divergent Universe

Following on from a similar post made earlier today about the kind of stories a user wanted to see from Big Finish, I was curious if anyone else would be interested in seeing the Divergent Universe arc as originally planned as part of a Lost Stories range.

For those who don't know, the original 8th Doctor Main Range run, which saw him trapped in a timeless "Divergent" universe, was cut short after it was announced that Doctor Who would be returning to screens. That led to a planned multi episode arc being cut short and tidied up in a single rushed conclusion.

I've always been curious to know how it would have panned out if they continued as planned, and would be genuinely interested in a Lost Stories series which gave us a chance to see the original vision.

What are your thoughts on this? Any other Divergent universe fans out there who would want to see this?

Discussion Why Doesn’t Big Finish Give us This?!

Rhetorical question, as I have several suggestions, and I suspect some can’t be done because of copyright. Others have no excuse.

6 and Charley new Box sets.

One of my favorite companionship from the audios. 6 traveling with a companion from his future. Not only that they worked so well together. Ended far too soon. So new box sets with these two would be a blast.

13 multiple Doctor story.

And in keeping with the previous suggestion, and since we’ve already alluded to it when 13 met Menzies, 13 and companion mets 6 and Charley. Bonus points if it raises more questions than it answers. 🤣

Return of the comic strip adaptations.

Definitely more 4 and Sharon, but also 6 and Frobisher. Age of Chaos would be a fun adaptation!

Beyond comic strips.

Speaking of, original stories with 4 and Sharon, as well as 6 and Frobisher would be fantastic!

The half dozen Peris.

There are at least 6 different versions of Peri wandering around out there. 6 having to deal with all of them at once would be fun.

2nd Doctor stories set in the series.

Love the 2nd Doctor audios, but I also would like more stories like Operation Werewolf set in the original tv series.

Return to Nest Cottage

Home to 4, Mrs Wibbsey and former Captain Mike Yates. A new story or two there would be fun. Could even include later Doctors!

News Big Finish Podcast Notes / Misc. Doctor Who News Roundup - 16/10/2026

Introduction

Hello all and welcome back to the Big Finish Podcast Notes! Hope you've all had a lovely week.

I'm finally catching up with Circuit Breaker, and I've got to say that The Kaleidoscope is easily the highlight. The depth and history it's adding to the Fugitive Doctor is singlehandedly moving her up in my rankings.

Podcast

Podcast Notes

  • Nothing of note this week.

Random Tangents: Benji an others took Nick Briggs to Aldbourne (the filming location for The Dæmons) for his birthday. The locals very much embrace the Doctor Who connection, and their bins are shaped like TARDISes and Daleks. The local pub asked Nick to record a video in front of a Dalek bin for their social media.

Production Interviews: The Third Doctor Adventures: The Planet Killers by Jez Fielder (they actually put a spoiler warning before this one)

Fifteen Minute Drama Tease: The Audio Novels: The Missing Hour by Simon Guerrier and Fio Trethewey

Randomoid Selectotron: 25% off a random Big Finish release every week! Just click on this link and enter the code BUCKUP. There are currently technical issues with the Randomoid Selectotron, so it will be stuck on the last release from the 26 June podcast for the foreseeable future. This release is The Companion Chronicles: 7.6 The Child.

Discussion What are your thoughts on Charlotte Pollard’s spin off dying an un mourned death? Spoiler

Post image
43 Upvotes

Honestly it deserved better the set up was all there. Her post doctor life and her ultimate fate as the Viyrans silver surfer which was a fascinating premise for me (the Viyrans need more stories in general) series 1 was okay not terrible it established the arc would be about Charley’s escape from her life of servitude collecting viruses for her alien masters. And it gave Charley two companions Robert a plucky trust fund kid who is running away from daddy and Bertram the rogue Viyran who’s mystery is yet to be solved. but series 2 quickly lost me it hits the breaks almost instantly by changing gears from a space opera to a modern day X-files set up which doesn’t fit the tone of series 1 in my opinion. What are your thoughts?

Personally, I'm glad these ranges are getting CD releases but as someone who is a pretty avid collector but will buy digital only when no CD is available, I'm pretty annoyed that I now have to pay full price again if I want these releases (even if they do include additional material)

Discussion decades behind, but LUVVIN Dark Eyes (1)!

it's a man-of-many-voices-fest for writer, producer, director Nicholas Briggs, but my goodness Dark Eyes, being Big Finish's kind of unique in-house Doctor Who adventures, is a rollicking romp: great character & performance in Molly O'Sullivan / Ruth Madely, Time Lords & Daleks & tricksters abound, great music & noises scintillate the soundtrack, & Paul McGann in his element.
I don't care i'm 13 years behind. better late than never.
bravo Nick Briggs et al. bravo!!!

What do we think the chances are that the second Halloween box set dispatches before Halloween?

I had it on pre-order and I'm surprised the Ninth Doctor audio False Friends dispatched before it. I hope it is sent in time for Halloween as I'd rather listen to the physical CD rather than the download that comes with it.

Discussion Big Finish Diary - Web App

Thumbnail
gallery
22 Upvotes

Hello dear Big Finish listeners !

I'm a french fan slowly getting into bigfinish for around a few year now.
And I'd like to share a project, kind of a web log platform for Big Finish audios.
Pardon the URL "https://carnetbf-6fwkv.b-cdn.net/", I didn't paid for a hostname at the moment, but I'm already using a true (paid) CDN so It should be quite strong to support the data.

As a developer & artist, I tried to do my best, and I'm welcoming any feedbacks !

At first I had a google doc to write down what I thought about my listenings, because I forget quickly. And kinda give notes to share them with fellow fans and brought them into the audio world.
But the whole concept of copy pasting the cover, adding a link, keeping it organized felt a bit tiring.
And the idea to do some kind of web app for myself kept coming back to my mind a year ago. And a year later, voila
But being a bit perfectionist, I started to think that maybe some other users might like to use it, so I ended up doing a basic account system with it.
There sure is alternatives and I'm not trying to compete with them especially. I'm just focusing on what *I* would want for a platform. And I know this kind of reasoning sometimes work because you end up finding users that want exactly the same.. Again, I'm all fine of it keeping it just as an exercise after all.

The principe is simple, you enter the url of a big finish audio, & it's added to the database, you can then choose a status (to listen, being listened (useful if you have multiple) or listened).
Then you can write down your review for yourself, or share it easily with anybody. Your diary is public by default, but you can also keep it private through your settings.

Langage wise, the website is available in french and english at the moment.
edit: I auto-translated the UI to German.

I'm also testing an additional feature to the notation system which is 'very inegal quality', which might help a bit, because 'notes' can be very frustrating.

That's all, thanks for reading !
