I don’t think it’s that, I think it’s that we still don’t know what the committee values. It appears that non conference games don’t matter so don’t schedule them.
Exactly. I mean we have 5 games against top 5 teams, won 3 easily, and only the Georgia game was a bad loss. Ohio State barely beat us. Florida loss obviously fucking us but our wins are pretty fkn great
No way an Oregon flair is talking about academics to a Michigan flair lmao
The Michigan flair still hasn't explained why they ignored the disparity in total losses.
They asked why Alabama was in over Texas and I explained it, even though it is perfectly obvious even in an academic pisshole like Oregon. Using basic math I'll explain it to you. If you have more losses, you are going to be ranked lower.
3 is greater than 2.
Is that clear enough for you folks at your various public Ivy's?
Yeah, and I think punishing a loss to Florida is a defensible decision on the committee’s part.
The problem is, though, that Texas would have been better off with an easier schedule. If they don’t schedule OSU, they’re likely in with 2 losses, even with a bad loss to Florida. Same goes for Michigan scheduling Oklahoma. If they don’t want to incentivize teams against playing games like that, they need to change their criteria, even if those criteria are otherwise defensible.
No thats what makes it an argument because if we scheduled Samford and won 10-2 with wins over Vandy OU and A&M would have texas easily in the playoffs. I think we should be out unless some chaos happens tomorrow but
there is a vaild argument.
There’s a valid argument, but you’d still be on the bubble. Miami isn’t going to get the head to head against Notre Dame. I think the convo would be Oklahoma vs Texas for last spot with you guys maybe edging them out bc of the win today
If Miami can’t be ranked over ND despite the headed to head, if bama can’t be ranked over ND despite the strength of record and strength of schedule, then Texas has no shot. I hate it but that’s was the committee sees this year.
SEC should consider not going to 9 conference games and all SEC teams should consider scheduling cupcakes for all non-conference games if the committee values record and “what have you done for me recently” only
They were top 10 when the Longhorns played them. Say what you want but they were top 10. If you beat a top 10 team you have a top 10 win, the logic applies to all. Even now Vanderbilt is what 12th? It's not like they took a complete nose dive after the Longhorns beat them. Vanderbilt is a solid win no matter what angle you take it from.
Vanderbilt hasn't lost a game since the Longhorns beat them right? I'd say that would make it that the reason that Vanderbilt isn't in the top 10 is because of the Longhorns. How are you going to give a team less credit for a win because that team is lower in the rankings as a direct result of them beating them?
I get where you're coming from, but I'm just using the established principles of comparing resumes. Teams always move down when they lose so this happens all the time.
Besides, Vandy is still a valuable win, just not top 10 is all
Vanderbilt is an okay win. Oklahoma is a good one. They also got blown out by Georgia, lost to Florida, and played Kentucky pretty close. To me it’d be like a Miami vs Notre Dame conversation between Oklahoma and Texas. Because BYU is in if they win out and even if they lose that’d be a tough comparison
Texas beat Oklahoma H2H my guy. They are also the only team with 2 top 8 wins. BYU’s best win is Utah who is one spot ahead of Vandy and only an “Okay” win. If BYU has 2 losses they wouldn’t even be in the conversation I have no idea what you are even talking about. They wouldn’t even have a top 10 win like what?
Vanderbilt lost the only 2 real games they played all year. I don’t think anyone would give us credit for a “top 10 win” against Illinois. Miami has H2H against ND and they’re gonna get left out. What if BYU wins the rematch? What if Michigan wins and makes the Big 10 championship? Plenty of scenarios where they’re still left out. It’s still a bubble convo because at the end of the day they lost to Florida, got blown out by Georgia, and struggled to handle business in multiple games
I’m not giving Texas credit for a top 10 win against Vandy. They beat A&M and Oklahoma who are both in the top 8 my guy. Miami is going to get left out because their resume sucks. If BYU wins the Big 12 they are obv the AQ. Even in chaos scenarios you are preposing, Texas has a better resume than all the teams you are mentioning Alabama, Oklahoma, ND they would be safely in. The Georgia game wasn’t even a blowout if you actually watched it. They scored 3 TDs in the 4th quarter after Texas cut it to 4. Alabama lost to Florida St. Oklahoma has struggled offensively since Mateer has been back, Oregon should have lost to Iowa and went to OT with a below .500 Penn St team. In fact Oregon only has 1 top 25 win they have a terrible resume. You are not critically looking at things at all.
