He is a good DC but he was below what Alabama should have had though. I think he benefitted from there just being a revolving door of assistant coaches (because everyone wanted to come in and be a coach for 1 year and then jump to whatever was next) when Saban became a bit desperate to keep some continuity. From 2016-2019 Alabama changed OC five times in four seasons.
When he jumped from us to you guys my thought was he wasn't quite as good of a DC as Alabama should have (which should be top 5 DC or so DC in the country) but was also a better DC than Ole Miss was a program at the time.
Like I think he had some personnel problems in 2022 with us that hampered him some but Alabama's defense was considerably better and steadier with Kevin Steele in 2023 than it was with Golding even though I think Steele had a less talented group.
But all of that says nothing about the head coach he might be too.
I know that Bama fans hated him towards the end of it. I just think it’s crazy that there is a coach in college football that was Saban’s number one man on defense for years, won a title with him, and was begged not to leave by him. Meanwhile a new college head coach could have spent one year as a position assistant under Saban and it’s all anyone would talk about. I feel like most of the general public doesn’t know Golding was the DC for Saban for so long.

Pete Golding is 5-1 as head coach at Ole Miss and 4 of those wins are against ranked opponents.
