Phil Longo gotta be on the hot seat Jesus Christ he’s terrible, but at least Western Kentucky got a win after this game I can see them going 6-6 or 7-5

I still wonder how he got a HC job anywhere in FBS after getting fired as a coordinator.

u/Mother_Frame6669 2d ago
He was OC at Sam 2014-'16, his offense led I-AA averaging 547 ypg in '16, so the answer is previous ties to the program.

u/Molson2871 Wisconsin Badgers 2d ago
I did know his history with the school but ask any fan of Wisconsin, UNC, or Ole Miss if they thought he was HC material and you'd get a roaring LOL

Coaching football is one of the few jobs where you can fail upwards.

He was so horrendous as the Ole Miss offensive coordinator. Absolute malpractice and I’m still bitter about it nearly a decade later. We managed to go 5-7 in 2018 with this offensive roster and be held to 16 points or fewer (twice it was 7 or fewer) in SEC play
QB: Jordan Ta’amu - Bounced around on NFL squads for a few years and has been a UFL MVP.
RB: Scottie Phillips - Spent a couple years in the NFL
WR: 2nd round picks AJ Brown, DK Metcalf, and Elijah Moore
TE: Dawson Knox (3rd round pick who did not have a single career touchdown while at Ole Miss)
OL: Three guys who went on to get drafted and one more who was a projected late round pick prior to an injury that went undrafted but still spent about 4/5 years in the NFL

A win is a win!
This game was peak midweek CUSA football. A punt-off of our times.
Let‘s go back to that bowl in New Orleans for the third time in five years perhaps. Go Tops!

I mean, WKU got the win, but only beating SHSU by 13 points (and in a not very inspiring way) is not a great sign of hope for the rest of their season.

Eh, Tulsa only beat the Bearkats by 6 and Troy only beat them by 3. Teams will carry on

Meanwhile, their bitter rival MTSU somehow beats C-USA favorite Delaware (after losing to Jax State and Kansas in weeks prior) and currently runs with 50/50 win rate
The 100 Miles of Hate may very well have a new winner this season

Delaware isn't a favorite after they lost their QB to injury unfortunately

Sam Houston players have quit on Phil Longo. He's cooked
8
u/Mother_Frame6669 2d ago
Defense gave up 276 yards total offense and 16 points
That is the opposite of quitting
Their offense is piss-poor because their OL is garbage. They need to fix the OL.

Not trying to be an ass, but how did sam houston move up to FBS?

Because there once was a time that we saw consistent success on the football field, when our AD told our national championship winning coach that the university would not pay him after a 10 win season and bowl victory in our second FBS season, kind of kicked our program back a few years
Then we hired someone who has been fired from every job he’s ever had to lead our football team. University higher ups don’t give a fuck and this is what we’re left with11

They were good before their longtime head coach left for Temple, and they replaced him with Phil Longo.

The real genesis of this is there are several teachers colleges in Texas (Sam Houston State, Southwest Texas State, North Texas State) that all sought to increase their national appeal and academic standing by changing their names to Sam Houston, Texas State, University of North Texas. One by one, they all moved up from the I-AA levels to the I-A level. They're all in something of a cold war rivalry with each other, and all refuse to drop back down to the I-AA level because it would mean a loss of prestige compared to the other two programs.

North Texas is certainly lapping the others recently

And the Texas State System includes Texas State and Sam Houston State (as well as Lamar and Sul Ross). UNT left this system and now has its own. Other schools got pulled into the orbits of the bigger systems in Texas.

UNT hasn’t set the world on fire until recently, but we’ve been in I-A/FBS since the ‘95 season. That’s 12 years before TX State and 26 years before SHSU. I’m not sure what “Cold War” is going on. Around ‘05-‘13, when I was there, I don’t recall any attention paid to TX State or Sam.

u/Bobcat2013 Texas State Bobcats 1d ago
Lmao what?? First of Sam Houston State is still Sam Houston State. 2nd of all theres no "cold war". No one really thinks of SHSU.

Didn't you hear? They won an FCS championship during the Covid spring season when nobody was really trying.
That's literally the only real justification

My WKU attending friend was complaining about them running the ball ineffective lol and I made the joke when she said the score was 13-3 that I had the rest of the game script and SHSU would get a scoop and score and the game would end 13-10

u/Mother_Frame6669 2d ago
Bearkats offense is ass, my dude
Good news for Sam is their rushing defense looked better after getting mollywhopped by Liberty last week
144 yards at 3.3 ypc is a huge improvement over 297 at 7.6 ypc

I think at a place like Sam Houston, it’s going to depend how much his buyout decreases at a certain date. Couldn’t find numbers so assuming it’s 2.8-4mil buyout at the moment.
