was going through a master list of nunya sites (what ppl usually use incognito for), and discovered a use that extends beyond hiding your own search history from yourself (or hoping that what you search doesn’t affect social media recommendations/ ads in your daily life 😬)
TL;DR: Incognito protects you (a little) from malware/ dangerous sites.
when you restart your computer, all incognito tabs are wiped by default, just as an inheren feature of that browsing mode.
pardon the following run-on sentence:
this means if you‘re in the (very scary) position I was just in where, even after opening a link in a new tab (allows you to preview it just in case) and all seemed fine, you click on the tab and you have fullscreen (probably fake) malware notifications going off and fake messed-up-files stuff, followed by the horrific realization that keybinds don’t work (windows logo + tab, alt-tab, ctrl-tab, etc), when you force power off your PC/ device, the problematic tabs will automatically be gone when you turn the computer/ device back on. This prevents “startup” malware issues where the problem just comes back as soon as your browser is restarted.
Hope this finds its way to anyone that might have stopped using incognito after realizing it doesn’t actually fully protect your data from being harvested, in the hopes it will one day save someone’s phone/ PC etc.
