I was a grad assistant in 2012 at Temple when Ryan Day was OC and every Wednesday when the team was doing conditioning in the weight room Day would make me and some other GAs sit in his office and he would give us mini lectures on art history. He would eat yogurt (usually Dannon but Yoplait wasn’t unusual) during them and called us his “Yogi Yogurt Boys”

34

4

u/Theretrulywascake West Virginia • Ohio State Sep 13 '26

He dropped multiple passes against Texas last year

1

u/DavoinShowerHandel1 Louisville • Ohio State Sep 13 '26

I'm not sure "uncharacteristic" means what you seem to think it does. He doesn't have stone hands, but he absolutely has some occasional drops.

1

u/InsertAmazinUsername Ohio State Buckeyes • Yale Bulldogs Sep 13 '26

everyone remembers his drops bc he has so few

1

u/DavoinShowerHandel1 Louisville • Ohio State Sep 13 '26

I respectfully disagree with that statement. Like I said he isn't out there trying to catch passes by slamming two bricks together or anything, but there's a few drops that don't make the stat sheet. They're very forgiving with the drop stat. That's not just a Smith problem, it's a larger problem with football as a whole, but he does drop some passes.

1

u/KikkiMonne Sep 13 '26

Texas finally got smart and started double-manning him

1

u/stargrazer10 Sep 13 '26

And then there was the times he should have gone more conservative. So yes hard to watch that kind of coaching when at times he's too conservative, and at other times he should be kicking field goals instead of attempting tough unnecessary fourth downs. Making just one extra field goal (instead of a failed 4th down attempt) would have won them the game

22

u/UnboiledBread Ohio State Buckeyes • College Football Playoff Sep 13 '26

Well if you’re not gonna count rings then he might as well coach at MSU, he’ll fit right in.

14

u/JuicyJay18 Michigan State Spartans Sep 13 '26

A muppet could’ve coached that roster to a natty lmao, the fact that he lost 2 games that year says enough. If he came to MSU he would be a perennial 8 win coach, plus or minus a game. I’m very aware of where my program is relative to Ohio State. That doesn’t make him a good coach.

Ryan day couldn't coach MSU to 8 wins.

Dude got handed the best job in the country because Urban Meyer can't control anyone and has missed out on 2-3 additional titles with his dumbassery.

If he didn't get handed the OSU job he'd never have gotten the job if he had to go the traditional OC -> p4/g5 HC route

5

This is the most spot on take I’ve read. Day is a loser

-5

u/UnboiledBread Ohio State Buckeyes • College Football Playoff Sep 13 '26 edited Sep 13 '26

I would totally hear your opinion out if you didn’t outright deny a ring. It’s like saying you don’t count Cigs ring because of NIL. It’s a new world and Ryan Day adapted with a 12 team playoff. Get a grip.

Edit: Lmao how many losses did the 2007 champion have?? Are you that young or that old that you can’t remember?

0

u/JuicyJay18 Michigan State Spartans Sep 13 '26

I acknowledge that his ring exists, I just don’t care about it lmao. That roster could’ve won a ring with no coach. The team wins in spite of him more often than not. If he were a better coach you guys would have 2 or 3 rings in the last 5 years, that’s how much talent your teams have had.

-3

u/UnboiledBread Ohio State Buckeyes • College Football Playoff Sep 13 '26

I can’t believe I’m telling a MSU fan that’s it’s harder to win a ring than you’d think it’d be, no matter the talent.

2

u/JuicyJay18 Michigan State Spartans Sep 13 '26

Most talented roster in the NCAA most years but he’s not winning the B1G, losing to Michigan more often than not, but I’m supposed to excuse all of that because he won a natty one year with an unfuckupable roster lmao. Sure man. He’s a great coach.

Yes, but not just that. What being the first coach in school history to blow a 17+ halftime lead does. What being the first coach in school history to blow a 20+ point 4th quarter lead does. He's in year 8 and he hasn't learned how to win these games, except a 4 game run in which his players bullied him into being aggressive enough to go win. And he even tried to blow two of those leads.

He’s a great leader and mentor to the young athletes he coaches, but he’s really not that great of an actual FOOTBALL coach on the FIELD. He is truly a great person but this isn’t high school or a coach carter esque movie. These are adults getting paid, they don’t need a lesson in class and values that will shape them into some upstanding citizens. they need a coach with an actual football mind. Classyness isn’t going to call the plays and manage the games.

Give Texas some credit. They looked like they were quitting at the end of the first half but came out and kept punching all the way to the finish.

I still can’t believe this guy won a natty just two years ago…

Wouldn't have won that without Chip Kelly running the offense.

u/KikkiMonne Sep 13 '26

It does seem like a fluke given Day's record in other big games

That’s what they always do. Once their wings start to melt, they just stop.

High end talent saves his ass every week, they play against a real team

It's giving me flashbacks to the UK in the World Cup. It's like they completely turned off.

Yep day loves to take an early lead and coast and try to win in the fourth quarter. He has said it before and he never learns. Should’ve won this game in the third quarter but no. Absolutely fucking brain dead

They do this every game, they let up. Not to placate IU, but they would have hung 100 on them

2

u/BigComfortable6667 Texas Longhorns Sep 13 '26

IU would never schedule a team with a pulse

u/BetterThanOCharleys Ohio State Buckeyes • Findlay Oilers Sep 13 '26

He has a tendency to play not to lose in these types of games. The entire second half it felt like a TD just puts it away and the offense never acted like it.

What?? Braindead coaching from Ryan Day? I'm shocked! Shocked!

Yeah, OSU could've absolutely put the throttle down & won by 30+ points.

Now, they have a L to an underwhelming Texas.

As a Steelers fan, I saw plenty of this Arthur Smith masterclass before.
