That was the worst final play call I’ve ever seen.

u/Kuntheman Paper Bag Sep 13 '26

I genuinely have no clue what their plan was after the penalty

404

u/RightC Arizona State Sun Devils Sep 13 '26

Looked like it was supposed to be a hook and ladder that got shut down

225

u/jon__koa Miami Hurricanes • Tennessee Volunteers Sep 13 '26

Hook and ladder with no ladder

39

u/Kuntheman Paper Bag Sep 13 '26

Shook and battered

Hook and stepstool

4

What are you doing, Stepstool?!

5

Hook and sadder

1

u/SaltyBarDog Sep 13 '26

Hook and shat.

4

u/whatifevery1wascalm Alabama Crimson Tide • Iowa Hawkeyes Sep 13 '26

So.. just a hook. But, the Hook brings you back...

2

u/NervouseDave Sep 13 '26

I ain't telling you no lie

6

u/throwsupstaysup Texas Longhorns Sep 13 '26

Hook and nada

3

u/OurCrewIsReplaceable Penn State Nittany Lions Sep 13 '26

I’ll start my own football game. With blackjack and hooks.

u/NatiAti513 Ohio State Buckeyes • Texas Longhorns Sep 13 '26

To who?! Brutus? Lol. There was nobody near him.

1

u/TheBrothersFedorov Vanderbilt • Michigan Sep 13 '26

In other words, a misdemeanor

1

u/lampshade69 USC Trojans Sep 13 '26

Hook em

1

u/grahamalondis Texas Longhorns Sep 13 '26

Isn't it a hook and latter? Like hook and lateral? Latter and ladder are pronounced exactly the same way but one makes sense because it describes the play and the other one sounds like a child's board game.

4

u/winslowpete Boise State Broncos Sep 13 '26

lol they thought they were us

7

u/PM_ME_EXCEL_QUESTION Texas Longhorns Sep 13 '26

Damn I’m old for getting that reference. Also bonus points since it was against OU

1

u/tommyTurds Sep 13 '26

One of the funniest games ever

1

u/avery-secret-account Notre Dame Fighting Irish Sep 13 '26

I think they wanted to do it the play before as well and just didn’t

1

u/Tarmacked USC Trojans • Alabama Crimson Tide Sep 13 '26

The receiver hesitated for some odd reason

1

u/FrostTroll69 Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 13 '26

It was a hook without the ladder

1

u/cbbutle South Carolina • Palmetto Bowl Sep 13 '26

Honestly good on the WR for not trying to force the lateral when he saw it fall apart

1

u/decoy777 Ohio State Buckeyes • The Game Sep 13 '26

Yeah it was that didn't go well. But smart to not toss it and fumble. But when you don't have a time out it's not gonna go well if you can't get out of bounds

1

u/FuckThesePeople69 Sep 13 '26

I thought it was hook and “latter”… as in lateral.  Am I crazy?  Either way, it ended up hook and horns tonight. Fun game.

2

u/Unrelenting_Salsa LSU Tigers • Georgia Bulldogs Sep 13 '26

No, it's hook and ladder. The nickname is a homage to snakes and ladders.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 13 '26

We call that the Hook ‘em and ladder 🤘🏻

0

u/Etherion77 Michigan Wolverines Sep 13 '26

Can't hook em against Texas

10

u/twisty77 Fresno State Bulldogs • Pac-12 Sep 13 '26

Day’s had some nasty late game playcalling chokes in his career

11

u/plinywaves Northern Illinois Huskies Sep 13 '26

Was definitely supposed to be a hook and ladder play but it fell apart.

Probably not worth trying some trickery like that unless you have practiced it a lot

1

u/foampro Washington Huskies Sep 13 '26

It was either that or a Hail Mary

5

u/size0618 Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 13 '26

“Establish the run”

Ryan Day, probably

2

u/JohnnieTightLips Wake Forest • Ohio State Sep 13 '26

Why not chuck up to J. smith, Calvin Johnson style

2

u/TheOrangeFutbol USC Trojans • Tennessee Volunteers Sep 13 '26

You see, it was a failed lateral setup in the middle of the field in your own territory with no timeouts to set up the final play where you have to dial up another miracle to get into field goal range, except time will run out before you can get out of bounds on the second miracle play.

It was very simple, really.

2

u/GreninjaStrike Louisville Cardinals Sep 13 '26

Do I really look like a guy with a plan

- Ryan Day

1

u/AutomaticAccident Kalamazoo Hornets • Michigan Wolverines Sep 13 '26

That, I think, is Ryan Day's biggest flaw as a coach: he can't improvise when the initial plan doesn't work.

1

u/opensourcefranklin Sep 13 '26

Looked like a failed hook and ladder. I think they knew Sayin can throw down the field like 45-50 yards max, a hail mary was never gonna happen.

141

u/GenuineGatorJorts Florida Gators Sep 13 '26

Did you see that one the Dallas cowboys did where Zeke Elliot was the only blocker and got destroyed

22

u/djrob0 Indiana Hoosiers Sep 13 '26

That was part of the play, you just dont understand.

18

u/devAcc123 Michigan Wolverines Sep 13 '26

That wa fucking hilarious

16

u/FatalTortoise Sep 13 '26

You mean where they set up for zeke to be the only blocker the 49ers see that call timeout and tell one of their many large men to just bowl his ass over if they try that again. And then they tried that again?

8

u/Oblivionguard19 Georgia Bulldogs • Sickos Sep 13 '26

Hey that play was a masterpiece. None of the so-called “greatest” coaches could have come up with something as genius as that.

