How did the replay booth not show the refs Indiana clearly stepping out at the 12?!

333

u/GlutenFreeFratBoy Northwestern • /r/CFB Top Scorer 21d ago

And the commentary thats supposed to give transparency was just “mmhm….. so call is upheld yeah?” Embarrassing honestly lol

u/ranrow Texas Longhorns 21d ago

B1G has already shown that the ranked teams can’t lose

71

u/BorcBorcBorc Oregon Ducks 21d ago

Oh have they now? Where was our cut of this pie?

46

u/ExtraClapCider Penn State Nittany Lions 21d ago

Refs thought you were playing a different osu

They can only do so much and it would have been a real beat down without their help.

In big10 play at least

Because they played a big 12 School

Agreed, but flair up.

4

u/1869er Georgia • North Georgia 21d ago

Only prominent B1G losses this year have all been OOC road games

Really makes ya think!

1

u/thatshinybastard Utah Utes 21d ago

Don't referee crews usually come from the visiting team's conference in OOC games?

1

u/Sfmilstead Oregon Ducks • Pac-10 21d ago

Eh, we didn’t have anything the corporate bosses could help us with in that game.

3

u/midnightsbane04 Michigan • North Carolina 21d ago

I'm not sure the difference between the 11 and the 5 was enough to suddenly make Indiana lose.

9

Couldn't hurt

Wonder if they were playing tOSU if he’d be out.

Never imagined I see the day when the B1G tippled the scale for…..Indiana

They very clearly showed them that and then left us at the 5 anyway

17

u/GP_ADD Alabama • Mississippi State 21d ago

“Yeah guys, I can see the foot on the white but are we sure that the white is actually out of bounds?”

I don’t think it would have changed all that much and may have just given yall more room to run down the clock, but man that was just odd lol

4

u/The-Best-Snail Indiana Hoosiers • Cornell Big Red 21d ago

I said in the game thread I would have preferred the 11 for that exact reason

138

u/ranrow Texas Longhorns 21d ago

It looked to me like the tv copy showed us that shot before the timeout, then nothing during the timeout, then after the call they showed us the original shot.

I could be wrong but that’s how it looked on tv

177

u/ultimate_placeholder Louisville Cardinals • Keg of Nails 21d ago

Every conference should do what the ACC does and show the entire replay review process, audio and all, live on the broadcast.

135

u/The-Best-Snail Indiana Hoosiers • Cornell Big Red 21d ago

B1G said they were doing it for Friday night games this year, then Michigan-WMU happened and they said every game, and then tonight they gave us a GoPro at the back of the replay center and only audio from the ref

55

u/FloatCopper Indiana • Michigan Tech 21d ago

The B1G must have hired the people who weren't competent enough to keep their jobs with the NCAA.

Are we doing late-game replay controversies again? So hot right now.

7

u/Imthemayor Auburn Tigers 21d ago

This is why they should use only illegal pirate re-streams for replays

It's the only way to know they're neutral

5

u/GargleProtection Notre Dame • Texas Tech 21d ago

This is why you always wear white cleats.

3

u/FloatCopper Indiana • Michigan Tech 21d ago

Must be why Cignetti ripped Nick Marsh in the spring for coming out in gold cleats.

'Sidelines aren't painted gold!'

3

u/BigAcanthocephala637 21d ago

And it was completely unnecessary. IU was carving them up anyway.

1

u/byte4de 21d ago

Nah, it was not clear AT ALL. If it was, the zebra's would have overturned it. The only view that showed his foot on the line was too far away for detail, and another TV angle showed his foot inbounds. Not enough proof to overturn.

9

u/777XSuperHornet Oregon Ducks 21d ago

The other tv angle didn't show him inbounds, THAT one was from a bad angle and would make it inconclusive. The one down the sideline showed white shoe on white paint. There's NOTHING inconclusive about that. If he was inbounds there'd be green between the shoe and paint.

87

u/love_that_fishing Texas Longhorns 21d ago

Generally they look for a smidge of green. There was none.

8

u/Shot_Representative2 Tennessee Volunteers 21d ago

As a Baltimore Ravens fan, I take issue with this for sure. Ball shoulda been on the 12 or 11.

-27

u/byte4de 21d ago

You saw ONE angle where there was none, there was another where there was. Not enough to overturn the call on the field. The Hoosiers will CRUSH the Longhorns this year if they ever meet.

16

u/777XSuperHornet Oregon Ducks 21d ago

Dude shut up and stop defending that atrocious replay review. YOU'RE WRONG.

4

u/CzechHorns Texas Longhorns 21d ago

You forgot to add “THE DUCKS WILL CRUSH THE HOOSIERS THIS YEAR IF THEY MEET”, which is apparently mandatory to write at the end of every message.

74

u/Brokehomiejohn Michigan State Spartans 21d ago

Ya that was egregious, and everyone will forget about it by tomorrow morning

6

B1G refs suck. No lies spotted.

