FF VII Re-trilogy played FF7 remake as first timer and… disappointed? should I keep going?

TL;DR- I always wanted to play FF7 and FF10 as a kid but didn’t; just played remake which felt hollow and bad, not sure if I should keep trying or just move on…

ok so let me preface this by saying that, as a kid, I desperately wanted to play the final fantasy games, but parents thought too violent etc…. I would ask to buy them again and again in vain, watch friends and cousins play FF7 and FF10, even read Wikipedia summaries of the plots and characters. They just seemed like exactly the kind of games that would excite me… more complex, adult version of kingdom hearts but with turn based gameplay and no weird Disney fluff.

Cut to adult life when I finally have my own console and the time/desire to play more games. My bf bought me FF7 remake because we’d talked about how I always wanted to try them… and I’m just disappointed?

The plot felt extremely drawn out but also somehow hollow; cutscenes feel stilted; I am sort of bewildered by the story despite having had a pretty good idea of the plot going in; and characters feel extremely 2D. Why is the setting a huge complex futuristic cityscape but I feel like I just ran in circles in a trash heap for 30 hours? The gameplay is fine and good, but I’ve played much better and more creative RPGs (both action and turn based) in the last few years.

Am I missing something here? I’ve white knuckled it all the way to the “crossroads” section of 18 (motorcycles round 2 almost made me end it all…). Now I’m wondering—is this even worth finishing? I definitely don’t feel like trying to get through Rebirth, with apparently even more minigames and railroading?

Not sure if this is a rant or a plea for help lol. Let me know if I’m off base or if it gets better? Or maybe these games are truly only for OG fans who played the original several times over?

I know some might recommend playing the actual FF7 instead, but I’m not super interested in playing the original now—I wish it weren’t the case, but I’m usually very distracted / off-put by old graphics & clunky mechanics, which is sort of inevitable for a game that age.

FF VII Re-trilogy Was there a reason for some of the Changes in combat dialogue?

I just got my hands on Crisis Core Reunion, and I’m a very big fan of Dirge of Cerberus and the original Crisis Core. I noticed when playing Crisis Core Reunion, aside from the changed voice actor, some of the lines for the DMW abilities were changed. Like when you get Tseng, Zack was originally saying “I’m trying… I’m trying!” Now he says “not if I can help it!” Is there a particular reason why they did this? I feel like it doesn’t fit, although I haven’t played any of the new stories and I’m assuming that they probably changed him as a character correct? Also, I do apologize if I get the flair incorrect. I don’t know if this would fall under original or re trilogy lol

Final Fantasy General Best FF game to learn job systems?

Hey all, I’m a relative newcomer to the FF series. I’ve played through FFI, FFVII, and am currently working through FFIV. I love these games so far, with my next planned game being FFVI.

These games have been good, but party customization has been pretty limited (which I don’t mind). I do, however, want to learn about job systems in these games. I get really worried about picking the “wrong” party, or messing up a character’s stats and spells. Which FF game would be best for me to learn these (preferably PS1 and earlier). I thought about trying FFIII or FFV

FF XVI Final Fantasy 16 me decepcionó mucho

FF VII Just Finished FF7 - My Thoughts

I've always been curious about FF7 because I liked the art design, but I was always put off by the chibi designs. Inspired by the remakes, I buckled down and finally played it and found it to be kind of a mixed bag (more good than bad).

On the positive side, I really enjoyed the combat and the progression system. I took to training my materia almost like they were pokemon, and combining materia was/is such a novel mechanic. The limit breaks/summons blew me away with how cinematic they were, especially considering how old the game is.

On the less positive side, the narrative didn't really grab me. It had it's moments (Aerith does some heavy lifting), but I never really got invested in the characters. The sephiroth clones, mcguffin hunting, and amnesia storylines didn't really land with me. Not trying to attack it: it's clearly popular for a reason. And I do like the theme of learning to be okay with your own insecurities and weaknesses. It just never really clicked for me. I also don't like it when games hide substantial content behind obtuse mechanics, or when they make it extremely easy to miss (yuffie recruitment, and the rocket codes from Cid are two examples).