7

u/GrandOcelot Northwestern Wildcats • Auburn Tigers Sep 13 '26

As a Niners fan that was hilarious. As was the QB sneak with no timeouts left and only a few seconds

6

u/KirbyDumber88 Georgia Bulldogs Sep 13 '26

I was at a cabin having a lazy 3 day weekend with a hunch of friends. (We go every year and pretend we’re still in college. No kids just all of us). I got out of the hot tub to do a shot of fire ball. Paused to watch the final play of the game. Thought Zeke died. Lol

2

u/swammeyjoe Texas Longhorns • Verified Referee Sep 13 '26

Hey hey now this is a happy day don't you go ruining it.

2

u/TA404 William & Mary Tribe • Team Chaos Sep 13 '26

ESPN used that play tonight as an example of what they’d call if they won the OC a Drive contest (something a school actually did).

I’d never heard of it and now twice within like an hour lol.

2

u/mongster03_ Cornell Big Red Sep 13 '26

And that was somehow only the second dumbest play call in a do or die final play moment in a 49ers-Cowboys game in the last five years

1

u/the_thinwhiteduke Auburn Tigers Sep 13 '26

This is the ultimate answer. And SF called a timeout like "are you sure this is how you want to go out" and McCarthy ran that same formation out there again.

The image of Zeke being ejected backwards with zero resistance will live forever

31

u/iwearatophat Ohio State • Grand Valley State Sep 13 '26

I think it was supposed to be a hook and ladder attempt but the ladder never came around.

Trying to recreate the Boise St touchdown, but they tried to do it with a 5 yard slant. Never had a chance

6

u/IamDoobieKeebler Wisconsin Badgers Sep 13 '26

Tbf I think Ryan day forgot everything he ever knew about football in that 4th quarter

2

u/AWaffleofDivinty Virginia Tech Hokies Sep 13 '26

They also forgot to put someone there to lateral to

1

u/dunno260 Alabama Crimson Tide Sep 13 '26

Those plays look great when they work but there is a reason why teams rarely run them too.

Not sure why people are giving Day too much heat about the final drive. No timeouts and 25 seconds. There is virtually nothing good you actually can do.

48

u/philphan25 Notre Dame • Penn State Sep 13 '26

They wanted hook and ladder but they played man lmao

7

u/Hippo-Crates Michigan Wolverines • Tulane Green Wave Sep 13 '26

it was a hook and lateral just didn't work out

6

u/owa00 Texas Longhorns Sep 13 '26

WILDCARD BABY!

4

u/Sea-Lawfulness7763 Sep 13 '26

Supposed to be a hook and ladder.

-1

u/Gold-Vacation2799 Sep 13 '26

Hook and lateral.

There's no ladder involved.

(This was a crossing pattern rather than a buttonhook, but that doesn't change the lateral part.)

2

u/Guson1 Texas Longhorns Sep 13 '26

Both are correct

3

u/livefreeordont James Madison Dukes Sep 13 '26

If it was a 30 yard pass over the middle to set up a Hail Mary that would make sense. But that was 12 yards

3

u/PFunk224 Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 13 '26

Over the middle is fine.

Over the middle and short of the sticks is fucking stupid.

21

u/wcalvert Texas Longhorns • /r/CFB Founder Sep 13 '26

Did it look like he was looking for someone on a hook and ladder who wasn't there?

6

u/No_Upstairs_811 Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 13 '26

the hook player had a texas player in between him and the ball carrier

I’ve seen worse

1

u/JX_JR Stanford Cardinal Sep 13 '26

But you did see it!

1

u/Ilikebeerandgirls Sep 13 '26

I’m gonna assume it was supposed to be a hook and ladder that they executed like shit lol

1

u/Stickaxe Sep 13 '26

It felt like Ryan Day and that offense had no plan at all for 2 minute drill needing a score. "Oh crap, we're not winning late in the 4th? Uhh...hail mary? No...okay. Let's try five-yard slant in bounds with no timeouts. Oh we lost."

1

u/Sixstringsickness Miami Hurricanes Sep 13 '26

Watching OSU in the playoffs last year, I was not impressed with Sayin.  Unsure why he generates so much hype.

1

u/Broseph247 Sep 13 '26

Worst 4th half play calling ever. Our play calling did a great job tiring out our own defense.

1

u/whee3107 Oklahoma Sooners Sep 13 '26

We were using the same “we suck at football” playbook, but we are on volume 5.

1

u/savageronald Georgia Tech • Auburn Sep 13 '26

Everyone hating on Ryan Day - as a Falcons fan, this has Arthur Smith written all over it. I mean Day sucks too, but man Arthur was a terrible hire.

1

u/stargrazer10 Sep 13 '26

We call that the Ryan Day special. It usually happens when the team needs solid coaching and clutch execution, but instead you get that.

1

u/L3tsseewhathappens Sep 13 '26

Guess you missed the last game with Michigan?

That entire final drive from Ohio was disaster class. They looked lost.

1

u/BasedRocker Ohio State Buckeyes • Ohio Bobcats Sep 13 '26

This thread is about Ohio State, sir.

-1

u/Spencer1K Alabama • Florida State Sep 13 '26

Part of reading comprehension is context clues.

0

u/BasedRocker Ohio State Buckeyes • Ohio Bobcats Sep 13 '26

Fair enough, PSU should just be called Pennsylvania too

0

u/Spencer1K Alabama • Florida State Sep 13 '26

PSU is shorter, which is why people use it. However, if someone really wanted to type out the entire states name, as long as proper context is involved its fine, just weird. Also if you want to be a pedantic asshole, your schools name is "The Ohio State University". So at least correct someone the correct way.

u/BasedRocker Ohio State Buckeyes • Ohio Bobcats Sep 13 '26

No, the THE is gay.