6

u/Sorge74 Ohio State • Bowling Green 21d ago

Yeah if Michigan did it we would never forget but whatever it's Indiana

2

u/Maverick1091 Paper Bag • Florida Gators 21d ago

Haven’t forgotten

6

u/nvm206 21d ago

Just like the dirty late hit on Turbo Richard that took him out of the game and probably longer that wasn’t even called.

8

u/Brokehomiejohn Michigan State Spartans 21d ago

So he was actually injured by a hip drop tackle, which is legal (and shouldnt be). The oline body slamming him out of bounds after didn't injure him (not his leg at least)

1

u/wingerys Indiana Hoosiers 21d ago

I think it’s lame to make it illegal but probably will be eventually.

Too many of those violations are just normal tackles, where it just happens with angle/momentum their hips land on the legs

5

u/GP_ADD Alabama • Mississippi State 21d ago

It needs to be a call only made on review and called down. I don’t trust a ref on the field to be able to call it. But also it happens by accident in college most of the time, NFL players are legit good at how they tackle and would do it on purpose(not to injure, but it seriously is one of the best ways to stop someone) cause for the most part it has disappeared

0

u/shylock10101 21d ago

They would do it to injure. Ask Ty Law.

1

u/GP_ADD Alabama • Mississippi State 21d ago

Okay, that hit was late but that wasn’t what hurt him. It was the initial tackle where dude landed on his ankle. The second hit was just adding insult to injury.

Yeah that's pretty fucking obvious on freeze frame. Dude is blocking the back of his jersey.

1

u/Bixler17 Michigan Wolverines • Michigan Wolverines 21d ago

Doesn't even matter about the back thing, he lined up wide and came down to block. Illegal crackback and that's why the LB wasn't even looking that way.

7

u/ranrow Texas Longhorns 21d ago

Whoa, how is this not more popular?’

2

u/MySabonerRunsOladipo Indiana Hoosiers • Billable Hours 21d ago

Because it isn't actually a thing. You can watch the play here.

The freeze frame makes it look like a crack back block which requires actual force, but in reality, he just sort of bumps into him and the defender is barely effected. You can also live the initial contact is made shoulder-to-shoulder so it isn't a block in the back.

u/StepmaniaGod Michigan • Michigan State 21d ago

Maybe the broadcast view wasnt synced with the actual view

u/ecolovedavid Northwestern Wildcats 21d ago

Idk but between that and the soft (but accurate) face mask it's a hard pill to swallow.

Indiana prob did enough to win regardless, but man I just don't see how him stepping out is inconclusive.

6

u/IThoughtThisWasVoat Nebraska Cornhuskers 21d ago

Classic 5 yard facemask. Bring it back.

1

u/__Big_Hat_Logan__ Alabama Crimson Tide 21d ago

This. So dumb they got rid of it

23

u/ranrow Texas Longhorns 21d ago

There were other soft calls that didn’t go your way. It was probably an honest call, but when they make soft calls that makes it hard to swallow.

6

u/ecolovedavid Northwestern Wildcats 21d ago

Truth. And I do agree with the face mask as much as it felt BS.

I'm much more pissed about the out at the 11, even though it's completely unclear how much of a difference that would have made.

5

u/beartato327 Georgia Bulldogs • Nebraska Cornhuskers 21d ago

Yeah I think facemasks could change into a 2 tier penalty, the facemask tonight was ball carrier dipped to avoid tackle and the hands caught his cage and the D player let go once he realized and then completed the tackle. That just just be a 5 yard penalty in my opinion. The I yoinked that ficker down to the ground and ripped his head off should be today's rule

3

u/ecolovedavid Northwestern Wildcats 21d ago

I went into tonight agreeing with the 15 yard only variant but the incidental may have value as you point out.

I do think the biggest problem is college refs aren't really good enough to trust with that subjective call.

NFL refs sure, but these guys miss blatant stuff constantly

3

u/ZeiglerJaguar Northwestern • South Alabama 21d ago

We got a few that went our way tho — the missed late hit, the missed face mask. Seemed to balance out.

2

u/ecolovedavid Northwestern Wildcats 21d ago

Typical big ten garbage tho, the refs missed a bunch of blatant holds early on some big Indiana runs. I'm not blaming the refs to be clear, both teams suffered. I do hate the our of bounds review, but otherwise agree neither team really benefitted.

7

u/markusaurelius321 Penn State Nittany Lions 21d ago

Wasn't the call on the field that he made the 5? So it needed to be conclusive to over turn. I did absolutely think he was out though. Maybe they had a closer view, not sure why they didnt show it. There were soft face mask calls on IU as well and missed out of bounds late hits so I think shitty reffing equaled out.

5

u/mulder00 Michigan Wolverines • The Game 21d ago

What's the use of replay if they can't find "conclusive" evidence?

1

u/markusaurelius321 Penn State Nittany Lions 21d ago

That's how replay works. Refs call on the field is important and sets the requirement for the replay. Replay either overturns the call because the proof is conclusive, or the replay is not conclusive so the refs call stands.  There are plenty of times when a replay does not show the evidence (think goal line stand and there are 5 linemen between the video and the spot) so there is nothing conclusive to overturn the call.

