Asking about a book recommendation or episode source? We just launched the official LPOTL Master Reading List featuring the exact research books Marcus uses for the show. Check it out to see if your question is answered there!

I’ve heard complaints on this sub about Marcus being confidently wrong a lot. This is not really one of those but it speaks to it fairly directly I’d say. I was listening to the NY Dolls No Dogs series, and for the second time (the first being in an older series), when referring to violence at a Dolls show, compared it to “Vivaldi’s” rite of Spring. He is referring to an avant garde opera in the early 20th century which allegedly caused riots. It was composed by Russian Composer Igor Stravinsky, a foundational figure in 20th Century music.
Yet somehow, One Marcus Parks, who does extensive research for multiple historical podcasts, confuses Stravinsky for Antonio Vivaldi, an Italian Baroque composer from the 1700s best known for his 4 seasons concerto. If I seem petty about this, it’s because I am. I especially tend to be that way when I am right! I almost jumped out of my skin in my car when I heard this, because it’s not the first time he’s said this. I wonder if Carolina is in on it because the last time he said this she asked, “wasn’t this when the audience was all wearing powdered wigs, etc…” Is she taking the piss or also caught lacking context in a research field. I really want to know if this is a genuine mistake, or a hidden joke. Because Marcus sounds like such an idiot saying this shit in this context. It’s like, what are you saying? 💀
So whatdyall think? I figure some of you know exactly what I’m talking about and have heard this. Some of you don’t care, so real answers only

Subway, they're eating your lunch. They're eating your CSAMdwich.
Just catching up on the Clifford Olsen eps, and I don't wish to engage further. I cede the rest of my time.

Has this been discussed?
I'm behind, I know, but I just got to Count Dante and "White guy with a black afro, pointy mustache, and Dracula cape" immediately clocked in my brain as Hercule (aka Mr. Satan) from DBZ.
I wonder if Toriyama took any inspiration.

I've hopped on this fun little romp on youtube and I think it would be absolutely amazing if the boys at LPOTL and Cassie Workman collabed. She has episodes on Aleister Crowley, The History of Wicca, Demons in Pop Culture....etc etc. The guest interviews aren't my favourite, but its funny, focused on the Occult and THERE'S PUPPETS!
Get into the Aleister Crowley episode here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cy4O98LvVXI

It's appropriate that they have probably already recorded Side Stories.

Purchased tickets a few months ago to see them in Brooklyn with my partner. We traveled over 4 hours to get there since Brooklyn was the closest for us. It was supposed to be a fun date night in the city. We don’t get much of those with two small kids. The opening act was a woman and she was amazingly funny. I hope someone here remembers her name because she was great. The show started with stand up from Eddy which was good! And then it just kinda snowballed into this weird, awkward, drunk mess. The entire show was just Henry asking the crowd, “what’s your problem?”, followed by a drunk/awkward/nervous person sort of not answering the question or saying something completely different. We thought they were going to do that bit for maybe 10 questions or something? And then they’d get into side stories and ya know… talk about true crime news? It never happened. Marcus ended up being a surprise guest but all he did was wave at everyone and laugh at eddy and Henry. Is this the norm for their live shows??? I feel disheartened. I spent so much money on this outing and I left so disappointed. I felt it was super lazy. It felt like they just took the money and came up with everything like the night before or maybe even a few hours before. Are the LPOTL lives better? Should I avoid all lives all together? Did anyone else attend and had similar views? If you enjoyed it, im glad you did! I guess it just wasn’t what I expected?

I’ve had the flu going on a week. In this time I’ve been trying to think of some of my favourite voices by Henry.
Two come to mind immediately.
Manfred Wolfart (Fritzl episode, probably spelled his name wrong)
And the iconic Charles Ng voice. That will never not send me into fits of laughter.
Give me some others you love.

NOT OC - original post linked above. Having been listening to the show more or less since its launch (and interested in true crime since childhood) none of this is surprising. And yet, the DEPTHS of delusion are astounding, not to mention the idea that men who target women and children get better living conditions than men who target other men.
“Very big TW: rape, domestic violence, murder/femicide, pedophilia
As the title says, I've been interning as a therapist in a prison. I specifically work in the prison's therapy unit for sex offenders, which is a separate unit the prisoners need to apply to, and commit to therapy enough to warrant staying there. Reasons for wanting to stay are better living conditions, nobody is beating you up for being a rapist and/or pedophile, and if you prove you're being successful in therapy you might get out of prison either earlier or, in some cases, at all.
Anyways.
There's a phenomenon called "cognitive bias", where individuals will kind of create and believe in a subjective version of reality in order to justify their actions to themselves, and be able to look at their faces in the mirror. Most rapists, pedocriminals and murderers I've encountered seem to have some level of cognitive bias, some more extreme than others. The therapy is meant to help them deconstruct the subjective "reality" and get them to accept the more objective way things happend during their crime(s), in order for them to recognize their patterns and learn ways to avoid reproducing them in the future.
I've been absolutely blown away by the level of delusion some of these men are living in in order to justify their actions to themselves.
Some notable examples include:
- The guy who, in the beginning, for the life of him couldn't understand why what he did counted as rape, since his victim "said yes". He reported (very proudly, might I add) that after hours and hours of self-reflection, he finally understood that she "probably" only said yes because he threatened her with a knife minutes earlier.
- The guy who was convinced that he only raped an 8 y/o because the father of said 8 y/o, who was pimping him out, promised the guy he could meet the father's wife (so, the son's mother) if the guy agreed to rape the boy.
- The guy who killed not one, but two of his girlfriends over the years, but thinks that since he doesn't remember anything about how it happened, women should not be afraid of him.
- The guy who, according to his assessment report, killed his girlfriend and then immediately went to the police, confessed his crime, told them where the body was and let himself get arrested. He was extremely distraught during all this, and apparently kept repeating he "had to" kill her since she wanted to break up and keep him from seeing his child.
- The guy who said he was only mean (eg. abusive and a rapist) when drunk, and his "normal self" was an absolute sweetheart. He then went on to say that he was a raging alcoholic who'd get drunk before breakfast. He did not see the dissonance.
Since my country is very big on rehabilitation, the therapeutic approach is to see the perpetrators as people who have done horrific things instead of people who are horrific. This way, they can (with a LOT of work) get to a point where they're able to honestly acknowledge what they've done and why they've done it, as well as learning new coping skills in order to not do anything like that ever again. And it seems to be working, since only the tiniest fraction of the inmates who leave this therapy program become repeat offenders (ignoring unreported cases).
I stand behind that therapeutic approach 100%, since I believe the best way to protect your daughters is to educate your sons, and this is part of it. But man, seeing people with these kinds of histories and thought processes get years and years worth of intensive therapy while their victims will often struggle to get any kind of therapy and/or support AT ALL... It does take a hell of a lot of compartmentalization not to get cynical.”
