I will never for the life of me understand leaving a team during your first ever (and possibly last) playoff run as a college football coach. I just can't do wrap my head around it. The difference in lifestyle between 10 million and 20 million is not the same as the difference between 1 million and 10 million.
If he had really wanted that job - LSU absolutely would've waited for him. He might have had a harder first year in the process but only if he coached in the national title game. If they lost with him coaching, he wouldn't have lost much if any time to spend on the recruiting trail.
Like I don't get it. Winning playoff games permanently increases his annual income no matter the job he takes in the future. His decision was just unwise and not even short sighted, just dumb. LSU nationally probably is more prestigious in every sport over Ole Miss. But that was because a different coach, Saban and Les Miles mostly, built that. If he wants prestige, he doesn't realize he can't just ride someone's coattails. He has build it. Ole Miss was a relatively blank canvas and he was starting a masterpiece. Somehow he handed a guy a playoff win for his first game AND that guy just beat him. Not only that, they probably have a Heisman candidate AND a chance at going to the playoffs again if they can manage 2 or less losses in Conference thanks to this win.
As a Hawkeye, LSU will always be amonst my most hated between recent WBB rivalries and also gave me one of my fondest memories in football - Tate to Holloway. Technically we are 1-0 all time against LSU since they cheated / vacated their bowl win against us as Former offensive lineman Vadal Alexander competed while ineligible for his entire career (2012–2015) after a booster's embezzlement scheme funneled payments to Alexander's father.
He had everything set up to be a legend at Ole Miss tbh. Im talking shit named after you. Would've required a decade of consistency but not impossible considering the recent successes.
This fact is why I hope Ole Miss wins the championship without him this season. Would be incredibly awesome to see the team he left to go to another team to win a championship win without him.
