ND possibly booted from playoff contention by week 3

677

u/Chicago_Blackhawks Northwestern Wildcats • Sickos Sep 14 '25

And one of those weeks was a bye for them lol

They put the bye in bye week

How you get fired on your day off?

Have to win out and that might not even do it

261

u/Benson879 Iowa State Cyclones Sep 14 '25

There’s no quality win left in their schedule besides maybe USC? One of those times where their lack of conference does them in.

42

u/Jeffmister Cheer Sep 14 '25

Yep - their first two games were meant to be the platform to set up the rest of the season but they threw away dropped that opportunity.

37

u/Benson879 Iowa State Cyclones Sep 14 '25

I’m just hoping one more loss gets dropped in somewhere so it’s not even a debate. Lol

-14

u/ozymandais13 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Sep 14 '25

Why , we don't even play you guys

2

u/Benson879 Iowa State Cyclones Sep 14 '25

Any hope of the Big 12 getting a second bid relies on ND being out of the picture. Definitely has meaning.

18

u/MinnyRawks North Dakota State • Minne… Sep 14 '25

They’d be worse off with a conference schedule tbf

21

u/ozymandais13 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Sep 14 '25

If Michigan was OK with Catholics we'd have been in the big 10 since the like 30s or some shit

7

u/MinnyRawks North Dakota State • Minne… Sep 14 '25

Should’ve recruited convicts and joined the ACC like the rest of their sports

u/flaminhotcheeto Western Michigan • Michigan S… Sep 14 '25

I have a basketball from my childhood that is a (now B1G) BIG10 conference ball that has all the teams. I'm positive that Notre Dame is on it from my memory. What happened? I swear they were Big 10 at some point

7

u/MinnyRawks North Dakota State • Minne… Sep 14 '25

I’m not a basketball guy but I think they were Big East before ACC.

They are B1G in hockey currently tho and given the Western Michigan flair maybe that’s where it’s coming from?

1

u/flaminhotcheeto Western Michigan • Michigan S… Sep 14 '25

I think it's just a Mandela Effect / false memory

I think this is the ball but i could swear the logos were smaller.

7

u/wysiwygperson Notre Dame Fighting Irish Sep 14 '25

We literally have to pray that Miami and A&M and playoff teams and that USC is actually good enough to be ranked.

And even then, we probably need a lot of chaos so there aren't a bunch of one loss teams.

1

u/snickerDUDEls Notre Dame Fighting Irish Sep 14 '25

Miami looks legit so far. USC will show who they are their next 3 games against MSU, Illini, and UM. Arkansas could be a problem. Realistically there are still 3 or 4 games that could be an issue for the Irish. I have turned my expectations all the way down

37

u/RulersBack Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 14 '25 edited Sep 14 '25

So much peacocking (pun) from them about having the perfect setup for the playoffs. They’re not exactly wrong but it would be hilarious if this ends up being the case

Win out and honestly pray for help. Absolutely don’t control their own destiny at this point.

11

u/Sam_Strake Texas A&M Aggies Sep 14 '25

Ah but you're forgetting the very important fact that they're Notre Dame™️

8

u/RiotsMade Texas A&M Aggies Sep 14 '25

No chance a 10-2 ND is left out of a 12 team playoff. None. If they win out, they’re in.

27

u/rmcg11 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Sep 14 '25

Win out with A&M and Miami both being playoff teams

11

u/JumboFister Texas A&M Aggies Sep 14 '25

You’re putting far too much trust in us lol we def losing 3-4 games

1

u/dyfish Hawai'i • Northern Arizona Sep 14 '25

I think you could get by with one of them being a playoff team but the other definitely needs to be ranked top 20.

3

u/Aggie9er TCU Horned Frogs Sep 14 '25

So A&M holds the fate of Notre Dame playoff chances thats tempting

2

u/dyfish Hawai'i • Northern Arizona Sep 14 '25

Legitimately yeah. Aggies lose like 4 games. ND has 0 chance.

2

u/Aggie9er TCU Horned Frogs Sep 14 '25

So a glass half full type of season

1

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '25

A&M and Miami both being playoff teams would hurt them. That locks up 2 at-large spots.

What they need (well, besides a new DC) is mass carnage. What A&M and Miami do from here on is irrelevant unless they both go like 3-9.