On the whole, I enjoyed it. Now it's on to FF7 re-trilogy!

Final Fantasy General Bad Guys and End of Games - How did we go from Sephiroth to Ultimecia and Necron? Spoilers Spoiler

Sephiroth. Possibly one of the best and most fleshed out bag guys in gaming history. With a final assault on the Northern Crater that the game has been building up to for most of your play through.

Then we have Ultimecia with the “time kompression” and the kooky castle. And Kuja and whatever the hell that last stage is. FF9 is especially egregious with Necron being the last boss out of nowhere.

That’s not to say I don’t love both games. But the final climax in both are such let downs to 7.

It’s possible I’ve missed something. I’m aware of some issues with the localisation. Especially with the final scenes with Ultimecia missing a lot of context from the Japanese version due to constraints with how much text they could show.

Am I completely off course here? It has been over 20 years since playing both.

Last Thursday after New York Comic Con there was a Final Fantasy themed music night (with the band Midgar Messengers - check them out!) The venue was packed with FF fans and so many cosplayers, it was a great time. I wore my “sporty” Tifa cosplay for the first time and it was such a fun cosplay to dance in :)

Notes on the cosplay:
-I didn’t make this, I bought it second hand from a another cosplayer (not sure where they got it originally)
-I didn’t have my colored contacts so my eye color is edited for the photos
-Couldn’t bring the canon shoes because I only had so much room in my suitcase lol

I know this sub sees a lot of Tifa cosplays but I was happy with this one and wanted to share!

Finished in about 35 hours over exactly 50 days (Aug 28-Oct 17)
Which should I start next? I’ve been thinking it’s either ff6 or ff8 next. Possibly 10 if I find it physically before the other two.

FF XV I really, really did not care for FFXV. Why was this game made so awful?

As the title says.

I recently sat down to play Final Fantasy 15. I grew up with Final Fantasy since FF7 came out and FF7, 8, 9, and 10 are still games I return to every so often. I would like to start by saying I adore this franchise.

The entire time I was playing 15, I couldn't wait for it to be over. Noctis has got to be the most forgettable protagonist in the entire series. Your party members are genuinely interesting, but someone decided what they needed to do was make extra money with DLCs so you never get the actual good parts of the story until you get to the DLC. Some marketing genius decided what the Final Fantasy series needed was a Coleman sponsorship. The entire map is a walking simulator. I feel like the car alone is a very good analog for the entire rest of the game: Despite all the paint and the details and the cool finishes, it's still a shitty Jalopy that can't go over 45 MPH. They couldn't even make the overworld map interesting to look at. But the boring environment is nothing compared to the plot.

The story. Sucks. Hard. I think after theLeviathan fight at Altissiathe story managed to get worse, which was impressive. By the final fight in the game, I could barely care about any of the characters anymore. Thetime skip with Bahamuthas got to be the laziest handling of a story's narrative arc for a character I've seen in a long time. Probably the only silver lining to the entire game is the fighting system, and even that's got rough execution. I enjoyed the teleporting gimmick, up to a point. The fast-paced nature of some of the battles was really cool. The weird targeting and the camera going everywhere was not.

I genuinely don't know what happened when they made this title, but it may as well have been made by E3 there were so many crappy design choices that were clearly done to scrape just that little extra bit of revenue from a game. As someone who's played most of the non-MMO titles of Final Fantasy, it's easily the worst title in the entire series, hands down.

Resonance Resonance countdown artwork : VI

Today, the artist Gen Kobayashi who worked on the series before has drawn our girlies ( https://x.com/FFRS_JP/status/2111019326950326359 ).

Finally, some change ! Our cutie Fina got drawn alongside Terra. I will be honest, this one is obvious. Both are amnesiac girls who shines a lot (litteraly) and have links to espers.

