APPROVED B-LISTERS A 2018 email from publicist Peggy Siegal to Jeffrey Epstein references Timothée Chalamet. Discussing Woody Allen’s film starring Chalamet, Siegal says he was “forced by the press and his agents” to donate his salary.

This is a really beloved + iconic joke from the late great Mitch Hedberg, if you need a laugh I cannot more highly recommend his standup! It is refreshingly offbeat and “simple” (eg. about stuff like The DoubleTree Inn and getting a receipt for a donut).
Mitch All Together is a classic.

What about this makes him bad though? I’m not sure I understand. He gave his salary away for the film because it was tainted at a level of public knowledge because of the film being associated with Woody Allen. Him being forced to do it or not doesn’t put him in a circle with Woody Allen…

But those are all secondhand characterizations by people trying to launder Woody's reputation by imagining a conspiracy to destroy him. Why would assume they know Chalamet's actual intentions, let alone are describing them accurately?
42
u/quadranting Please Abraham, I am not that man Feb 04 '26
Ronan Farrow made his snarky tweet that kind of blew the accusations back into the limelight in 2014 when Woody Allen was getting an honorary Golden Globe. They shot it in 2017. Timothee stood by the film until the backlash was too strong, and then he donated his salary after Rebecca Hall did it first.
35
u/CrackerPanda Nancy Jo, this is Alexis Neiers calling Feb 04 '26
I don’t see anyone here equating his actions to Woody Allen’s or arguing that they’re in the same circle, so not sure where you’re getting that from. People are reasonably responding negatively to the claim that, despite publicly apologizing, Chalamet was not at all sorry about working with a known abuser and was actually only upset about having to donate money and the impact on his Oscar campaign.

I think Oney said something about that kind of thing, where young actors sign a contract and be made to work on a film that they don't want to. I think that's what happened with The Cat in the Hat and actor Mike Myers, where he was forced to do that movie.. I think.
I'm not defending Timothee, just that maybe he was obligated by contract to do that movie.→ More replies (2)73

But also maybe a lot of Hollywood & rich people are just dumb? And they have these same conversations with a bunch people in all kinds of recorded formats because they cant imagine there being consequences and dont know how to shut up?

I don't understand why? I'm not like a fangirl of his but I don't see anything damning in this email. It's a third party who doesn't like the Me Too movement saying that Timothy Chalemet hates being asked about Woody Allen on his press tour (understandable, if my boss was a pedo and people were insinuating that I knew about it, or that by being employed by him I was supporting pedophiles even though I didn't know he was a pedophile when I worked for him, I'd be annoyed too). And I'd be even more annoyed if I felt like I had to give away my salary to charity, I mean I'd do it, but I'd be annoyed, because I'm 22 and that was my big break and now I'm famous and broke which is the worst because now I can't hire security. Like this all seems very logical.

It shouldn't be a shocker to anyone, but a lot of people seem surprised that a rich persons act of kindness was a public relations thing, a political thing, a tax right-off, or any number of things. It's never just about doing what is right.
People that DO do it out of kindness give a sizeable chunk of their wealth to do something good or right.
I know nearly no one is religious these days, and that's fine, but for me, their are quotes or stories in the Bible that do resonate with me as a bit of a life lesson. Almost all of them are from Jesus and the New Testament.
"[Jesus] sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. And he called his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.” (Mark 12:41–44)"That is to say, these rich ***holes will donate a pittance of their wealth and never feel a thing, but poor, working folks will donate half a days pay to do something good.

I just don’t think Chalamet ever deserved it this year (I like Hawke, Dicaprio, and Jordan more), and his tasteless black culture vulture campaign was extremely off putting. Just trying to celebrate the idea that his win isn’t inevitable with a little fun. And if MBJ does win it’s a deserved win.

It's seriously rare nowadays to see someone become a character. Often it's the opposite, the character ends up being heavily influenced by the actor/actress playing him/her.
MBJ really sold his performance in Sinners and stole every scene, he was just so fun to watch. Regardless of what you think of the movie, I feel he deserves credit for that alone.

What were the three political agencies he donated to?

TIME’S UP, which gives legal support to victims of sexual harassment, the LGBT Center in New York, and the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network

Unless I'm misunderstanding, is it still not a net-positive that he donated to these organisations? Even if he had ulterior motives (i.e. getting some good PR out of it), he still did a good thing.
Especially considering the majority of large scale donations to not-for-profits are for reasons other than philanthropy.

From a 2018 article in Vanity Fair: "Timothée Chalamet is the latest actor to publicly distance himself from Woody Allen. The actor, who has been on a whirlwind press-tour stumping for Call Me by Your Name, declared on Tuesday that he is donating his salary from the upcoming Allen film A Rainy Day in New York to three different charities: Time’s Up, RAINN, and the L.G.B.T. Center in New York."

One common thing I’m noticing is just how insufferable these people come across in their email communications.

Wagner Moura/Michael B. Jordan that Oscar is yours!!! (I’m rooting for either)

Michael B Jordan who defended Jonathan Majors for beating the shit out of his girlfriend? I guess it’s fine though because he’s so handsome 🥰. Beating women is WOKE if you do the right movies.

If Wagner brings the first acting Oscar to South America, I think I'll explode with joy!
But Sinners is incredible and MBJ was wonderful in the role of the twins, so I would also be very happy if he won. They both deserve it very much.

Why do grown men (or in this case, I guess Peggy is emailing him, but still! lol) email each other like it's a LiveJournal post. I'm glad the evidence exists but have y'all noticed that? Who puts that much of their personal business in an email?

“For a silver fox, you are in tip top shape”….even if he wasn’t the horrific human he was, that’s not true by a long shot 🤣 he and his friends are all such sycophantic losers I hate it all.

Ew you know, looking at so many young artists and celebrities now... Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, Rachel Zegler, Jenna Ortega... who are all in their early 20s...who have gone through SO MUCH SHIT for daring to have empathy and calling out fascism for what it is. Who try their best to use their platform for good and their voice for good...and then you had 23 year old Timmmy tim tim, privileged white boy, loved by everybody and hailed as an Oscar frontwinner, deciding to just embrace whatever side gets him ahead. Fucking ew.

I totally believe this considering Timothee decided to work with Woody in the first place but also apologized to his sister after publicly denouncing Woody. Timothee's such a phony with no backbone.

I mean wasnt like his dad is like connected to the french media and unicef and his mum went to yale (yale is a bit sussy btw just that you all know). So his parents definitely were wealthy and already had connections. So timothy was always a spoiled rich brat not surprised.

Not to be a defender of Timothe, but this is like triple levels hearsay for us to believe the underlying truth. We’re hearing from an agent, through Peggy, to Epstein, in an email. Pretty hard to take the validity of it seriously unless you just already want to beforehand.

Well, that was whining just for nothing. Famously, Allen only pays his actors according to the Sag Aftra basic tabulator. So, all those actors and actresses that are A+ on his movies could as well do it for free by their standards. They are acting in his movies because of admiration, not money.

Hahahaha poor Timmy had to donate his salary after working with a pedophile and predator director, either be a man about it and stand by your decision to be a scum bag or don’t do it at all. Joke ass actor fr.

Love that she threw in this wasn’t done because Woody is guilty but because of ‘hysterical women’.
