Rutgers paid UMass $1.5 million for that game…

Imagine paying a team a bunch of money to lose to them on BTN. Couldn't be me. Haha... ha........

Big Ten Network was launched at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time on August 30, 2007, with Big Ten Tonight as its inaugural program. The network aired its first live telecasts two days later on September 1, which included a football game between Appalachian State and Michigan

I never realized ya’ll get upset on the first day of BTN lmao

u/wit_T_user_name Ohio State Buckeyes • Ohio Bobcats Sep 04 '26

Hardly anyone saw it live because nobody carried the Big Ten network back then.

116

u/WirlingDirvish Michigan Wolverines • College Football Playoff Sep 04 '26

So basically the whole B1G should be thanking Michigan for convincing people to get the Big Ten Network. We really kickstarted people’s interest in the network.

I wonder how many Buckeyes and Spartians subscribed in the 4th quarter just to watch the end.

u/wit_T_user_name Ohio State Buckeyes • Ohio Bobcats Sep 04 '26

They showed the end of it on the Jumbotron at the Shoe.

More than 6 I’d say

1

u/Thiege1 Sep 04 '26

Should we thank Michigan or App St

3

u/WirlingDirvish Michigan Wolverines • College Football Playoff Sep 04 '26

Replace App state with a different roughly equivalent team and it’s the same reaction.

Replace Michigan with another B1G team and nobody gives a shit unless it’s OSU or maybe PSU. I don’t remember the preseason rankings that year.

Can you really believe it’s been near 20 years since 2007? That was such a crossroads with the Internet’s role in sports or popular culture. Back then, Youtube was not even in 480p yet! And legal streaming of TV shows was just getting off the ground, so if you couldn’t watch live you had to DVR or God forbid Torrent. Music videos were scattered around Yahoo Music, MTV.com, Blastro, etc.

And back to college football, finding niche sports channels like BTN was at the whim of Comcast or Charter in contrast to today where the networks create their own streaming subscription services.

u/Piglet6482 Arkansas Razorbacks Sep 04 '26

Think about us poor schmucks back when they could only show like 3 games per weekend.

Edit: not to mention no internet

u/SusannaG1 Clemson Tigers • Furman Paladins Sep 04 '26

Our household was undoubtedly like many that day: "What the hell is the 'Big Ten Network'?"

We already knew where Appalachian was, though.

3

u/Manning_bear_pig Montana State Bobcats • Miami Hurricanes Sep 04 '26

I think they might have been doing a free promotion that day or something. Because me and my friends watched the last few minutes at my house. And my parents would have never knowingly paid for the BTN.

2

u/AhvenDGale Ohio State • Ball State Sep 04 '26

I happened to see it live because I was at a bowling alley. As the game stayed close and time ticked down, more and more tvs went to it. The place erupted in cheers when that kick was blocked. Beautiful.

2

u/ufdan15 South Carolina • Florida Sep 04 '26

I remember Time Warner Cable had it and we saw it as it happened and were STUNNED. My parents were going on and on about how "there they go again. Michigan is gonna get away with it like always!" I wanna say OSU played Youngstown State? They seemed to always play them when Tressel was coaching to basically fund YSU.

u/Just_Brendan Notre Dame • Jeweled Shillelagh Sep 04 '26

Nah. I seent it.

2

u/reshp2 Michigan Wolverines Sep 04 '26

I remember driving around town in the Chicago suburbs trying to find a bar that carried BTN. Finally found one around half time, walked in expecting to be up big already. Instead got to get ridiculed by Illinois and Northwestern fans for the next 2 hours, good times.

1

u/sully213 Penn State Nittany Lions Sep 04 '26

I was at a sports bar that day. There was a single Michigan fan in the house. Watching that man's emotional rollercoaster was pure cinema. Everyone in the bar was screaming for App State that day once we all realized there was hope of an upset and then final few minutes, OMG. It was wild!

1

u/Sei_Mal_Ehrlich Iowa State Cyclones Sep 04 '26

I just watched a YouTube highlights video of this game and there are maybe 150 App State fans in the stands. Imagine how great this day was for them.

3

u/wit_T_user_name Ohio State Buckeyes • Ohio Bobcats Sep 04 '26

Being a fan like that is fun because there’s zero downside. You go in expecting to lose anyway. When OU was only down 13-9 in the third quarter at the Shoe last year, we were having a a great time as opposing fans.

1

u/Sei_Mal_Ehrlich Iowa State Cyclones Sep 04 '26

yeah down by four at the Shoe for OU is a great result. Never mind the final score.

1

u/14Calypso Nebraska • Minnesota State Sep 04 '26

We received it, and we watched the end of that game.

16

u/plinywaves Northern Illinois Huskies Sep 04 '26

How are they broke with big 10 dustributions???

30

u/BlueRaider731 Ole Miss Rebels Sep 04 '26

They’re spending more than they’re bringing in trying to keep up with the big dogs. They made promises to Schiano when he was hired. They applied to the, if you build it, they will come, mentality. Not paying off presently.

3

u/rocketboi10 Ohio State • Rutgers Sep 04 '26

They aren’t getting the full payout until this year and have been paying the 25th highest coaching staff for a while

1

u/default-username Texas Longhorns • Red River Shootout Sep 04 '26

These types of posts are usually dumb, because the home team makes plenty of revenue to cover the double the cost, and the payment is really just a smart business decision - win or lose. But Rutgers lost money on this game.

1

u/CaterpillarJungleGym Sep 04 '26

I'm confused about the broke comment. Rutgers got rid of many good sports programs to invest more into football. Like they even cut the crew team. Is that what you mean?

55

u/Dennisfromhawaii Rutgers • Hawai'i Sep 04 '26

On top of that, Schiano's buyout this year is 17.3 million.

40

u/Difficult_Trust1752 Eastern Michigan • Penn State Sep 04 '26

Why does a Rutgers coach have a fucking buyout?

8

u/DryMission5506 Florida State Seminoles • Paper Bag Sep 04 '26

Virtually every FBS coach has a buyout, and you can typically negotiate a lower salary if you’re willing to accept concessions on a buyout.

3

u/Kooky_Molasses_2270 Toledo Rockets Sep 04 '26

There should be protests in New Brunswick and Trenton today. This program has been getting by on a 3 year run from 20 years ago. Meanwhile they’ve kept jacking up tuition on the students. Sell everything for parts, go to D-2.
