The more things change, the more they stay the same

You know when you get dumped, but after you grieve the breakup you realize how there were things about the person not as great as you remembered? That’s the experience here.

He was great here, but not the flawless legend some like to make him out to be. Our standards beforehand were just massively low and he deserves credit for finally getting us out of that basement.

We have....mixxed feelings about him leaving. He is a good hire, but not a game changing hire.

He was good for Iowa State, where he could chill, get a bowl every year, and get into the Big XII once or twice a decade and still be very far from the hot seat. Even in the great years, he had mind-fucking losses or almost losses (almost Drake 2018, almost UNI 2019, ULL 2020, TTU/WVU and almost UNI 2021, KU 2024, CU 2025), so while he can get you a nice upset (snowbowl KSU, '21 Okie St, '20 OU, '19 Texas, '18 Okie St/WVU, '17 TCU/OU), he's just as likely to give it back the other way

He was a good hire for us, but he's a slightly worse Franklin at best, which is not what you guys want lol

Your 2 sentences imply very different expectations. We absolutely loved what he did for us. We were historically awful so someone that could get consistent bowl games and sniff a couple conference championships was easily the best coach we've ever had by a wide margin. He was in no way a good hire for a program with conference championship expectations and deep playoff run or championship aspirations.

Franklin came up short in some of his biggest games with Penn State. Campbell was embarrassed in almost every big game with ISU.

Tbf the last paragraph is a stretch considering Franklin is 4-24 in Top 10 games.

So Franklin came up short in nearly all his big games to a historically bad level.

Regardless this loss reminded me of 2018 MSU, just fucking around and letting a worse team backdoor you on a long TD. Terrible football

You guys don’t need a good hire. You needed a great hire.

A good coach for Iowa State does not mean a good hire for Penn State