I did watch the Georgia game and I really didn’t think it was all that close. I’ve watched Oklahoma get better since Mateer’s injury has healed. You can argue they’d win the rematch. Texas has been inconsistent all year. Call me a hater but their resume doesn’t really impress me. A&M needed a miracle to beat South Carolina they aren’t exactly finishing the season strong. Even without OSU a 10-2 team that needed OT to beat 2 really bad teams and lost to Florida isn’t deserving of a playoff spot. 12 is too much anyways. The playoff should have always been 8
If they want controversy and viewers Texas is in the playoffs. Otherwise I am happy for the season because we beat our rivals and our young o line will get better next year.
You need a LOT of chaos. If Bama or OU loses (and OSU wins) it’s MILDLY interesting. If OU AND Bama lose it’s maybe actually sort of interesting. Still don’t see you hopping Miami.
Keep in mind, in the eyes of the committee, Miami did not beat Notre Dame. They may as well have not played. We can just assume Miami opened the season by beating Northern Delaware. With this in mind, the argument becomes more coherent
Miami has to beat Pitt who is trying to save their season after getting slapped around by ND. It’s highly unlikely Texas makes the playoffs but it’s not hard to see it happening either.
Michigan’s issue wouldn’t be about
Texas, it would be about displacing somebody in front of them like Bama. If OU, Bama, ND, and Michigan all win I think k it genuinely puts the committee in something of a bind.
no way they deserve to hop us objectively. surface level they have more losses and lost to our common opponent (that we killed mind you). Knowing the committee and where the money is they will tho. even (assuming we we win tomorrow which is no guarantee) tho we add another ranked win
It’s weird, because I don’t think a 3 loss team should be in, but I DO think those good wins outweigh the 1 really bad loss. Texas had a fluke game against Florida and is one of the top 12 teams.
I feel like this glosses over the middle of the season where they had 3-4 matches they escaped. They could easily be a few plays away from 6-6 as well.
Our OL was retooled about 8 games into the season. The starting center got hurt and the backup had to start, played decent enough, so when the starter was available again they just played him at LG and we haven't been a total turnstile at that spot since. It's still not good, but that spot isn't abhorrent like it was.
We also lost to Florida by one score and ohio state by one score so we could easily flip literally two plays and be 11-1 with the only loss being UGA. It works both ways. Wins just matter less.
You are right. I guess I didn’t really pay attention at the time, but needing OT to beat both Kentucky and Miss State in back to back weeks (who are combined 3-13 in SEC play) is hard to overlook.
Notre Dame lost to Texas A&M at home who just lost by 10 to Texas. Their only quality win is three-loss USC.
Texas has three top-15 wins (Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt). The reason to put Notre Dame above Texas is they have one fewer loss. It’s going to be an interesting conversation for the last spot if Ohio State finally can beat Michigan.
If Pitt wins tomorrow, I’ll change my stance about them. Georgia Tech doesn’t have a ranked win all year. They essentially were a better version of Missouri in the SEC who stayed ranked by beating who they should and losing to every ranked team they faced.
You don’t get punished, but you dint get rewarded for it either. And when a cause for punishment comes in the form of a L, they absolutely factor it in then when deciding rerank a team.
The Georgia game was 14-10 going into the fourth quarter. Texas absolutely sucked in the fourth, with Kirby Smart’s onside kick being the nail in the coffin. Texas certainly didn’t play well against Kentucky or Mississippi State, but they won.
Also. Notre Dame struggled with 1-10 Boston College, too. It goes both ways.
Also, I will not be surprised if Texas is left out, and I’m fine with that. That said, Sarkisian does have a point about the Ohio State game. If Texas schedules a gimme in week 1 and wins, even with the loss to 3-8 Florida they would be a playoff lock at 10-2 with three top-15 wins.
Other than beating Oklahoma and being very competitive in Columbus against Ohio State, Texas did not look good until the November 1st game against Vanderbilt, I agree.
Notre Dame lost its first two games of the year and represents Miami’s only ranked win of the season. You sucked ass to start the season, too.
Compare the resumes and objectively tell me Notre Dame’s resume is better than Texas. If I believed Notre Dame had the better resume, I’d say so. They don’t.
