Turns out you need to be the underdog in the game. Or have a QB that can make good reads.

So that one game outweighs the 15 or so others where he looked like an nfl guy?

Yea, he's everything we wish Mateer would be. And he's only a year 2 guy and I believe a walk on?

u/TheArmageddon12 Oklahoma State Cowboys Sep 12 '26

He never played a game of football, including high school, from start to finish until like a year ago.

It's actually insane how guys can play their whole lives and not learn how to read a defense. Then there's Mestemaker.

yeah, that shit really is crazy when you put it like that.

I think coach should get a lot of credit for this week. Defense also. But yeah mestemaker looked like baby josh allen.

And O line, they did not block like this against Tulsa. And we had multiple injuries their this game

Middle and high school football is a lottery. You never know if you are going to get a coach who wants to actually coach you so you have a shot in college and beyond or one that is there just to win and will install the flashiest but easiest scheme that puts up numbers.

My wife is good friends with Mestemaker’s mom. His story is amazing and no one deserves success at qb more than he does. He’s most certainly a Heisman contender and first round NFL draft pick.

Good for him. You love to see it. And in an ideal world he would play all of his college ball at Oklahoma State (and hopefully he does.)

I watched the end of that game after I got home from work.

Because I didn't have anything better to do on a Friday evening.

He was a punter/safety in high school. Emo is a qb whisperer

Yeah, walked on at UNT. Took over as the starter last year, and now doing awesome things. Glad to see him and coach Morris do well today

This kinda of goes without saying, doesn't it?

1

u/iLoveTacosPNW Sep 12 '26

You would think so, yet so many “experts” had Mateer on their Heisman watch lists.

Saw most of that game. Doing house stuff and peeking in every series or so. I recall a few just, bad passes from Mateer. Might have been a 3rd down towards the end of the game where he rifles it to his tight end who had just cleared the defender. Think that might have been a play that continued that final drive, or the driver before it.

We had a WR wide open in the middle of the field but he threw the ball to the TE in double coverage. TE almost caught it with one hand, but still. Open guy > double coverage any day of the week.

1

u/FoodieFattie Texas Longhorns Sep 12 '26

You may be right. My point was that with a bit of touch I think the TE catches it, even though the read was poor.

1

u/LGWalkway Oklahoma Sooners • Paper Bag Sep 12 '26

Yea, i'm not sure how he regressed mentally when he's actually healthy. He can throw the ball better, but his placement is horrible. The pick was a slightly underthrown pass that needed more air and its likely a catch.

I assure you neither was necessary to score 48 points today.
