Casual Ohio St fans should be ashamed

Over 5,000 hate filled comments have showed up on Ohio St kicker Jayden Fielding’s social media since last night. Fanbase should be ashamed they’re harassing one of their own, it isn’t good for the player, team, or sport. No excuse for it, touch grass. Hope the fanbase can lift up this young man in time for their next game instead of tearing him down even more.

It’s ruined everything. Podcasts, sports news, sports pregame shows, sports in general, generations of mostly young men, their families, society.

You can’t consume any media without ads for it, every talk show gives the betting lines and odds, it’s in person at games, whole teams are sponsored (soccer). When vices are pushed like this, they become normalized, think smoking. When something is normalized to this extent it becomes cultural. When something is cultural and addictive and built to take all you have, it ruins lives and families and gets passed down and can ruin generations.

Sports gambling and its ease of access is disgusting. I’m no angel, I love craps but I have to go to Vegas to play craps. It’s about ease of access and cultural norms and if we don’t pivot a lot of lives will be destroyed. We will look back on this period of sports gambling the same way we look at cigarette advertising, the heroin and crack epidemics of the past.

Sorry for the rant but I see all this, and I work in the service industry and I hear peoples’ conversations and it’s bad. Real bad. People that would never touch gambling are being looped in by the media that it’s ok and recruited by their friends and even strangers.

Edit: to add, I touched on ease of access. Think of every famous US gambling city, Vegas, Reno, Atlantic City; they’re all shit holes full of fake glamour and real broken dreams. If media and social media are considered digital town squares, they’re digital slums for the public to get their fix, whatever it is, from their phones.

Imagine if vape juice was advertised a much as sports betting during sports games.

There's legislation against advertising tobacco products. It doesn't extend fully to vaping, but it's why you don't see tons of ads per game for cigarettes.

Heck, even alcohol ads have rules about what they can and can't show, remember the beer commercial with the two dudes talking about not being able to drink during the commercial?

As far as I know the only gambling restriction is that they have to have the help line number and disclaimer on the ad.

So I guess: contact your legislative representatives.

Sports betting and advertising is illegal in my state. There’s gray areas allowed by the federal Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), which I believe South Park even touched on. The federal government is actively working on further deregulation in this area.

The feds are working on deregulating everything, so that's no surprise. If sports betting is illegal in your state, makes sense ads for the same are.

Unfortunately if you live in a state where sports betting is legal, I've yet to see any regulations on gambling ads at least as they come in sports media.

Really there's little regulation on sports betting that I've seen if it's legal in your state. Heck ESPN, with the broadcast rights to the SEC, has a betting platform.
