Interesting because it's the intra-family rivalry that I most enjoyed about the UT v A&M game. Immediate family tend to share the same team, so you'd have splits between the larger clan that often mirrored their school's cultural divides (rural v urban, cult v sanity, etc). The game could fill that space rather than politics. Friendly hating on half the family, and shared bliss/agony with the other half, was the best. I miss it.

Also, maybe it's a Texas thing, but the women would all watch alongside the men. For sure a family event.

There are several things to note. First, the division of family is fairly equal. Mississippi isn’t really rural vs urban anywhere. It’s like Oxford, Starkville, Jackson, and the coast as main areas vs everywhere else. College major would be a bigger thing but still nothing crazy. You have medical field, business, and lawyers from ole miss vs engineers for state. Like there really isn’t a huge divide between families tbh. State fans care way more about ole miss than the other way around. There’s a joke where if you want to know any ole miss stat just ask a Mississippi state fan. The game arguments are mostly about gambling or a bad call.

Politics really aren’t that different across Mississippi. Can’t say we ever had bad arguments about that unless someone was actually running themselves.

The final issue was family needing to be at the game as they were either band or a player. It was hell for them to have to miss thanksgiving several years in a row.
