If Bama’s jet sweep on 4th and 1 at their own 30 had folks wondering about the head coaching disparity -

One head coach was part of the Saban tree during the peak of the Saban Bama Death Star.

One head coach was IU’s offensive coordinator in 2019…

Jokes aside, IU’s HC/OC/DC trio of Cig/Shanahan/Haines is one hell of a three headed dragon. Phenomenal discipline, preparation, and execution, arguably the best coached team in college football rn. Cig & Co. saw 0-6 for bye teams before the game today and said, “bet”

One last thing, somebody check in on Josh Pate

For me it was kicking the field goal down 24-0 with 17 minutes left. 3 points does absolutely nothing for you but show that you are a loser coach

u/hlfazn Clemson Tigers Jan 02 '26

Had to prevent the shutout, right?

Gator move.

Gotta take what you can get

u/Individual_Section_6 Jan 02 '26

In hindsight I think preventing the shut out made it worth it.

Why wouldn't they? Their coach had just waived a white flag when there was still time to mount a comeback, even if it was unlikely. It was such a cowardly move.

3

u/OwnKnowledge628 Jan 02 '26

Also what happened to Simpson why was bro in civilian clothes so soon 😭😭

4

u/WreckinBawl Indiana Hoosiers Jan 02 '26

Cracked rib from a helmet during that two hit wallop he took that resulted in a fumble & recovery for IU.

4

u/OwnKnowledge628 Jan 02 '26

Gotcha I was confused what had happened

4

u/TickleMyIvory Michigan Tech • Michigan Jan 02 '26

This is 1000% a James Franklin move. (Sorry VT bros).

3

u/Fragrant-Employer-60 Jan 02 '26

Especially finishing with 3 points, that always makes it look worse lol

1

u/FeveStrench Alabama • Third Saturday in … Jan 02 '26

Yeah I complained very loudly when that happened. That was absolutely throwing in the towel on the season. Go down fighting, fuck the 3 points.

1

u/joeveralls Cincinnati Bearcats • Ohio Bobcats Jan 02 '26

It has to be especially frustrating with you all because of the coach Saban was

308

u/MysteriousEdge5643 Washington Huskies • College Football Playoff Jan 02 '26

I cannot believe he picked Alabama after he spelled out all the advantages for IU. He’s rumored to be a Bama fan and that sealed it for me. That’s exactly the type of delusional thing you come with when you are trying to be a homer for your team

109

u/tirusleepunk Georgia Bulldogs Jan 02 '26

His wife is a bama alum I think. He went to their spring practice in person. Lol it's not a rumor. It's just fact.

4

u/Kanin_usagi Auburn Tigers • UAB Blazers Jan 02 '26

He’s an Auburn fan, it’s just that he also is that Finebaum-type of media personality that pushes Alabama as the best team always because it’s draws engagement. Also, his wife is an alum, so that tends to muddy the waters

12

u/0venbakedbread Indiana Hoosiers Jan 02 '26

He did that on purpose so he can pretend he was kind of right in his game reaction.

"I picked the wrong team. There is no doubt about that. But for everyone saying...Josh, you were so wrong. Everything I said IU was good at, they did. I wasn't wrong in my assessment of the teams' strengths and weaknesses, just the outcome. Now, it is hard to beat a team twice which is why I'm picking Oregon in the semi-finals."

3

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '26

Pate picked Oregon both times against us in 2023.

44

u/nw____ Oklahoma Sooners • Iowa Hawkeyes Jan 02 '26

All he cares about is engagement. Total hack. This will just further incentivize him to make even more incredibly vague, unfalsifiable statements. Nobody has ever said less with more words than him.

11

u/JBfan88 Ohio State Buckeyes Jan 02 '26

He's so obsessed with not being a hot take merchant that he just talks in circles and says nothing.

His big 'joke' is when he picks against his 'model' and says 'i want all the credit and none of the blame'. He speaks out of both sides of his mouth so he can make a video later showing how he was right.

I'd much rather watch someone who can explain the actual game of football, Xs and Os.

