discussion why a bitch gotta lie is so cathartic

• Upvotes

this isn't a song asking you to calm down or explain yourself. it's the raw and ugly part of anger you get before you can even explain yourself or get even more pissed at just the THOUGHT of having to do that because you know no one else would understand. everything in my line of sight is something to be angry at and it doesn't matter what it is, such a confrontational and unstable feeling. it's before your thoughts are organized and everything replays. i love the robotic voice in that song because it's like your voice of reason but it's barely there and you can't understand it. the glitchiness, the abrasiveness is right where i wanna be when im upset. i wanna be sat with not consoled or comforted, "make it understandable, become calm enough to deal with," that's all it is to me

i've included as many albums, EPs, singles, unreleased projects, and remixes that i could find that were all made directly by Zach, Ride and Andy (although i've probably missed a few)

if you have any questions about the chart, let me know! :)

question Interview 2016 or Fashion Week?

Which instrumental DG project do you personally think is better? To me, it's gotta be interview 2016, it's just so much more consistent to me than FW. FW does do a few good tracks right like Runway D, Runway J, Runway E (2), Runway H, Runway n (3), and Runway E (3). FW is just a lot more laid back and minimal in a sense than interview 2016, i feel? and interview 2016 pretty much does almost every song perfectly in my eyes

but i'd be really curious to see what everyone else thinks??

discussion What is the most underrated song on each album?

Death Grips has A LOT of underrated tracks. In my opinion, some of their underrated tracks are actually some of the best on that specific album. Here is my ranking:

Exmilitary: Unequivocally Thru the Walls. This is a top 10 Death Grips song for me. Can't even properly descirbe how hard this song fucks. The unconventional song structure, the endless chaos, the airhorn, the ending. It is so amazing.

Second place is probably Known for It. The background synth/guitar(?) sound during the verses is unreal. Not to mention how cool the songs sample is.

The Money Store: It is The Cage. My god, the chorus and the first verse are so good. Also I love the part near the end where is says "Yeah I got that man fo' sho, but tell em' why you had to get em' though."

Second is Bitch Please. The drop at the beginning. The sample. It is beautiful.

No Love Deep Web: This one is hard. I can't choose between Stockton or Deep Web.

The bass on Stockton could impregnate me (im wildin?). And I need to mention the lyric "...hid like Laden, been through shit like Sodom." Just a personal favorite of mine.

Deep Web has so many good lyrics: "Let flock of sheep get shaved off, lynched by their halos." and "hate myself more than you ever could." And those synths are just killing shit in the back the whole song.

Government Plates: This one is difficult, but I think I gotta go with the title track. It sounds like a futurisic city/dystopia. Or like hacking into the mainframe type shit. I love it. And the instrumental during the "Government plates, on location, I'm a corporation, fuck location" part is great.

I'm kinda indifferent on second place. Maybe Feels Like a Wheel? I love how the song comes in.

NOTM: It is Black Quarterback. Finally another top Death Grips song contender on this ranking. No joke, I legitimately cried when I first heard this song. The way the Bjork vocals come in at the beginning gave me such intense full body chills that actually hurt. It was a wild experience. And I'm gonna quote "COMFORT OVER FREEDOM PAVE A PATH OF LEISURE HAVE IT ALL..." on something, I swear.

Second is Have a Sad Cum BB. I remember having this song on loop for hours when I was working one shift awhile back, lol. But honestly it is a very beautiful song.

Jenny Death: Hear me out... its Pss Pss. It enlightened me. The beat sounds like some goopy jelly or a rubber band. It is so fucking enamoring. Some of rides most unsettling and soft vocals to date. Also, love the sad cum shoutout.

Second is Beyond Alive. Yes, unironically I like this song less than Pss Pss. But still, when the guitar comes in, followed by "Frightened people, you know who you are." It is so good. I am honeslty surprised this song has as low as plays as it does. I would expect it to be one of the more popular songs on JD.

Bottomless Pit: Ring a bell, obviously. Whatever girl Ride is talking about on this song got absolutely cooked. These lyrics are brutal. "Ain't gonna make it though, try your luck in porn..." just to name one.

Second is Trash. Perfect depiction of the current (and to an even worse extent, the future) state of the internet. Ai slop, greed, bot traffic.

Year of the Snitch: It has gotta be The Fear. The "I feel so sick today... I'm afraid to be here with you" part is literally one of the best moments on the album hands down. The record scratches are so nasty.

Second is probably Disappointed; the emotional intensity of that song has helped me in some of my darkest times.

Cant believe I wrote all this. 🫩

discussion Death Grips Album Ranking?

I know we are all waiting for the new DG Album, so out of curiosity how would yall rank Death Grips Disco. I can’t even rank them honestly so it’ll be hard. I know people probably done this already but I just wanna fit in lol I’m pretty new here on the Reddit. This is going to be a tough ranking but I’ll try:

  1. Exmilitary ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This album still blows my mind every time I listen to it bro… I mean tracks like Culture Shock. I Want It I Need It. Guillotine. Spread Eagle Cross The Block. Lord of the Game. I mean the whole album is fucking phenomenal. Very innovative and the fact that’s their debut just shows how amazing they really are man. Beware “to pray is to accept defeat” is one of my favorite lines I’ve heard from MC Ride. Great fucking album.

  1. Bottomless Pit. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I feel the same with this album with Exmilitary. It was tough between these 2 but Exmilitary is just so nostalgic. What I love about this album is that this album has such a variety. All songs doesn’t sound the same. DG does that alot with their work but, Three Bedrooms in a Good Neighborhood, Giving Bad People Good Ideas, Bubbles Buried in this Jungle are some unbelievable incredible songs. This is also another great fucking LP infact ironically every song is my favorite. I don’t dislike any song. The most listen songs I listen to on this record is Warping, 80808, and Houdini.

