Dan Lanning killed James Franklin Penn State just to become them

288

u/AceMcStace Oregon Ducks Sep 12 '26

Congratulations Dan Lanning for winning the 2026 James Franklin Epic Collapse award!

22

u/Fit_Minute_2632 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Sep 12 '26

It's not an epic collapse until he loses three winnable games in a row.

One down, two to go

Our next is against Portland State, I think. Not to tempt fate, but... yeah. The Vikings are low in the Sky.

8

u/chemshua Penn State • North Carolina Sep 12 '26

Oregon to lose at Portland St next week?

4

u/couducane Oregon Ducks • BYU Cougars Sep 12 '26

Sure, why not.

7

u/DrVonD Georgia Bulldogs Sep 12 '26

This is not a James Franklin game. He almost always (until they were just bad last year) won the games he was supposed to. His problem was he couldn’t win a big one

u/ToastyTandy Penn State Nittany Lions Sep 12 '26

You forget Temple. Who we just played today.

Happy for him. That's a strong start. More scared of the other other former Oregon OC with  Wildcats—Chip Kelly's in Northwestern.

Oooo good idea. This should be a r/CFB award each year!

TBH I think that's another one where he finishes 2nd to Ryan Day

(prime) James wins this game

224

u/DataDrivenPirate Ohio State • Colorado State Sep 12 '26

Yeah I feel like people have forgotten who James Franklin was. Until that Oregon game broke him last year, he never really lost the games he was supposed to win, he just couldnt figure out how to do anything but lose in games he was supposed to lose.

84

u/MaizeRage48 Michigan Wolverines • Rose Bowl Sep 12 '26

Yeah prime James rarely lost games they were the favorite in. The problem was he had exactly 1 big upset 10 years ago.

Just factually untrue but this is the James Franklin caricature that was created ex post facto last season

Several of those losses to lesser teams kept us from playoff appearances in the 4 playoff era

10

u/PSU632 Penn State • Land Grant Trophy Sep 12 '26

We'd have made it in 2016 had we beaten Pitt.

7

u/Southern_Bunch_1047 Penn State • Delaware Sep 12 '26

I might be wrong but pretty sure Pitt was favored in that game.

7

u/WON95sr Creighton Bluejays Sep 12 '26

Yeah that season was turned around after the OT win vs Minnesota(?) and then of course Ohio State

2017 and 2018 were blown by losing to Michigan State as I recall, but I can't remember how good those Dantonio teams still were at that time

8

u/Southern_Bunch_1047 Penn State • Delaware Sep 12 '26

2017 Michigan State was 1 week after the loss to Ohio State and MSU finished ranked 15th. It also had the massive weather delay when Penn State had momentum in the 2nd quarter.

2018 was inexcusable.

-1

u/DataDrivenPirate Ohio State • Colorado State Sep 12 '26

Excluding the COVID year and his first year, the only regular season losses he had to teams that finished the season unranked were 2015 Temple, 2016 Pitt, 2018 Michigan State, and 2021 Illinois.

If those are the reason y'all fired him that's fine but that's certainly not what we heard from the PSU fan base at the time.

Literally no one is or has said this?

Several of those losses to lesser teams kept us from playoff appearances in the 4 playoff era

Michigan st in 2017 is literally the only game In Franklin’s tenure there that could fit that description. What are the other 2+ you’re thinking of?

0

u/Roar-Lions-Roar Penn State Nittany Lions Sep 13 '26

Pitt 2016
2018 collapsed after MSU as well
Minnesota 2019

You’re gonna say I’m insane for mentioning it, but the way we lost the 2023 Michigan game where they didn’t have to throw a single pass in the second half was downright pathetic. Harbaugh got suspended on the tarmac on the way to the game. Talk about having literally everything going in your favor and fumbling it.

1

u/poop-dolla Virginia Tech Hokies Sep 13 '26 edited Sep 13 '26

Pitt was the favorite in 2016, so that one doesn’t fit your narrative. In 2018, they last as underdogs to OSU and UM, and wouldn’t have made it in the playoffs as a 2 loss team, so that one’s also out.

The Minnesota one counts, even though it was a road loss to the #13 team in the country.

So literally 2 examples of what you said over his entire tenure, and one was a road loss to the #13 team.

And yeah, your 2023 example is crazy. Michigan went on to be the national champions. They were the best team in the country. Even if they’re playing with a substitute head coach that game, they were still the best team in the country. And Harbaugh didn’t call plays, so they still had their play callers, and the coordinators knew what the game script was supposed to be from the week of practice.

Yeah that’s way off. James wins that game every season before the collapse.

True. OSU didn’t have a number by their name so Franklin rolls.

James Franklin up until the very very very end would never have lost this game. Would have walked out of Stillwater having won 27-17 and you can’t convince me otherwise.

Nah James Franklin wouldn’t lose to an unranked team that just lost to Tulsa a week ago.

James Franklin would have lost to a sixth ranked Oregon team though.

I'm not one to criticize coaches in hindsight if a 4th down call doesn't pan out.

But in this case I was able to criticize the call beforehand.