2

u/superfiercelink Georgia Tech • Transfer Portal Jan 02 '26

When Pate left Columbus is when he went to shit. I loved watching his YouTube channel when we was broadcasting out of WTVM

2

u/Kanin_usagi Auburn Tigers • UAB Blazers Jan 02 '26

The times that he talks about Columbus are still the times we he’s at his best lol. Towards the middle of the season he had a small tangent about Peachtree Mall and it gave me a good laugh

51

u/YWingSupremacist Indiana Hoosiers Jan 02 '26

Pate’s a fucking hack

6

u/TheNittanyLionKing Penn State Nittany Lions Jan 02 '26

I don’t know how college football could possibly have an industry plant, but he sure seems like one to me

9

u/Always_Chubb-y Georgia Bulldogs • Transfer Portal Jan 02 '26

Im just shocked hes gotten THIS far having almost no actual takes and just bouncing back and forth between sides of the fence like a see saw

12

u/OverallBudget8628 Jan 02 '26

He seems like a very nice guy and has the gift of gab, but his ball knowledge is shockingly low

12

u/YWingSupremacist Indiana Hoosiers Jan 02 '26

dude spent 5 minutes saying why IU would win on his show just to say “ehhh idk, Bama to win and cover”. But i’m also highly confident this was probably the first full IU game he’s watched all season

14

u/Always_Chubb-y Georgia Bulldogs • Transfer Portal Jan 02 '26

He's a "closeted" Bama fan, even other SEC team fans know this

I'll be honest, I was curious to see if there might be any let down after the high that was winning the B1G for Indiana, but lord above they looked good. The game was over from the 2nd Indiana drive

6

u/acewing Indiana Hoosiers Jan 02 '26

Eh, he's admitted many times on his show he's watched our games. The thing is he watches the media edited versions afterwards, but I'm not convinced he pays close attention

1

u/TheFifthPhoenix Ohio State • Cincinnati Jan 02 '26

Tbf he did the same thing with Miami and OSU before picking OSU

5

u/BigD994 Kansas Jayhawks • Verified Media Jan 02 '26

I have a couple friends who worked for 247 at the same time he did. May be nice, but apparently no one on earth loves them self more than Josh Pate loves himself.

1

u/OverallBudget8628 Jan 02 '26

Well, his whole media empire is based on him talking to himself in front of a camera. Stands to reason that would require high self esteem lol

3

u/karmew32 LSU Tigers • Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Jan 02 '26

I picked Bama despite thinking IU was the better team in every facet including coaching. It was because with how much neutrals (including myself) love IU and hate Bama, I expected Murphy's Law to kick in. Next time, I should just go with my head & heart.

1

u/nakeddogs Georgia • 学習院大学 (Gakushuin) Jan 02 '26

he literally said he was only picking them because nobody else was lol

40

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '26

What did Pate say before the game? He’s the master of laying ground work to claim vindication regardless of who wins.

38

u/acewing Indiana Hoosiers Jan 02 '26

Laid out all reasons IU would win, stays consistent with how he's behaved all season and picks Alabama over IU.

9

u/BackgroundSolution75 Jan 02 '26

i’ll give him this, he made the pick that bama would win the chip at the start of the year. so he stuck to it

15

u/Starracer88 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Jan 02 '26

Its an insane thing to say but today Indiana reminded me of a Nick Saban led team

13

u/bigdjohnson20 SEC Jan 02 '26

Cig was at Bama during the "Make His Ass Quit" Saban days so that's the image he is creating

15

u/ImminentShadows Indiana Hoosiers Jan 02 '26

It’s a very underrated coaching staff going into the year. It goes really under the radar that they have been together for 5+ years now and know exactly what each other expects out of them and it’s all business each week

1

u/mishonis- Jan 02 '26

Huh, is that true? Why does Cignetti get all the praise in that case. To be honest, he strikes me as a bit of an egocentric.

2

u/ImminentShadows Indiana Hoosiers Jan 02 '26

Yep I think they’ve been together since like 18-20 range. I live in the area and all the radio interviews of him he doesn’t sound like he does on game days. He has said that he’s very hands off with the defense and Haynes runs everything with it for the most part cig just gets brought into the loop and makes sure he likes it. He trusts his coordinators to do everything so he can focus on the players himself. Everything I’ve heard from him or the players seems like the old school hard nosed in your face coach to make you better but will do anything for you.

