Question/Discussion SNL UK perfectly represents the ridiculous class and economic bias in British comedy.

3.0k Upvotes

Obviously, this is the fault of the producers and not the individuals, but the level of class and economic bias in British comedy is none so clear as in SNL UK.

The main cast of twelve includes seven who were privately educated. Of those seven, four went to Cambridge (three of whom were in Footlights), one went to King's College, and one has a master's from the Royal Central College Of Speech And Drama. While the non-private school kids include another King's graduate, and one who trained at RADA.

The writers' room somehow tops that with Footlights members, old Etonians (including a former roomate of Prince William), and people related to and married into minor nobility.

Plenty of comedy trios and double acts were formed by young comedians meeting at prestigious universities but this is a show with a large cast and creative team assembled by a production company that contains a staggeringly disproportionate amount of wealth and privilege. And frankly, it's the current state of the industry in a nutshell.

The arts are now pay to play, and the days of Pontins Bluecoats like Lee Mack or gifted working class writers like John Syllivan breaking their way into the industry are long gone. And losing them means losing their perspective.

Question/Discussion This clip from BBC Breakfast lives rent free in my head

"I don't like ice cream, Hannah" – Naga Munchetty

Did anyone see this live? The segment/story about ice cream itself is innocuous, but Munchetty's response seems so cringe, and with Stayt's reaction it almost feels like an outtake/parody even in the world of breakfast television. The outrageousness is probably why this clip still lingers in my consciousness.

What do you guys think?

Just watched this on Netflix and damn we are so cooked. I'm genuinely in disbelief at the utter, blatant sexism and misogyny of it all. The insane rhetoric some of these men are spewing should be illegal.

Have you seen it?

Question/Discussion TV Crush

When I was a kid, I genuinely thought she was the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen. Something about her whole presence in Dempsey and Makepeace just lodged itself in my young brain and stayed there.

Who was your TV crush and why?

Question/Discussion Has there ever been a sadder or more impactful ending to a tv series than "Blackadder Goes Forth"?

Post image

As most of the cast goes over the top of their trench to the German machine guns and explosions. As the theme tune plays on a slow, sad piano. Only for the video to transition to an empty battle field with drums being the only sound and then to a present-day field of poppies.

Question/Discussion Why does Stephen Bartlett make my skin crawl?

1.9k Upvotes

Seeing him on Dragons Den sitting there all smug and more often than not turning people down for stupid reasons really annoys me.

I've no idea why he's even there? He's sitting amongst proven, mature business people who have a whole range of experience, yet all his thing is 'i can do tik tok!'

Is it just me?

PS not seen/heard his podcast not sure I want to

Question/Discussion Is Jimmy Carr really rubbing anyone else the wrong way lately?

2.2k Upvotes

I was never a mega fan or anything but he was always a decently funny host on 8 out of 10 cats and big fat quiz and whatnot but lately I keep seeing clips and stuff where it's like he's taken it upon himself to be this "deep thinker" and talking about masculinity and philosiphy or whatever the fuck in a way that's really grating. Like you can hear the smugness in his voice and how intelligent he thinks he his. The last clip I saw was one of his stand up gigs and one of the "crowd" (I think all the audience interactions in his shows are pre-written) asked him what he thought of the Louis Theroux manosphere documentary and he went off on this (again clearly pre-written and rehearsed) speech about how "*its good that there are people talking to young men but it should be better men that are doing it*" without a hint of any kind of joke and then he got a big round of applause and just looked smug as fuck like "*yeah im such a clever, insightful bloke*". At a bloody stand up comedy gig

I'm just finding this sudden shift in his persona (and his face and hair lol) really off-putting and fake. Anyone else?

Binge watching Ann Droid today and I really love every part of this show that doesn't include these two. They've got to be the most unlikeable couple I've ever seen on TV.

Question/Discussion Do you know anyone who appeared on a BBC3 reality shows?

Post image

Does anybody here know someone who took part as a contestant on one of those BBC3 reality shows back in the day? Or better yet, did anybody here actually take part in one?

I'd love to know how they feel looking back?

If my memory serves me correctly, they always cast 18/19 year olds, and the entire premise of all these shows was usually "haha look how dumb they are!"

I wonder how many of them regret it, or if they just look back on it as just a laugh.

It's also interesting that these shows never seemed to produce any Z-List celebrities came from these shows the way they do on Love Island, Traitors, Big Brother etc either. Unless I'm forgetting somebody obvious, it seems all of them just completely disappeared afterwards.

Question/Discussion Is this one of the funniest post-2000 scenes in British TV?

3.0k Upvotes

This has to be up there with DelBoy falling through the bar and The Two Ronnies ‘Four Candles’…

This Country is a great show anyway, but this scene is completely irrelevant, but at the same time, completely needed.

What else is up there?

Question/Discussion Having a bizarre experience with David Tennant

My eight year old has discovered Doctor Who and is excitedly making his way through the series. Our routine includes one episode every day before bed and we're currently on series 3. Don't tell any Who fans this but I find Tennant's wild overacting excruciating a lot of the time, but it is great for kids.

Thing is, my wife and I are also now making our way through the (BRILLIANT) second series of Rivals on Disney+. His performance is snarling, sinister, and magnetic. He's gotten so much better as an actor even over the last few years.

Obviously I understand that actors play different roles, but every day I go from wholesome high-energy adventurer to megalomaniac philandering bastard and then back to gurning zany manchild again with the same face and it's making my head spin.

You can just go down the list all day long and name excellent British police / crime dramas. If there's anything Brits do well it's this.

What's your personal favourite? For me you can never go wrong with Line Of Duty.
