I never understood why the food service industry is the only one that doesn’t stick to closing times.

If I walk into a store at ten minutes til close, I have ten minutes to get my shit and check out. I don’t have an hour to shop because I came in before closing. I can’t show up at the bank and apply for a mortgage loan at 4:55pm. Restaurants should be the same way.

i think it’s largely because other stores factor in closing time to leave time. If staples closes at 10pm, me coming in to buy a pack of highlighters at 9:55 doesn’t impact them leaving in the slightest. But at a restaurant, and especially if say you’re the only closer, a 16 top could bottleneck you into staying an extra hour then planned, closing the kitchen line.

My opinion is it’s more money, but sometimes money doesn’t matter if you’re already working a 11+ hour shift. But yeah that’s the obvious difference.

*Murrican food service industry

Fixed it for you!

Try this in Germany and they beat the shit out of you with a pan.

Try what? Going to a place within their posted hours? The restaurant knows how long it takes to cook things, if they choose to seat someone at 8:45 when they close at 9, why is it the patrons' fault? Just post earlier hours?

Because "closing time" and "quitting time" are not the same thing.

The store might be closed, but the employees are still working.

For whatever reason, restaurants never figured that out. If you want to be out the door at 9pm, you need to be closed at 8pm and that final hour is dedicated to cleaning and prep for tomorrow.

If you don't understand then you've never worked one of these jobs and your input is not useful

I’ve never worked retail or at a bank? True about the bank, but I did have a retail job back in the late 90’s.