27

u/dubcwa Washington Huskies Jan 02 '26

Deboer ran that exact play at Washington against WSU in the 2023 Apple Cup from our own 35 and it won the game for us. Except this time he doesnt have Rome Odunze

16

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '26

And i think more importantly he’s playing the number 1 ranked team in the country not Washington State

5

u/Ok-Height1910 Washington Huskies • Pac-12 Jan 02 '26

remember tho, we ran a jet sweep against ASU in 2022 on 4th and 1 and didn't get it. ASU scores on the next drive, and we lose by a touchdown

2

u/srush32 Washington • Oregon State Jan 02 '26

Also wasn't playing the Cougs today lol

6

u/inocomprendo Georgia Tech • Navy Jan 02 '26

Clickbait Pate!!!

6

u/ryanstrikesback Michigan • Bowling Green Jan 02 '26

I know they aren’t related, but A Shanahan that’s a good offensive coordinator? Who could see that coming.

5

u/hlfazn Clemson Tigers Jan 02 '26

It's like Brian Kelly and Chip Kelly.

8

u/DirtThief Oklahoma • Red River Shootout Jan 02 '26

It was definitely cathartic seeing a reckless 4th down try bite them. They did one of those against us when they were down 17 and it was key for them turning it around.

5

u/Spinax_52 Indiana Hoosiers Jan 02 '26

That 3 headed dragon has been coaching together since IUPUI. Kinda insane to think, there’s probably dozens of extremely talented coordinators like them in the FCS level, but nepo babies or people with connections get the spots instead at the top jobs

3

u/Arcades Miami Hurricanes • Michigan Wolverines Jan 02 '26

I don't think it's arguable anymore. Cignetti and staff are the best in the game. Other head coaches have more achievements or rings (for now), but Cig is #1.

2

u/Powerful-String-9143 Iowa Hawkeyes Jan 02 '26

He doesn't acknowledge when he's wrong.

2

u/PshhhhhhhUnreal Alabama Crimson Tide • Troy Trojans Jan 02 '26

Yes current Indiana is actually the spiritual successor to Saban’s Bama. Current Bama is just another team in the running for a playoff berth.

1

u/beige_man Iowa State • Ohio State Jan 02 '26

Curt being part of that machine is like Darth Vader remembering he was Anakin, and hurling Palpatine down.

1

u/0venbakedbread Indiana Hoosiers Jan 02 '26

I respect Josh Pate for allowing me to be able to know who he was going to pick in this game without even having to watch him say it. His predictably is nice.

1

u/TickleMyIvory Michigan Tech • Michigan Jan 02 '26

Wait what did Josh Pate say pre game?

1

u/agentfelix Jan 02 '26

And if I'm not mistaken, they've locked up Haines and Shanahan for the foreseeable future as well.

1

Arguably?

Reminds me a bit of Wisconsin but with a better quarterback situation. The run game is the bread and butter, and both backs can be leaned on.

Kirby took a program that always had the resources and finally pushed them over the hump. Cignetti took a historically bottom-5 team and has them 2 games away from a championship in his second year.

6

u/Rebel_Bertine Michigan • Western Michigan Jan 02 '26

It’s not particularly close either

Let’s see him win one without Stetson 😏

u/Luriker Iowa Hawkeyes • /r/CFB Poll Veteran Jan 02 '26

During the Saban era, there were always people on here asking “Do you think Nick Saban could do what he’s done at X” and it’d be places like Purdue, Indiana, Kansas…

People would always say that they’re different kind of skills and talk about Bill Snyder.

Smart is a phenomenal coach, and he’s earned his reputation for making the right claims about this sport in general. But I don’t think he could do what Cignetti’s done. I do think Cignetti could do what Smart has done at a program like Georgia.

Kirby Smart could absolutely do a great defense without 5-star recruits.

NIL has changed a lot, but Cignetti is the one to crack it open and show everyone just how much. Before him, a two-year turnaround for a program like IU would be unthinkable. I think you're overestimating IU previously (though they did have some really fun offenses to watch some years where they still didn't crack 7 wins). They entered this season with the most losses of any program in history.
