Does anyone know the exact origin or meaning of "hotty toddy"? The Wikipedia page clearly shows that the chant was written as "Heighty Tighty" in a newspaper that was printed 100 years ago. The heighty tighty thing seems to have originated from the Virginia Tech regiment marching band some time in the later 1800s. At any rate, over time it's come to be Hotty Toddy, so I am curious what the actual words mean to students and alumni.
For a long while, I assumed it had to do with the warm whiskey drink, hot toddy, but it's clear that it did not originate from it. That doesn't mean that students, fans, and alumni don't associate it with whiskey at all- it is the South after all. I just figured that the history of the words would be passed from some fraternity member at Ole Miss in the mid 1920's to his son who joined the same fraternity in the mid 40s, and then his son did the same in the late 60s, and so on. Don't SEC schools excel at the art of the Greek system? Each house has a "historian," no?
Legit question - in the old College Football landscape, the school would pay FCC fines for stuff like that. But, with NIL.....is Chambliss getting that bill?
