Tech Help Adguard alternative
Been using adguard for past few days due to excessive amount of ads in webpages particularly espncricinfo.
However the app has significantly decreased my sot and idle time.
Any alternatives to it to block ads in chrome?
P. S. I tried using brave but didn't like it

You can use private dns rather than the vpn based. Battery consumption is little to none for private dns

Does it block in-app popups too?

You mean in app ads? Yes but not on apps like yt, Spotify etc

u/cyberspark15 27d ago
Not in stream ads. The obnoxious full screen ones in free games, apps, etc

Yes it will block ads in games and apps too

It will also block ad rewards in game as well

u/FinancialDig8163 26d ago
Yes it will. If you need ad rewards you simply have to disable the private dns and enable after as it cant whitelist apps

Nope it doesn't work always . Some times ads pop up

Private dns cant block first party and self hosted ads. The ads coming from same domain as content cant be blocked.

Ads do pop up with private DNS in ESPN.

Because private dns cant block first party and self hosted ads. Simply the ads coming from same domain as the content

Is there a way to quickly turn off/on private dns? Some websites just refused to load if I enable dns and then I have to go back to wifi settings and disable it each time to make that website load

Yes there is a foss app that will give u a quick tile option but u will have to use adb to make the app work

No problem. If you can invest some time, I would suggest you to learn to set up Nextdns and use it as it offers many more. Itβs not that complex. Try it if u wanna. You can use the id got from nextdns and paste here, settings. Only thing to learn is how different settings in the nextdns account work

No issues, I too was once or still. Basically nextdns is same as adguard. To put it simply you need to create a nextdns account, then in that account we can use different kind of blocklists according to our needs, some block lists block a huge amount of things but it can lead to breakage of apps or websites. We can also whitelist website which means ads will not be blocked in that site. Also we can see which apps or websites is blocked or allowed in our account whereas in the current adguard dns you cant. Also the adguard team can see which websites you visit but they are trustworthy so. After configuring everything you want in account you will get an id similar to the dns.adguard-dns.com you have to paste that id in the private dns settings of your phone. There are multiple tutorials and guides on yt, reddit etc for these. You can also google or use AI. But learning it is a good investment i would say

Private DNS like NextDNS works great for me too, I've barely noticed it running in the background while keeping ads away.

Ipen setting, search for dns, set to private and use dns.adguard.com, done. So websites will act up but it doesn't require any app installation and uses you phones system feature to block ads so battery consumption is significantly lower or none. Some apps like youtube official reject system set dns and access the service directly so no ads will be blocked there which is something that is also the case if you have the adguard app.

If you don't like Brave even after it's strong adblock, then you should go to the Himalayas and become a saint.
