As a Falcons fan Ryan Day is dumb for thinking an Arthur Smith offense is a winning strategy

u/DDub04 South Carolina • Palmetto Bowl Sep 13 '26

I was trying to remember where I knew that name.

Falcons/Steelers Arthur Smith?? Aw hell nah

23

u/LilBushyVert Miami Hurricanes Sep 13 '26

I knew he looked familiar too. A dolphins fan but I live in Atlanta

23

u/PlayerTP Tennessee • Middle Tennessee Sep 13 '26

But also 2019 Titans Arthur Smith

22

u/willinaustin Texas Longhorns Sep 13 '26

Not hard to hand the ball off to Prime Derrick Henry 400 times. A mentally disabled monkey could run that offense.

13

u/PlayerTP Tennessee • Middle Tennessee Sep 13 '26

Also had prime AJ Brown

8

u/Greatness143 Ferris State Bulldogs Sep 13 '26

Exactly, the only coaching success this guy has as an OC is having Prime Henry and Prime AJ Brown. I think I could run a competent offense with that

197-1.

I am a Michigan grad from New England. This boner is not going away anytime soon.

13

u/ozymand25 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Sep 13 '26

They have two former NFL coordinator/coaches as their OC and DC. Arthur Smith and Matt Patricia.

11

u/Rocky-Rocker Sep 13 '26

Both certified NFL Terrorists.

6

u/HDDIV Tennessee Volunteers Sep 13 '26

Also the son of Fred Smith of FedEx (fact for trivia night, I guess).

2

u/tkdxe James Madison Dukes • Sickos Sep 13 '26

The real value is hiring the OC who’s the heir to a mega fortune

4

u/thecarlosdanger1 Notre Dame • Cornell Sep 13 '26

Besides his TE fetish he was fine for the Steelers. Massive upgrade from Randy Fichtner and Matt Canada but that’s not saying much.

1

u/tkdxe James Madison Dukes • Sickos Sep 13 '26

I’m interested to see how Mike McCarthy compares to Smith. Arthur’s offense was certainly decently competent, but I think there’s some more there. I will say he was calling plays with a hand tied behind his back given the QB situation

29

u/MasterpieceNo5636 Georgia Bulldogs Sep 13 '26

I actually agree with you, and said that same shit. It seems the guy loves washed up ex NLF coordinators.

44

u/giraffe_entourage Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Sep 13 '26

Tbf Sark is also a washed up ex NFL coordinator from the falcons lmfaooooo

4

u/TripleA11 Texas Longhorns • Big 12 Sep 13 '26

A winning washed up ex NFL coordinator from the falcons*

11

u/giraffe_entourage Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Sep 13 '26

Glad he’s found success in Austin but thank God he’s not in Atlanta anymore he was hot ass before he went back to Saban School for Coaches Who Can’t Coach Good

5

u/MightyParticular2332 Sep 13 '26

I remember the random year he was the head coach at UW with Jake Locker at QB. When USC was still a gravy train lol

It’s worked out so far. Chip Kelly helped us win a championship. Matt Patricia has been great since he joined.

Maybe Arthur Smith is a miss.

37

u/GokuVerde Sep 13 '26

This fucker has failed everywhere he's gone and it's just job after job

21

u/Cannonhammer93 Tennessee Volunteers Sep 13 '26

He was alright at the Tennessee Titans, but it took two All Pro Tackles and fucking prime Derick Henry to work.

4

u/stealthywoodchuck Michigan Wolverines Sep 13 '26

I mean, how much coordinating did he really have to do there? Just give Henry the ball and watch

8

u/Cannonhammer93 Tennessee Volunteers Sep 13 '26

Pretty much how it went. And when you didn't feel like running just dial up a play action pass with one of the best play action QBs in Tannehill and have him throw it to AJ Brown. Just an embarrassment of riches that he has been coasting off of since.