18

u/AlphaH4wk Texas A&M Aggies • /r/CFB Poll Veteran Sep 14 '25

It probably would have been good enough last year. They have a pretty soft schedule remaining so they can do it

5

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '25

the soft schedule is actually not a good thing for them in this situation though

7

u/CalTono Notre Dame Fighting Irish Sep 14 '25

No they'll let a 3 loss SEC team over us, and they should, this defense is extremely sorry

5

u/buxtonOJ Notre Dame Fighting Irish Sep 14 '25

4

It probably won't and I'm all for them missing the playoffs this year. They don't deserve it. Haven't played with the same intensity and they're just worse...so much worse than I thought they'd be.

13

u/titanup001 Tennessee Volunteers Sep 14 '25

They should just win their conference title game. Oh right. Fuck notre dame. lol

-16

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '25

Oh look it’s the stupidest take of all time.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '25

It really isnt. If you had a conference championship to play for your hopes of a playoff would be alive and well right now.

-2

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '25

Oh honey. 10-2 is in sorry

1

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '25

Lmao whatever you have to tell yourself to sleep tonight

-1

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '25

Tell me more about winning Nebraska

2

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '25

well we are 3-0 and youre 0-2.

Last time you won a national championship was 1988. You likely werent alive for that. Ive seen my team win 3 national championships in my lifetime, last one being in 1997.

Despite having better teams over the past couple decades, your team has accomplished nothing, and won nothing. Maybe if you werent independent youd have a conference championship to at least point to.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '25

My last title was 2017. Your team took that coach and tried to kill him with the failure of having to live in Nebraska.

u/CrumbBCrumb Pittsburgh Panthers Sep 14 '25

I'm kind of a ND hater so that might be clouding my judgment but the only way I see winning out getting them in is off the name alone. Their best two games remaining are probably Arkansas and USC. If USC isn't ranked when they play is that really enough of a signature win to get in?

3

u/AuGa_skittles USC Trojans • Saddleback Bobcats Sep 14 '25

Yea and we play Michigan and Illinois before them so in a weird way they’ll need to root for us to help them out.

It’s also ND though and I think the committee lets them in with 2 losses especially with how inconsistent the rest of the field is.

3

u/CrumbBCrumb Pittsburgh Panthers Sep 14 '25

Oh, if they go 10-2 I definitely expect them to get in because their name is Notre Dame but that'll probably miss of a lot of fans. They need you guys to basically go 10-2 or 11-1 and they probably needed Arkansas to win today. Or, someone like Navy, Cuse, or NC State to go on a run

1

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '25

The only ND fans I know are so quick to just stop watching and give up on their team if they think the natty is no longer winnable. Its kinda funny. If they had a conference championship to play for, it would be a whole different story right now.

1

u/Ml2jukes Michigan Wolverines • Rose Bowl Sep 14 '25

I don’t think they needed any help to root for y’all playing us.

1

u/thecarlosdanger1 Notre Dame • Cornell Sep 14 '25

We need at least one of Miami/A&M to be elite, someone else to be ranked when we play, and some B1G/SEC chaos. Otherwise we are out at 10-2

4

u/AdventureDude24 Notre Dame • UIndy Sep 14 '25

They dont deserve to. I want this team unranked and written off from the ESPN manuscript

9

u/BadDadJokes LSU Tigers • Chattanooga Mocs Sep 14 '25

It’s Notre Dame, they’ll be in the mix is they win out.

26

u/RulersBack Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 14 '25 edited Sep 14 '25

They have zero currently ranked teams left on the schedule. They’ll need to look absolutely dominant and benefit from a fair amount of chaos

9

u/Leet_Noob Sep 14 '25

They probably need one of their remaining opponents to get hot and become ranked

8

u/BuckeyeForLife95 Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 14 '25

Not only do they have no currently ranked opponents, I don’t even know who could rise up and become one. USC? Pitt? Boise? It’s a dire situation for Notre Dame. For once, their schedule matches the stereotypes.

2

u/Mattp55 Penn State Nittany Lions • Florida Gators Sep 14 '25

USC could be solid for sure. I dont see it being anyone else. Maybe they steamroll teams and get in like that

2

u/thecarlosdanger1 Notre Dame • Cornell Sep 14 '25

USC, Pitt, or Honestly Navy. It’s ironic because I was worried having the hardest 2 games first would be an issue with a new QB, but Carr has been one of the best parts of the team.

Defense on the other hand…

1

u/lkn240 Illinois Fighting Illini • Sickos Sep 14 '25

USC I think is the main hope. They do look frisky so far

1

u/BuckeyeForLife95 Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 14 '25

The problem for USC is that USC probably goes into the Notre Dame game losing two straight, and feels like they have an 8-4/9-3 ceiling. They could easily wind up in "additional receiving votes" range at the end of the year.

