Comedian Joel McHale’s flight was canceled, so he took a nearly 6-hour Uber ride from Rochester, NY, to NYC to make his appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. He paid $692 for the ride, tipped the driver $200, and covered his gas costs.

In this economy, $200 would not be enough for me to want to drive 12 hours 🤣

This was eight years ago. It comes out to about $40-$50 an hour.

Love seeing the broke ass minimum wage earners in here shitting on this guy for making the wage equivalent of 90k a year.

Right? I don’t understand why people have to try and make everything negative or offset it. This was eight years ago. Before Covid, so the money was a little better than today. He got about 300 from Uber, the guy paid his gas which is about $50-$75 and tipped them 200. That’s close to $600. That’s not bad at all.

people are conditioned by TV to think the "well awksully..." person is the smarter person because main characters do it so often. So now everyone on the internet wants to be the "well awksully" person unironically.

I wasn’t shitting on it. I wouldn’t want to be in the car that long for that amount. I wasn’t trying to disrespect anyone. I was just like damn that’s a long car ride for $200. There’s lots of jobs I don’t want to do myself that I respect people for doing. I’m not even saying he should have paid more but I hate long car rides like that. Sorry for sharing an opinion 🤷‍♀️

$200 plus gas one time isn't $90k a year, because he's not making this trip every day. He's making $40k with an additional $200 and gas

You don't know how to fucking read

Which part? You don't know what a salary is because you've never been given one in real life, reddit mod. See if you can take some time to figure out what "equivalent" means

shitting on this guy for making the wage equivalent of 90k a year.

and picking up a quarter is the wage equivalent of 900k/year. There is a reason you don't use a one off gig work to extrapolate wage equivalence.

Only if you go for a straight rate and not overtime, which my math has it closer to $30-$40/hr standard rate

Do Uber drivers even have overtime? And if they do, why would they get paid LESS?

1

u/boforbojack 11h ago

They don’t, my point is in a normal job, they’d get 4hrs of overtime at 1.5X standard wage. So the base rate would need to be lower. I’m drawing the comparison to a normal job to show it’s a shit pay in standard terms

Oh gotcha. But even so $30+ is both better the median US wage and better than the average long haul trucker.

Salary doesn't get overtime, I think the rule is if you see a computer you get no overtime.

I think the rule was made by some dumb fuck politicians because they couldn't measure ACTUAL work or something.

good thing you're not a cab driver, ya know like the actual cab driver lol. If he got him at the beginning of his shift then that would have been an awesome day

No way I would've picked up a ride like this 8 years ago. Bonuses were per ride. You wouldn't be able to hit your backloaded bonuses doing this. Half this time you're driving back on unfamiliar roads making no money.

You'd make more just driving locally in a big city, with more freedom for breaks while driving in familiar territory. I turned down any rides over 2 hours long, frequently any rides over 45 minutes depending on traffic.

You just need to pick up another fare going back to Rochester, no big deal
