In that AOC interview she literally says the way we talk about "public safety" is different now. Meaning... Chat... She's talking about Defund is different now, arguably the main policy goal of BLM. I feel like a lot of y'all didn't watch that whole interview or how policing was literally involved in the interview while thanksgiving was only one of the tweets discussed, the interviewer even says "those tweets" plural aka including the BLM tweets too.
Let's talk about the definition that was brought up during a recent stream. If what it really means is leftists were cringe and annoying and off-putting to "normies"... Why are we using a phrase so often misinterpreted, willfully using it knowing it doesn't match what AOC was saying about policing in that actual interview.
When the ultimate prize of this whole thing is to throw cold water on leftists in the past calling them cringe effectively what reactionaries have been saying about blue hair sjw for a decade. We can't win by pretending to be chuds and that includes thinking dunking on SJW 2016 style helps us somehow. when it makes the left look weak and like itself isn't even proud to stand on its positions if there's a hint of "cringe". Which is decided upon, what cringe should be excised is decided by hasan etc, the "reasonable left", when he made his lunch on being 'woke bae'. He used to say 20-22 era if you see leftist being cringe, ignore them for the sake of solidarity so the right doesn't use the left infighting opportunistically. Now, we play right into their hands.
Did yall hear how much the news guy loved hearing AOC say that? His eyes lit up and he followed up like Oh you guys think you went too far too? Interesting, he reacted. We don't have to do this, it doesn't help us, and every right wing rag was posting articles about aoc saying this is a signal of right wing victory. If you Google woke 1 sort by articles, it's a full reactionary victory lap, and that should concern us. Certainly we shouldn't be cheering on dunking on "cringe" leftists playing into right wing framing, I dont feel like thats solidarity at all
TLDR, if you can't read whole post please consider this
I hope y'all can consider what I have to say even if you disagree with me, something I totally respect and feels important in getting to the bottom of this, to have this discussion. I am worried people think this stream has enough power to redefine a word that has already been broadly interpreted a certain way. Does a 30k streamer have the power to redefine words and how they are broadly interpreted? Does it matter if in some pseudo-intellectual way we have the "CORRECT" meaning? If the rest of the country goes on interpreting what we say as to mean "BLM, Defund etc went too far, cringe ‘wokesters’ are annoying the right wing has a point". At a certain point, we have to recognize language is fluid and also, popularly defined… potentially, in this I feel strongly, out of our control. If we continue to use this language now, I’m telling everyone, you REALLY risk being misinterpreted as this segment of the online left’s definition of “woke 1” goes further and further away from the popular understanding