  1. The Powers That B ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The top 3 was so fucking tough bro but fuck it man. This whole album is great. NOTM has Up My Sleeves, Billy Not Really, Black Quarterback, Fuck Me Out. Those are my favorite records on this one. I love how choppy this record is and one of the most unique pieces in their discography. But Jenny Death… oh boi. On GP, Centuries of Damn, Inanimate Sensation, I Break Mirrors with My Face, and Why a Bitch Gotta Lie. BANGERS! The top 3 ranking was so hard cuz these albums are undeniably great in its own way but Jenny death and NOtm are just bizarre and I love how open MC Ride is man.

  1. The Money Store ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Alright this would’ve been top 3 if it wasn’t for the powers that b. Now honestly there’s a lot of bangers on this one man. The Cage, Hustle Bones, Double Helix, Punk Weight, Hacker undeniably great tracks. I feel this is the most party and crunked album they even have. Any song you play in this jawn is gonna make you wanna go crazy. This album is great. Love it.

  1. Year of the Snitch ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

First of all, I love this record and I just wanted to say that like the reason it’s still top 5 it’s because I love how laid back it is but because how short the album is I just really think that DG tried something new and they succeeded with that. It doesn’t feel rushed at all. Its very different then a lot of their work. I mean they still have aggressive tracks like shitshow and black paint. But some of the tracks you could literally part too 😂 streaky is one of my favorite tracks from this record. And I literally dance to it all the time. Flies is very underrated and unique. This whole album is very unique but to me i feel like they’re better DG Albums better so sorry.

  1. No Love Deep Web ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is the first record I was really interested in listening to DG for the first time and this album is super minimalistic and simple yet so jarring and hard hitting. The only downside of this record is that some song gets repetitive at times which isn’t a big deal cause it’s still catchy. For example, Stockton “IM BOUNCING WHOOP!” That line is hard but it gets to a point. Also in whammy. I wish there was more lyrics he put into it although the beat is insane bruv. But this record is very good don’t get me wrong. I like this one. Even though it’s low it’s still a good record but I’m sorry😔

  1. Government Plates. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

This album has its high and lows. They’re a couple of good tracks like Anne Bonny, You Might Think, and Fuck Who’s watching. But same problem with NLDW, it’s very repetitive sometimes and it gets to a point. Now they’re some fucking cool ass beats on this but man… I wish they used some variety but again cool record.

Yea I know I left out EPs but I’m just talking about their albums. What yall feel about my tier list tho? Anyways, stay noided!👌🏾

discussion What song would you like them to have made it differently? big or small

I've recently re-listened to TPTB.

Black quarterback COULD have been one of their greatest songs ever. Like On GP level. It has incredible verses from ride in the beginning (both in meaning and lyrically) and incredible production and sampling thanks to zach and bjork respectively and all that gets wasted on "I'm so black quarteback air it out albino" for 20 morel lines. To me it feels like a pretty big missed opportunity.

What's your version of this take?

discussion My Death Grips ranking + thoughts on upcoming album

I'm pretty ecstatic that Death Grips is working on some new stuff, especially after an eight year wait. It seems the band only gets better over time, with Bottomless Pit And Year Of The Snitch both being 10/10s for me, and with nearly a decade to cook, I have very high hopes for this next album. I have a feeling this might be our last act, so I'm hoping it lives up to all of our expectations. (Although, I was actually completely fine with Year Of The Snitch being the final Death Grips album, y'know, since it's my favorite and whatnot). Hopefully re-listening to their discography will make the album release sooner, but honestly, if they need another year or even more I'm completely fine with that. I don't want the album to come out as soon as possible, I want it to be as good as possible.

And, as promised, here is my ranking:

  1. Year of the Snitch
  2. The Money Store
  3. Bottomless Pit
  4. Death Grips (EP)
  5. Exmilitary
  6. NotM
  7. Jenny Death
  8. Government Plates
  9. No Love Deep Web
  10. Steroids
  11. Fashion Week
  12. Interview 2016

discussion Fav Moment of Each Album?

Exmil - Second verse on Klink (hm to the intro of Beware though obviously + Takyon’s hook and some of the shouts on Spread Eagle)

TMS - System Blower beat drop

NLDW - No Love chorus

GP - Verses on Anne Bonny

NOTM - Intro of Black Quarterback

JD - Though I consider Turned Off to be their greatest song overall, nothing beats the chorus of Beyond Alive. The second verse of Inanimate Sensation is also ridiculous but no cigar.

BP - Probably that e guitar riff on the opener, if not the Three Bedrooms instrumental just ripping immediately

YOTS - The eargasmic guitar lick on Hahaha. Not sure if anyone played Skylanders as a kid but that song always makes me picture Monster Marsh lmaooo

discussion what song do you connect (personally, sentimentally) the most to?

To me i'd say i hold these songs very close to me: Up My Sleeves, Black Body (steroids), Fyrd Up, Anne Bonny, Big Dipper, On GP. However i somehow don't feel so connected to it.

Some for the frustration they convey and the delivery, i really wish we had more like Fyrd Up in that same style i mean, melodically it feels very dark and lyrically to me it's up there with On GP but i wouldn't say it's the exact same just....similar. Either way, to me Up My Sleeves is what takes me somewhere else entirely and Black Body completes that feeling.

What about you?

discussion NOTM > Jenny Death

Yes i like notm more than jenny death. Just feels like one big extremely enjoyable song. Jenny death is also a ten dont get me wronf i mean it has On Gp for gods sake. But idk how to explain it Notm is just really enjoyable and interesting for some reason.