Now, i hope we will see Bartz with Gilgamesh and maybe Cecil with Lasswell. Also, it would be fun for I to compare Garland and Veritas of the Dark since they look slightly similar.

Edit : it looks like this artwork is on the good way to be the most popular artwork, even above Squall or Zidane.

Edit 2 : 1000 upvotes ! The most liked artwork from the whole series. Girl power !

FF VII Re-trilogy How will Limit Break 4 work in Revelation?

I'm really curious to see how we'll be able to obtain and use LB level 4 for the characters. In the original you just find them as material, use them when you have all the previous LB of the character and then select to make it the default LB. While I could see obtaining the ability to use them through sidequests, the question is how to use them in combat. We know that LBs will still work similarly to Rebirth where you use certain sinergies to gain access to higher LB tiers, but due to how difficult it could be to do two sinergies of the same type in the same battle, it wasn't easy to see the level 3 LB in battle, except like through accessories. If LB4 worked exactly the same, it would mean that a character, aside from accessories, would have to do 3 LB up sinergies in the same battle, which few would last long enough to get there, be it because the enemy or the player would go down sooner.

FF I Took me 35 years, but I finally beat the 1st game for NES I ever owned...

Post image

TL:DR

As the title says, this was my first game other then the NES Mario/Duckhunt combo many years ago. It was this game that taught me how to read, an use my imagination.

Long story short, I had a save many moons ago where I had just got the Masamune sword an equipped it on my WM. I remember my squad even: Fighter, Black Belt, White Mage, Thief.

My brother was a very young child at the time, an he liked playing my games as well... Mario atp...

He nuked my save file back then with a squad of "AAAA" fighters... at age 9, I had my legit 1st crash out an refused to play the game until a cpl months ago.

I love this game, an even though it had a tainted start(for me), it made me smile when I saw the credits.

Beat the game with a Figher, "Monk", Thief, White Mage.

To this day, I rank this game in my top 3. Such a fun game to play an chill.

Have a fun weekend folks.

FF VII Final Fantasy VII. What the writers left out.

It is very difficult to write a review about one of the most loved, written about and highly acclaimed games of all time. 1997 I believe it was when the game was released, I wasn’t quite a teenager. It was hugely popular then, and in the intervening nearly thirty years it has been critically cemented as one of the greatest stories ever told, in any format. For those who experienced it then, the triple disc playstation release felt special to begin with. Looking back it feels nostalgic just to remember what opening that case felt like. The first time you took out a disc and placed it in the machine, the opening titles, the first hour of play… that was it, the start of a lifelong love for the world, the characters, the art, the story.

In 2026 we have seen everything analysed and over analysed in some cases. Any reviews now seem to have to try and be deliberately different to merit being written. I hope my review is not that.

Instead, I want to talk about what the story does better than any other game story I can think of, and most literary works. It leaves space for the player’s imagination.

For many people, especially those who, like me, were young when they first played it, they may not even have fully understood the game’s story at the time.

The game would have been good enough as a fairly generic RPG just based on the combat system mechanics. The materia system had its own, internally consistent metaphysics, which was hugely satisfying to manage and deploy.

Many first time players could be forgiven for accepting the prompts to overwrite the character names first time around. Personally I chose my own name for the protagonist and the names of my most beloved pets for the rest of the cast. With hindsight, whilst that’s a cute personal memory for me, it was not the right choice. The character names are too important to the story and deserve their place along side some of the great character names in literature; Ebenezer Scrooge, Cruella De Vil and Heathcliff spring to mind.

Just the names were wonderful. In the UK version, for the main cast we got Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Barret, Red XIII and Sephiroth. Add to that Cid, Vincent, Yuffie. We won’t mention the joke character: you know who I mean: let’s just pretend he never existed. On top of that we got a whole host of mostly morally grey sub-plot characters: The Turks, various Shinra executives, Hojo, Lucretia and more. I later learned that many of the names derive from certain forms of religious mysticism. I won’t attempt to analyse the deeper origins of each name here, as I will probably mangle it. Suffice to say, there is deep meaning there, as well as the beautiful aesthetic.