4

u/Milton__Obote LSU Tigers • Northwestern Wildcats 21d ago

He had his fingers in there even if he didn’t twist

5

u/ecolovedavid Northwestern Wildcats 21d ago

I do hate that the standard is different for a stiff arm vs a tackle. Like so often a guy grabs on a stiff arm and no call, but then a lil grab and it's called. Regardless they did miss a much more blatant one just before so I guess I shouldn't complain.

The out of the 11 was the worst

3

u/Mark_is_on_his_droid Indiana Hoosiers 21d ago

I need to watch again, but was pretty convinced they missed a few other facemask calls before that.

2

u/ecolovedavid Northwestern Wildcats 21d ago

Typical big ten garbage tho, the refs missed a bunch of blatant holds early on some big Indiana runs. I'm not blaming the refs to be clear, both teams suffered.

Some phantom calls, some soft, some missed. For both teams.

Even tho I'm not convinced it would have made a difference I'm more pissed about the out of bounds at the 11 miss.

-1

u/byte4de 21d ago

You saw what you wanted to see. The refs saw something different, and there was conflicting TV angles to overturn the call. NW played AWESOME (other than the late out of bounds hit on Turbo in the 1st half) and outcoached Cig in the 2nd half. I think they'll make some noise this year.

I am so confused I started wondering if I had starting using some sort of narcotics that I am u aware of

6

u/EdselFordEdsel Indiana • Northern Illinois 21d ago

To be fair, I think he stepped out at the 11

4

u/Pedro_Moona Weber State Wildcats 21d ago

It's like the replay booth, fix and chooses when to believe their eyes? You gotta realize there's already an angle from the camera. If that shoe shapes into the line, it's physically impossible he's not out of bounds.

3

u/TerrifiedAndAroused Michigan Wolverines 21d ago

The replay booth is flawless and unimpeachable! We must blindly obey whatever ruling they come to

u/jf3l Indiana • Indiana State 21d ago

Every one of us in the stands wrre shocked they didn’t move it back

2

u/Ihateloops Ohio State • Kent State 21d ago

If they put Indiana at the 12 then they have enough space to run a few plays, get a first down, then score, then Northwestern gets the ball with barely any time left

2

u/Successful_Shoe_Thro 21d ago

The commentary was awful… you could tell who Fox and the money was pulling for. Wild to say for Indiana football

1

u/Kegsocka6 Michigan Wolverines 21d ago

1st and 10 from the 12 is arguably better than 1st and goal from the 5 though

1

u/ranrow Texas Longhorns 21d ago

Totally depends but then it got compounded by PI on an uncatchable ball

1

u/Soccerfun101 Yale Bulldogs • Indiana Hoosiers 21d ago

I was at the game. They showed it on the Jumbotron and it was pretty clearly on the 12. Just would have given IU more opportunity to burn clock probably

1

u/ranrow Texas Longhorns 21d ago

Possibly, it’s hard to say which is better. You’ll take first and goal from the 9 over 1st and 10 from the 12; but the 5 is much tougher. I don’t know why everyone is saying that’s better for northwestern, 5 yards on 4 downs is hard for any defense to stop

1

u/Mark_is_on_his_droid Indiana Hoosiers 21d ago

If it matters, everyone in the stands was confused too. We thought he was out at the 11/12.

The only thing that made sense to me is theoretically Northwestern benefited from us having 1st and Goal instead of 1st and 10 from the 11, and therefore more opportunities to run the clock.

1

u/FloatCopper Indiana • Michigan Tech 21d ago

On some important plays the last couple seasons I've seen green between foot and line and they call us out.

Here we clearly were out, and yet they call us in. Inconclusive was the reason I guess. Looked out...

1

u/GirthdayBoy Michigan Wolverines 21d ago

RIIIIGHT? Are we using the same squad that officiated us and WMU?

1

u/nicholus_h2 Michigan Wolverines 21d ago

can we finally drop the Michigan second conspiracies and get on the conspiracy train for Big Ten's clear darling, Indiana?

wait...Indiana... what?

1

u/Spiritual-Ad8062 Indiana Hoosiers 21d ago

How did they not call a PI on a dirty out of bounds play against IU’s starting running back (Turbo Richards)?

The refs sucked in this game. They blew a LOT of calls.

NW has my respect. That’s a good football team.

0

u/byte4de 21d ago

It wasn't clear at all, you just saw what you wanted to see.

1

u/ranrow Texas Longhorns 21d ago

It was absolutely clear, try again.

I don’t want to see anything, in fact an undefeated but over ranked Indiana is better for me when Ohio state beats the brakes off of them

-1

u/ngerb_5 Indiana Hoosiers • Old Oaken Bucket 21d ago

That should have worked in Northwesterns favor but they ended allowing Indiana to chew clock

-11

u/TURRRDS Indiana Hoosiers 21d ago

That kind of helps Northwestern though. 1st and 10 at the 12, IU can run more plays and more time off than they can if it's 1st and goal at the 5. NU needed more time than anything else.

1

u/Mammoth_Impress_3108 Nebraska • Kansas State 21d ago

That's only assuming IU gets to the 2 for the first down without a touchdown. IDK how likely that is.
