Texas ended #3 A&M’s chances of an unbeaten season, shut down then #6 OU, and also beat then #9 Vanderbilt. They lost by 7 at top-ranked Ohio State in a game where they outgained the Buckeyes by 200 yards.
And yet, they’re likely going to miss the playoffs because they couldn’t beat a Florida team that might finish with a 3-9 record this year.
We did in the 4 team era by scheduling Alabama and beating them. In the 12 team era, I agree though, scheduling weak is the way to go if you want to increase your chances of making the playoffs. That being said it’s more fun to schedule good teams so I hope we keep on doing that
That was the 4 team era. When the field was that small, you actually needed quality wins to get in because there was likely going to be 3 or 4 teams right there on the edge. In the 12 team era, you literally just need to be a 2 loss SEC/B1G team or a 1 loss Big 12/ACC team. Strength of schedule is irrelevant outside of seeding.
Or don’t get blown out by Georgia and lose to a mediocre Florida. They’ve lost three games this season, and the one they’re bitching about isn’t the one keeping them out of the playoffs.
The OSU and Florida losses count equally on paper. But if the committee weighs the OSU and Florida losses evenly, there will be zero incentive for teams to schedule tough non-conference games. That is bad for the sport
We know that the committee doesn’t weigh losses equally.
Case in point is Miami - Notre Dame, if losses were equal, Miami has the H2H, they’d be above ND. They aren’t, because ND lost to good teams, Miami lost to mediocre ones.
I think it's also ND losing to Miami and A&M the first two weeks with a brand new QB by a combined 4 points thanks to an atrocious kicking game, and then curb stomping a lot of teams they've played since.
It is keeping them out of the playoffs tho. I dont see why y’all don’t get this . The florida loss is BAD but it’s just 1 loss. 10-2 Texas with losses to florida and uga and 4 ooc cupcakes is in the playoffs bc they have 3 top 10 wins in conference
Your argument only works because they lost. It assumes that a challenging OOC is bad because you lose and your rank goes down. Notre dame was a challenging OOC game for us and has been great for our rankings.
If you think Texas should be in the playoffs, then you think they are the best team in the country. Play the best, you’ll win most of the time.
You still would’ve controlled your own destiny though. Beat Texas and you would’ve jumped back ahead of them. Even in the actual scenario, that ND win is going to be worth 2 or 3 spots in the seeding at most over playing UTEP.
An 11-1 SEC team is never playing on the road in the first round. I don’t care who the wins or losses are to. The ND game is going to be worth a couple of seeds at max, but not really change anything.
No believe it or not an 11-1 SEC team is in the playoffs no matter what. If u dont belive me texas made the playoffs last year with 1 win against a team in the cfp top 25 cause we were 11-1 before conference championship. Replace your Notre dame win with like midwestern state and ur still a lock
But our seed would be much worse. That’s the whole point. A good OOC is the difference between a first round bye or not, or a home game instead of an away game in the first round.
We won’t be three though. We will be 6ish. And that ND win will absolutely give us credit enough to give us a higher seed than if we played UTEP instead
Possibly. Will it keep you in front of Old Miss? It could maybe impact 1-2 slots but didn’t change whether you make the playoff and get a home game. You are easily in the 5-8 range with 1 loss either way.
If they had played a FCS school instead of Ohio State, they’d have been the #1 team until Week 5, dropped to around 8-10, then climbed back up to the top 5 until they lost to Georgia and be ranked about 10 right now, and be ranked like 5-8 after this week and a lock for a home playoff game.
And if you’d won against OSU, you’d be 5th, and would have a legitimate shot at getting a first round bye with 3 top 10 wins. Beating a hard OOC game is better than beating an easy one, and losing to a Hard OOC game is better than losing to an easy one.
If yall beat OSU, you’d have gone into this game at 5th.
Yall would likely have a first round bye with the only loss for two 11-0 teams + OU in the top 10, plus Vandy in the top 25.
If you played a cupcake, you’d be lucky to have first round at home, would probably be the highest ranked 2 loss team. While it might not be the best idea to schedule a top 4 program, it certainly makes sense to schedule a competitive one for your program, like a top 15 for Texas.
Nah man, I get the point. It’s actually easy. Win more games. You get one shitter loss a year. Two if they’re to good teams. We burned ours on y’all. Y’all burned burned yours to OSU and Georgia. Maybe don’t lose to Florida next time?
Well, if we beat OSU, we’d have 4 top 10 wins, but sure. Still being #5 vs #8 in the playoff doesn’t mean a whole lot. In the playoffs, there’s nowhere to hide. You either win your games or you get bounced. Doesn’t matter much beyond that aside from getting to play at home.
You’d have been 5 before this game. In the theoretical world where Texas has beaten OSU, A&M and OU in the top 10, plus a top 15 Vandy they are a probably getting a first round bye. If they had a cupcake instead of OSU, they probably wouldn’t have a first round bye. Bye games and seeding is huge. You’ve still got to win your games, sure, but it gives you more room for mistakes and your opponents less.
It’s a calculated risk. There’s pros and cons. Texas lost the gamble this year. A&M won on that front, a loss to Notre Dame would probably mean we are out of the playoffs, but we won, and will probably have a first round bye.
Yeah, it's a different format, so this year the big 12 champion won't get way closer to winning than anybody else with a bye?
Either way, doesn't seem like such a big advantage that it's worth risking missing the playoffs over.
I don't think A&M is getting the first round bye anyhow, unless the committee wants to let them hop teams that lose their conference championships and they get some upset help. They are going to be 6th or 7th coming out of this weekend without upsets, right? Oklahoma is a higher ranked win than Notre Dame so I would think they'll be below Mississippi. I'm not sure beating ND instead of garbage will change anything at all about their seed.
The real question is when you play it out over a whole season.
Does going 3-1 OOC against quality teams reflect better than going 4-0 against FCS teams with a 7-1 or 6-2 conference schedule. If the answer is that the wins are more important than the games, every team will just pay no-name schools half a million to come get beat by their backups. If the championship is on the line, why would you risk losing even one out of four OOC games if you can just pay a few mil to avoid the risk.
Obviously its better if you beat them all, but why risk it.
I don't think anyone is taking credit for a game we lost. We're pointing out that if we didn't willingly schedule a blue blood then we'd absolutely be in.
It's really not that difficult to understand. The willful ignorance is embarrassing.
Where is the 200 yards coming from? I added Tex passing and rushing and then subtracted OSUs passing and rushing and got 126.
About 35 of those yards came on the final Texas drive where OSU was playing prevent. Either way, I guess we're lucky yards don't determine who wins the game. Just an odd argument to make.
Yeah, it wasn't that egregious but that was one of the few games we've played this year where we easily outrushed the opponent. Our QB just shit the bed unfortunately. He's playing vastly better football of late thankfully.
Your numbers are right but I think the prevent point makes no sense. We were driving to tie a one score game, it’s not like Texas was racking up yards while down 3 scores
I really don’t think anyone is pointing to that loss as the reason you’re out. It’s the 2 OT wins against very bad teams and the loss to Florida my guy.
If Texas had two losses, one being Florida, they'd be in no question. Eliminate any one of those losses and Texas is in. Had Texas scheduled Samford instead of Ohio State, they're in.
"Then" ranks mean nothing. OSU is crazy over rated. They only have one ranked win against......#16 Texas. You are literally flip flopping as well considering previous ranks in one breath and then discounting them in the next.

What a bipolar season for the Longhorns.