The point about the names could be distilled to this one: Cloud Strife. It captures everything so economically in two syllables: on one level it is his slightly moody, aloof at times persona, his head literally in the clouds at times. Then we add layers: trouble, hardship… storm clouds become implied. Finally, by the time we realise the extent of his confusion about his own identity, we think of what is being clouded from view. There is another character who some of us went on to love possibly most of all, who barely appears in the game and yet looms so large over it. Zack Fair. I could talk about him all day: in my view he is perhaps the purest hero of any story outside of Christian depictions of Jesus in the Bible… which is really saying something. There are many parallels too. That discussion is for another time. For now “fair’ covers it: he is not physically fair, and therefore it embodies both the contradiction of what the world makes of him, versus the truly fair being he is at his core, again, incredibly economical storytelling. For the purists: yes I know his surname was not mentioned in the original game, but it is an invention of the same amazing writer, and the point stands.

The game was released at a time before it was possible to create endless feeling fully explorable expansive maps. The graphics were good for the time, but blocky and stilted by today’s standards. To me this only adds to the appeal. The player had to fill in the gaps in their mind. The story had a similar quality. On the first play through, the story works on an almost surface level: a giant corporation inflicts environmental harm on the planet, a rebel group fights the good fight against it. There’s depth even there: Avalanche- could be considered a terrorist group in the eyes of some. If Shinra were a real company today, no doubt they would have a PR facade like any other multi-national corporate pushing politically correct messaging, leaving the “little people” to argue amongst themselves, in safely controlled factions, whilst the real agenda of corporatisation of everything rumbles on.

Then you get into the layers of the story. Identity, loyalty, conflict, power… a modern world militating against nature and tradition. The fictional country of Wutai is a great microcosm for the one of the game’s core themes. A parochial civilisation forged in honour and hand-to-hand combat, elevating the warrior class, such as elswhere might be embodied in the Knight or the Samurai, above all. The tragedy is palpable, as you learn how it was overpowered, commodified and reduced to a tourist attraction by an outside world of modern weaponry and mass market economics.

Deeper still, the natural world and its ancient spiritual guardians: forgotten about, exploited, experimented upon by a modern military industrial complex. Aerith, Vincent and Red XIII all feel the generational impact, and each of those beautiful souls is tormented by it in a different way. Sephiroth receives the same treatment, but turns to a darker conclusion. In many ways he is a Lucifer archetype, the writers make that blindingly obvious. Gloriously powerful and magnificent… but introverted, wounded first by the world, and then spiritually mutilated by his own self pity. In the end he is pitiable, but the spectre of his former magnificence remains undiminished, even after his ultimate defeat.

Perhaps years after my first playing of the game, I started to realise its full meaning. Ultimately it boils down to the consequence of Zack’s sacrifice. In one moment, he gave something of himself and created an imprint on a damaged soul. The rest of the game plays out as Cloud’s journey of self realisation, and back to that narrative point. Cloud starts as a damaged vessel carrying a message it lacks the capacity to read. He’s barely even a person to begin with. He is carrying a surface level aesthetic and an attitude which he himself doesn’t understand and can’t quite pull off. Somehow he knows he has a duty to come good on a promise he couldn’t speak, but is duty bound to by fate. The duty to fulfil the promise of a person you idolised, and who gave their life so that you could live, and carry on their fight for them. It’s beyond heavy. It’s crushingly powerful, almost impossible to fulfil, and about as deeply meaningful as any reason for any person to do anything, let alone save the world. What makes Cloud so loveable, is that he goes and does it, and in doing so, lives up to the promise of two souls. His own and that of his Hero.

Kazushige Nojima, you gave us more than a story. Like Zack gave to Cloud: You gave us something to try and live up to.