Two games we won? People keep bringing up Kentucky like they didn't do the same damn thing to Georgia LAST YEAR.
Mississippi State also took other good teams down to the wire. I don't really see how a 17 point comeback in a hostile environment is some sort of gotcha.
Notre Dame looked like a better team in October, minus Texas beating top-10 Oklahoma. In November, both teams have looked good overall. Texas dominated Arkansas last week, beat Vanderbilt at home and A&M tonight with a dominant second half.
Outside of a poor 4th quarter in Athens, Texas and Arch Manning have played well this month.
You just can't justify putting a 3 loss team that lost to a 3/4 win team in the CFP (yes I know we did not score an offensive touchdown against that team but that does not negate my point)
The radio guy said this is the first time a team had three top 10 wins in six years. I was a little surprised by that info. I doubt Texas will get in but the chaos on this sub if they would be magical.
Counterpoint: Counting top-10 wins on weeks that are not the current week are dumb. If you did that, Charlie Strong would have a top 10 win in 2016, even though that win was against a Notre Dame that went 4-8.
I agree with you, but those teams are all top 15 now anyway. OU and A&M are still top 10. Vandy literally would be top 10 if they had beaten us. Our fault for beating them lol.
None of them went anything close to the 4-8 Charlie Strong example.
I definitely see a valid argument for both mindsets. I don't really pay much attention to stats like that but I do recognize that the energy going against a top 10 team is very different than going against an unranked team. Hindsight is always 20-20 but I'm very confident players treat those two examples differently, even if coaches say they don't.
Texas IMO basically has to get in the top 10 in order to go to the playoffs. 12 seed will be the AAC champion and the 11 seed will almost certainly be the ACC champion unless Miami makes the ACCCG and wins which is unlikely. Unless major chaos happens tomorrow they probably don’t make it.
Unless the committee throws them in for controversy and money; I wouldn’t put it past them to do that.
Close loss to #1 OSU and likely #3 UGA. Plus wins over TAMU and Oklahoma. I can already hear the committee "we think that Texas is playing better down the stretch and Arch has developed so much since that loss to Florida. If they were to play again tomorrow, we feel that Texas would win convincingly. As such we really consider Texas to be in the same tier as the 10-2 schools and really deserving of the 12 seed."
The issue is that people are only looking at their good wins and losses. Needing overtime to beat Mississippi State and Kentucky is a bad look when all the other top SEC teams had absolutely no trouble with them.
I think 12 is a silly number because byes are a silly concept.
Not to mention 5 spots to conference champs. Texas may or may not be one of the 12 best teams in the nation, but they're certainly better than the 5th best conference champion.
Think it’s actually showing why 12 teams is too many. Ludicrous that we’re debating whether a 9-3 team deserves to be in the playoff. 4 was always the proper #
I think we are going to have more of this. Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, etc winning the title in a “down” year because they are the only teams with the depth to win 4 tough games jn a row
I think it should be 69 teams and every team plays 1 quarter against every other team over one hellish week where they play all throughout the day and night. Then after that the top 10 teams' quarterbacks do a foot race to decide the final winner.
Well it should be enough, but currently the debate is whether a 2-3 loss SEC team should get in over a 1 loss BYU so that’s kinda why it’s controversial.
I’ll bite - ask yourself honestly: if Texas played Prairie View A&M week 1 instead and finished 10-2 with 3 top 10 wins, would they not be 100% in this playoff?
Now back to my original point - none of Texas, Miami, ND, BYU, or Ole Miss should be playing for the national championship anyway
Also yea your original point is correct. The college football playoff is to determine the best TEAM in college football. Not to give the best teams another chance. The best team in college football is not one with 3 losses. If you were one of the best teams and deserving of a national title you would have a spot in any CFP.
No we need more to expose the SEC. SEC was dominant when they had the teams most likely to get you NFL exposure. Now that players are payed, the talent is spreading out. The world needs to see the SEC lose to other conferences.
Not just this game. Utah and Texas won today. If the other teams in the 11-16 range (BYU, Miami, Vandy, and Michigan) all win tomorrow, then multiple teams are getting left out and will be pissed.
If anything 12 is too many imo. I firmly believe that there are only like 6-8 teams in any given year that are legitimately capable of winning the national championship. If the bracket were 8 teams like it should be, we aren't even having this conversation.

People are going to use to this game as an example for why 12 teams isn’t enough, aren’t they?
