This whole thing is so dumb

We should organize a boycott of the sport over this.

But, we won't. And, that's on us.

The only boycott I’ve seen work was Bud Light and it was for a stupid reason

24

u/ScotsBeowulf Auburn Tigers • Bacardi Bowl 10h ago

I've been boycotting Bud Light for over 20 years, and it's been great for me.

It would take a lot to get me to switch from Miller Lite

Didn't the boycott push people to drink Modelo, a Budweiser brand beer?

Not in the US, but elsewhere

3

u/Alternative-Ease-702 Boise State Broncos 15h ago

Yeah it became the No1 beer afterwards

Probably

Bud Light boycott worked because Bud Light is easily replaceable for the people who drink it.

College football is not easily replaceable.

Funniest part is most of them simply switched to a different InBev beer anyway

I'd argue it is. Plenty of other sport and a far better product on Sundays.

Yes. Still a dumb reason

ABC brought Jimmy Kimmel back after a bunch of people canceled their Disney+ when they suspended him after his Charlie Kirk joke. Can’t be anything too high stakes though

u/Individual-Motor-167 6h ago

Didn't actually work, media pretended it did.

RE: everything in life since 2020 2016

Life hasn't been the same since about when Harambe died (not kidding)

I promise you that it’s possible. I used to structure my Saturday around college football and since we got relegated I basically just watch Wazzu.

This is the slow death of the sport

I do the same, used to be a season ticket holder, now with hazing enabler Pat Fitz in charge, I don't really even care to watch the Spartans

The next generation is gonna be full of people with parents like us who just didn't care, and then they won't care

So it's gonna grow or stay steady for now, but over the next decade it's just gonna fade

4

u/kcknuckles Notre Dame • Nebraska 6h ago

Yeah, this is something people aren't really grasping. When I was a kid, I followed college football so closely because my parents did, and it was really fun. Now, I'm rapidly losing interest with the conference realignment, unchecked NIL, erosion of regional rivalries, playoff-or-bust fixation, less importance on bowl games, 4-hour games with commercial breaks after every snap, CTE, constant gambling pushes from ads and talking heads, and, of course, the loss of the Carquest Bowl.

u/HotdawgSizzle Georgia Bulldogs 17h ago

They are going to make so much money off of this and everyone will still watch.

Sadly probably me included

Hold off on that. I want to see this season play out for us.

Idk if it's a boycott, but I'm done, personally.

To us who are not benefiting from it for sure. NCAA has monetized college sports with media and various industries such as gambling. There's lots of money to be made, even more if you have $$ to invest...

At least athletes got something this time.

Yes, let's keep mentioning the NCAA, which has nothing to do with any of these decisions, and is literally just a body created by the schools. It's the garsh darn NCAA at it again!!1!1

u/LessThanCleverName Salad Bowl • Sickos 19h ago edited 19h ago

Seriously, the NCAA can’t hardly do shit anymore. Blame the conferences and the schools.

Edit - now that I think about it, OP is probably using NCAA as a catch-all for college sports, but still, it’s not them doing this. Their responsibility lies entirely in their stubborn inability to adapt to a super obviously changing landscape in college sports and getting caught with no clothes.

7

u/StrawberryWaste9040 Iowa State Cyclones 19h ago

Well NCAA is still association of all schools (or conferences), but in reality SEC and Big 10 schools have more influence than other conferences. And rest have to accept the scraps given to them.

5

u/LessThanCleverName Salad Bowl • Sickos 18h ago

Yeah, I realized after you were just using the NCAA as a collective term. But it’s pretty much just those two calling the shots at this point.

1

u/No-Luck4052 19h ago

It seems like they do little more than come up with the rules, which is what they were originally created for. They’ve gone almost full circle.

u/one-hour-photo Tennessee • South Carolina 9h ago

the NCAA is the one thing that actually COULD have helped prevent this. our government just hates the shit out of associations, and the NCAA concurrently has sucked at governing.

u/Effective-LineP00 20h ago

I mean sort of, It's kind of Ironic they are getting the playoffs expanded and the students are getting their salary capped at the same time.

There's lots of money to be made,

Is there though?

Just accounting for the CCGs, we're already down to only $155M net.

Haven't heard anyone talk about the loss of bowl games, but the likes of the Citrus Bowl, Pinstripe Bowl, and the Pop-Tarts Bowl pull good numbers and are worth a pretty penny.

And then the games down the stretch in the regular season are gonna lose some luster. Have to imagine an OSU/Michigan with no stakes outside the rivalry won't draw the national attention it would in years past.

u/SquirrelWarSurvivor Oklahoma • Illinois 19h ago

> Have to imagine an OSU/Michigan with no stakes outside the rivalry won’t draw the national attention it would in years past.

Early October is a great time for the biggest rivalry game of the season. And it still seems to draw large enough ratings to be the first or second game selected in the annual TV draw.

7

u/Jonny_Qball Michigan Wolverines • Missouri Tigers 8h ago

Nah fuck that. The Game is on the last weekend of the regular season. I’m tired of fucking with tradition.

It’s been the most viewed regular season game of 6 of the last 10 years for a reason - part of what makes it the best rivalry in football is that every season the stakes feel so damn high. You lose a bit of that by moving it to early October.

u/Dippa99 Georgia Bulldogs 17h ago

Yes, or it wouldn't be happening. I can't speak to the bowls or games you're talking about, but if it was a losing proposition for those making these decisions, it wouldn't happen.

It may lose some other entities money I suppose

3

u/one-hour-photo Tennessee • South Carolina 9h ago

it's the money to be made by the people who hold the reins. they are actively trying to pull the money from the other entities.

It would be like if Elon musk set up a 64 team basketball playoff that paid the players directly, more than anyone else could.

1

u/Pinewood74 Air Force Falcons • Purdue Boilermakers 8h ago

Right, so we're talking about a definition of "lots" here.

And from what I'm seeing, this isn't lots. When the Big Ten is already paying out 75M+ per school, squeezing out another $2M~$4M per school depending on the splits between the conferences isn't very much to me.

These folks are not infallible. And they're having to project thingd here. And I look at things like last week's USC/PSU tv rating and I think they've scuffed the projections. LSU vs UK was another way. Game was absolutely forgotten. And those are the types of matchups that we'll be getting for the opening rounds of the playoffs.

16

u/muttonchops215 Ohio State Buckeyes • Iowa Hawkeyes 18h ago

Blaming the NCAA is pushing over a quadriplegic in a wheelchair and declaring yourself tough. They've been handcuffed for a long time. Despite their shortcomings, they can't do anything. This has been evident for quite some time. See: the cheaters that cheated and fought the NCAA for minimal punishment, to those that abided by the rules and got hammered for their honesty (The NCAA lacks subpoena / investigative power, with rules that don't punish members that resist investigations).

Not only are we not benefitting from it, we are having our revenue extracted for it lol. Oh wow they can extract all the capital? Great

At least athletes got something this time.

They've priced in the overhead of paying the slaves on the books, and have determined it doesn't cut into the Epstein Class's profits too much

ESPN is making it a 24 team playoff now. And conference championship games are gone because of it and I think regular bowl games dead too

I always thought it was too corporate. The decrease in power of the bowl admins is a good thing imo, not that ESPN having sole control of the CFP is a good thing