Kinda hard to fuck that up

I really wish he wouldn't

1

u/PM_ME_RYE_BREAD Sep 13 '26

I mean that explains a lot about the opportunities he’s absolutely not earned and continues to receive

2

u/helpmeredditimbored Georgia Bulldogs • Virginia Cavaliers Sep 13 '26

Dude is the son of the founder of FedEx, why he’s wasting time coaching ball when he could be living off a trust fund I have now idea

1

u/foxmag86 Sep 13 '26

Same with Chip Kelly.

9

u/Distance_Runner Florida State • Wake Forest Sep 13 '26

At least it wasn’t 28-3. (Also a Falcon fan. It still hurts)

3

u/thecarlosdanger1 Notre Dame • Cornell Sep 13 '26

Wasn’t that Shanny as OC?

3

u/savageronald Georgia Tech • Auburn Sep 13 '26

Yes - Arthur and Sark weren't on the staff during that super bowl that didn't happen.

7

u/GoBlueScrewOSU7 Michigan Wolverines • Michigan Wolverines Sep 13 '26

I knew his dumbass idea of solely seeking out failed NFL head coaches as coordinators would eventually backfire.

2

u/seoul_drift Michigan Wolverines • Uppsala Snakeheads Sep 13 '26

Why doesn’t he just hire coordinators who will go on to become NFL head coaches? Is he stupid?

1

u/TheNittanyLionKing Penn State Nittany Lions Sep 13 '26

Ohio State fans told me that it would still be Day’s offense even though Day himself said that he hired Arthur Smith to be the head coach of the offense just like he hired Matt Patricia to be the head coach of the defense.

u/webbed_feets Ohio State Buckeyes • Texas A&M Aggies Sep 13 '26

Have you watched a Ryan Day offense? Last night was classic Ryan Day offense.

6

u/throwawaaayyyyyay Sep 13 '26

As a steelers fan I’m with you

1

u/TheNittanyLionKing Penn State Nittany Lions Sep 13 '26

As a Steelers and Penn State fan, I’m so glad he’s not with the Steelers and employed in Columbus, Ohio

3

u/GruffyMcGuiness Georgia Bulldogs Sep 13 '26

Only watched the last 2 minutes. Did we get any TE reverses with the blocking tight end?

3

u/wsteelerfan7 Indiana Hoosiers • Rose Bowl Sep 13 '26

I think Day told him Jeremiah Smith is a TE otherwise they wouldn't even be this good

4

u/jtezus Georgia • Florida State Sep 13 '26

Different jerseys but I’ve seen that same exact game plenty times before with AS

3

u/ranchdressinggospel Ball State Cardinals Sep 13 '26

Lmao Falcons fan also wearing a Falcons hat watching this game. Feel like I helped bring the bad vibes to Ohio State. Worth it.

3

u/spear1321 Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 13 '26

Arthur smith and Matt Patricia. Yeah……

2

u/kylkartz21 Michigan • Grand Valley State Sep 13 '26

As a Lions fan Ryan Day is dumb for thinking a Matt Patricia defense is a winning strategy

0

u/Alphaspade Iron Bowl • Sickos Sep 13 '26

Although surprisingly that one hasnt backfired yet

2

u/MindfulAthlete Notre Dame • Columbia Sep 13 '26

Arthur smith and Matt Patricia on either side of the ball 🤣🤣🤣

2

u/MattPatriciasFUPA Michigan • Summertime Lover Sep 13 '26

Art got confused when he didn't have Johnnu Smith to throw the ball to 40 times or Cordarrelle Patterson to run jet sweeps.

1

u/Zloggt Illinois Fighting Illini • Missouri Tigers Sep 13 '26

Imagine watching this as a Columbus FedEx worker who spends all week busting their ass moving boxes in a stuffy warehouse at that!

1

u/kevinthejuice Virginia Cavaliers • Team Chaos Sep 13 '26

Pick up that guy in Akron

1

u/androosh Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 13 '26

He did this long before Smith was OC. It's the Ryan Day special.