5

u/BadDadJokes LSU Tigers • Chattanooga Mocs Sep 14 '25

Counter point: they’re Notre Dame.

8

u/RulersBack Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 14 '25 edited Sep 14 '25

The committee could’ve easily twisted themselves into some justification to put Bama and Miami (Cam Ward eyeballs) in last year. I think they’ve earned the benefit of the doubt that you need a deserving resume to get in

8

u/Volleyball45 Penn State • Appalachian State Sep 14 '25

Would they deserve it? As of right now they don’t play a single ranked team for the rest of the season.

7

u/theboarderdude Missouri Tigers • Missouri S&T Miners Sep 14 '25

No but they’ll fall to ~18 after this and if they win out they’ll 100% be back in the top 12

3

u/USMNT_ Notre Dame • Boise State Sep 14 '25

I’m pretty sure they’re gonna be unranked. Two close losses to playoff ish teams but still 0-2

u/jedi_mac_n_cheese Oregon Ducks Sep 14 '25

Playoff via poll inertia

1

u/Volleyball45 Penn State • Appalachian State Sep 14 '25

First confirmed case of dead cat bounce in CFB? How exciting.

1

u/thecarlosdanger1 Notre Dame • Cornell Sep 14 '25

Only if Miami/A&M are really good, one of their remaining opponents is ranked, and there’s chaos in the Big 2 conferences.

We absolutely don’t control our destiny now.

1

u/Volleyball45 Penn State • Appalachian State Sep 14 '25

It’s true, we really have no idea how good Miami or A&M are. TAMU will have their fair share of tests but Miami just has FSU on their schedule and not a ton else.

1

u/thecarlosdanger1 Notre Dame • Cornell Sep 14 '25

I feel more confident that Miami is good. They have some elite OL and DL players and Beck is very good when clean.

ND did almost nothing to make Reed uncomfortable as much as I like Elko as a coach.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '25

That would completely depend on what else happens throughout the CFB landscape.

3

u/cheerl231 Michigan Wolverines Sep 14 '25

Theyll have the benefit of poll inertia if they win out. Also admittedly their two losses were close games.

Id guess they're in if they win out but it depends on the rest of the field.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '25

but imagine if Texas A&M falls to 9-3, and Miami ends up not winning the conference and missing the playoff.

It all depends what would happen with the rest of CFB. Basically, even if they win out their fate would be out of their hands. They would need some things to align, and then its possible.

1

u/americansherlock201 Miami Hurricanes Sep 14 '25

I don’t even think they would at that point. Zero quality games left on their schedule. Multiple losses to ranked opponents.

It’s wild to say but NDs season is effectively over by sept 14 lol

-1

u/mbrogan4 Notre Dame • Illinois State Sep 14 '25

If we got 10-2 we will make the playoffs. But I’d be shocked if this team doesn’t stumble on some pebble team. 9-3 and a “solid” bowl game win is the zenith we have this season.

Yes good teams miss extra points. Sometimes good teams lose 2 in a row to ranked teams. Just gotta be 12 in December.

0

I think at this point we'd need no undefeated teams in the top 25, multiple 2 and 3 losses up there, and to win out. None of that is happening, so it's "try to make a bowl" as the goal.

I think if they convincingly beat everyone they have left & both Miami and A&M make it (if they're also bubble teams they'll have head-to-head argument over Irish) they'll make the argument that they shouldn't be punished for scheduling tough teams, especially since both of these came down to the wire.

Absolutely hilarious that all I heard from ND fans was that independence essentially means that they are guaranteed a playoff spot for the foreseeable future… Those comments have aged like milk

The only arguement left is that the losses were beginning of the season.

Serious question: if they played and soundly beat two FCS teams instead of losing last second to Miami and Texas A&M, would they still be considered favorites to make the playoffs? I think the answer is yes and I think schools will consider the SEC model of scheduling nobodies more seriously going forward. Notre Dame is going to get screwed out of the playoff the same way South Carolina was last year, and P4 teams will start scheduling only cupcakes for their non conference because so many people think standings should match rankings.

They need help idk if their schedule is good enough to make it at 10-2. They basically need usc to be good

I agree with you and they will be competing with the fourth best big ten and sec team for that playoff spot

They need a lot of help and the only potentially good team they play is usc

Look at their schedule, definitely booted. They may not beat a single ranked team.

As horny as the CFP committee is for Notre Dame, they may need to go 6-6 to be out of contention

But somehow ranked #6 after voters watch future #8 Georgia barely beat Tennessee. A 1 point loss is functionally a tie.
