What baffles me with both Mateer and Reed is that they're zone read/triple option type quarterbacks. Maybe you could build in a little RPO into the game and spice it up.
Their offensive coordinators insist on making them pro-style pocket passing quarterbacks. And that's just not who they are, if you wanted that you should have gone with a different quarterback.
I think Reed is better than Mateer, I think he can be a really deadly dual threat but he's so infrequently used that way.
Reeds first game he came in against LSU and we ran read option every damn play and they could do nothing about it. Then we decided he should be a pocket passer and he's been ass ever since
Exactly. I vividly remember both dominant Reed performances against LSU. But particularly the first, he looked so dangerous and the commitment to putting the defense in conflict was so effective.
I don't blame Reed. If they wanted to run a different offense they should have gotten a quarterback who runs that offense. That's not Marcel Reed.
I was wondering why no one was saying this. I get protecting Reed but I think we had one QB keeper this entire match. It’s a rare matchup that Reed can win without scrambling. Without the threat of the QB keeper, they clamp down on the run and play man coverage leaving Reed one dimensional. And unfortunately when he’s under the gun, his passing game goes from okay to bad.