As a Steelers fan, 🤝🏼

1

u/Chesehead6 Sep 13 '26

Ohio state urgently petitioning for jonnu smith eligibility

He won with Chip who is objectively worse

Can't wait for the qb merry go round with the falcons this season. It's gonna be a long one.

1

u/Gold-Vacation2799 Sep 13 '26

His dad owns FedEx so you get all the NIL money when you hire him?

u/CarterAC3 Michigan • Grand Valley State Sep 13 '26

Arthur Smith offense vs Steve Sarkisian offense

Tough watch for Falcons fans

1

u/ASU_SexDevil Arizona State • Texas Sep 13 '26

I went OFF at halftime about how Arthur Smith, the worst OC in the NFL, was out coaching Will Muschamp…

The real Arthur Smith came out in the second half

1

u/Treskelion2021 Texas Longhorns • India National Team Sep 13 '26

He had Bijan Robinson and refused to use him. He’s also the son of the FedEx founder. So he’s probably a billionaire.

1

u/Lo-weorold Georgia Bulldogs • Syracuse Orange Sep 13 '26

Fellow falcons fan, yeah idk wtf he was thinking. I still don't understand how some of these dudes keep getting jobs.

1

u/carcatz Sep 13 '26

As a titans fan for whatever reason (Derrick Henry and AJ Brown on the roster) he was scoring 30+ points a game while in Tennessee

1

u/cogginsmatt Michigan Wolverines Sep 13 '26

And don’t even get a Lions fan started on Matt Patricia

1

u/opensourcefranklin Sep 13 '26

Idk how anyone saw his Steelers offense and says we want this guy. Though this defeat admittedly had way more to do with deciding soft ass zone coverage the entire 4th quarter was the move. Smothers either plunged up the middle for 8 yards or there was some guy wide open over the middle all three of those drives. Buckeyes were pretty lucky for all the miscues to that point, the secondary did not have the stuff tonight.

1

u/stargrazer10 Sep 13 '26

I never watched the Falcons. Was Arthur's game plan pretty much just stare down one star receiver all game, and forget all the other receivers on the field? Because yes my goodness I feel bad for all the non superstar WRs on that team. They are just support staff, if that

1

u/neuro_space_explorer Tennessee Volunteers Sep 13 '26

Steelers fan here, agreed.

1

u/BellBilly32 UCF Knights • Florida Gators Sep 13 '26

He just needs Jonnu Smith.

1

u/OnTheFenceGuy Texas Longhorns • Team Chaos Sep 13 '26

Yeah, this is the guy who notoriously REFUSED to give the ball the Bijan when he had basically ZERO other options.

1

u/liteshadow4 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Sep 13 '26

Arthur Smith is a good OC

3

u/Alphaspade Iron Bowl • Sickos Sep 13 '26

....did ya forget the /s?

1

u/liteshadow4 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Sep 13 '26

No, he did a great job in Tennessee and he made the Steelers offense work somewhat last year despite the pieces in Pittsburgh being awful.

1

u/TheNittanyLionKing Penn State Nittany Lions Sep 13 '26

He was terrible with the Steelers. He built an offense that had no ability to play from behind. He doesn’t get an award just for being better than Matt Canada because that describes pretty much every OC not named Matt Canada.

0

u/liteshadow4 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Sep 13 '26

No shit the Steelers offense wasn’t good, but Arthur Smith made them passable. I love Rodgers but he’s not what he once was. How do you expect an offense composed of Metcalf Rodgers Warren and Gainwell to be successful playing from behind.

1

u/TheNittanyLionKing Penn State Nittany Lions Sep 13 '26

I attribute that more to Rodgers and his experience.

1

u/vaccines_melt_autism LSU Tigers • Johns Hopkins Blue Jays Sep 13 '26

A better OC would figure out how to use his running game and Jeremiah Smith to conserve a 3-score lead.

0

u/dudewithchronicpain Michigan Wolverines Sep 13 '26

He got gifted a legendary osu team to win the natty
