Welcome to the newbie advice thread!

If you’ve read the FAQ and still have questions like “Should I switch to Linux?”, “Which distro should I install?”, or “Which desktop environment is best for gaming?”, this is where to ask them.

Alternatively, try r/linux4noobs and r/linuxquestions: both are active subreddits supporting new Linux users.

Please sort by “new” so new questions can get a chance to be seen.

guide Frequently Asked Questions 2.0

Thumbnail old.reddit.com
43 Upvotes

Here’s a link to this subreddit’s FAQ document (which attempts to answer many common questions).

This thread is not meant for asking frequently asked questions. There is a pinned monthly-ish “Getting Started” thread for those.

You can post suggestions for improvement below, though! Just please explain what you’re talking about. The number of FAQ editors has been 1 (one) for a while now, and that one’s a dummy that doesn’t use 95% of the fancy gaming stuff y’all do.

Reposted as an Old Reddit link because New Reddit, in addition to being generally confusing, does not display the table of contents.

wine/proton GE-Proton11-10 Released · GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom

Component Updates

  • Wine: Valve bleeding-edge 2026-10-16. This brings upstream syscall emulation through Syscall User Dispatch and native-syscall handling for EAC (EOS) launchers. Also included: Xalia now shuts down cleanly, fewer spurious X11 mouse movement events, a Witcher 3 controller rescan fix, and a ddraw fix for paletted primary surfaces.
  • Wine: PROTON_LIMIT_ADDRESS_SPACE and its address-space limits for Reverse: 1999 and Blue Protocol: Star Resonance were removed upstream.
  • DXVK: v3.1.1-134. Includes D3D9 texture, StretchRect and device-reset fixes, D3D8 CopyRects rework, a workaround for an EA anti-cheat code-signing crash, shader cache fixes, and zero-initialized shader scratch memory for Call of Duty: Ghosts.
  • D7VK: rebased onto DXVK v3.1.1.
  • VKD3D-Proton: fixes synchronization around queued transfer operations.
  • FEX: FEX-2610-30.

Controllers

  • The automatic PlayStation controller XInput fallback no longer rescans every HID device each time a game polls an empty controller slot. Since GE-Proton11-8 this caused large slowdowns, even with no controller connected:
    • Path of Exile ran at ~50 FPS instead of 200+ (#862).
    • Le Mans Ultimate slow-motion physics with a Moza wheel (#777).
    • Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town lost FPS with PROTON_PREFER_SDL (#850).
    • Setting PROTON_SONY_AUTO_XINPUT=0 confirmed this was the cause in #862; the fix itself has not been confirmed in-game yet.
  • Sackboy: A Big Adventure and Rune Factory 4 Special now default to PROTON_SONY_AUTO_XINPUT=0. This fixes the DualSense being assigned to player two in Sackboy and scrambled DS4 input in Rune Factory (#843). The variable was confirmed by two users.
  • Bluetooth DualShock 4 and DualSense rumble now works through the XInput fallback, and input no longer stops after the first rumble (#853, thanks @ilyasbounoua). Native hidraw games on Bluetooth keep the extended controller reports (gyro and touchpad).
  • PROTON_SONY_HIDRAW_XINPUT, PROTON_SONY_AUTO_XINPUT, PROTON_DUALSENSE_HAPTICS_PREFER_NON_EVENT and PROTON_DEATH_STRANDING_CONTROLLER_EFFECTS now reach the HID bus driver; previously the driver ignored them.

Wayland and Windowing

  • GNOME: fixed games and launchers closing when a window that owns a popup is destroyed (mutter: "destroyed popup not top most popup"). This affected AION 2 and Battle.net auto-login with PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 (#834). Not yet confirmed on GNOME.

Video Playback

  • MonoGame games no longer stall or crash when a song is played again, for example Picross for a Cause (#839, thanks @Petru101).

Rendering and HDR

  • KDE Plasma: HDR detection now uses KWin's per-monitor HDR state. HDR monitors are detected even when SDR brightness is set to the HDR reference level. Other compositors keep the existing detection (#838).

Other Changes

  • Arknights: Endfield: added the ACE anti-cheat driver fixes from dwproton (#847):
    • DriverEntry is called with a kernel-mode return address.
    • ntoskrnl fixes: MmCopyMemory, ServiceKeyName, MDL section views and PsGetContextThread.
    • A stub lsass.exe (SamSs) service is added and started.
    • This matches dwproton. The remaining ACE bugcheck 0x65636154 is still unresolved there too.
  • Star Citizen: loads the game's bundled AMD AGS library again, as GE-Proton11-6 did. This should avoid the EAC "Untrusted system file" violation and error 30033 (#858). Not yet confirmed in-game.
  • Faster shared SRW lock releases. Lock-heavy games spend less time in ntdll; Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 went from 24.5% to 19.1% (#844, thanks @smatkovi).
  • Build: clang/libc++ and llvm-libc build fixes (#835, thanks @FireBurn).

tool/utility The Epic Games Launcher is only broken for Nvidia users.

So I saw some people post that the Epic Games Launcher was working for them and did some digging why it was broken for me.

Turns out they designed the new launcher using Tauri which has known issues on Nvidia cards. The fix tends to be setting WEBKIT_DISABLE_DMABUF_RENDERER=1 which coincidentally makes the app run like shit (it looks like Epic is setting this automatically, which is why your UI feels sluggish).

See: https://github.com/tauri-apps/tauri/issues/10702

The only non-hacky fix afaik is an upstream patch in WebkitGTK that was denied to be merged by Gnome. So, this launcher was doomed to run like shit for anyone using a Nvidia card from the moment the framework was picked. I was able to get it running on my system without any issues by forcing it to use mesa and go through my iGPU but that is likely something that most people don't want to do, especially since if any game uses opengl or wined3d it would make those games run on my iGPU as well.

Update: A number have users have pointed out it's broken for them on AMD as well, switching to my AMD iGPU fixed it for me so I'm not sure what the issues AMD users are having.

For Epic's EAC Linux v2 to work, Fedora, Debian, SuSE (and derivativates) would need to drop or modify a kernel patch of theirs

It's about this paragraph in their FAQ:

Can I generate and enroll my own Secure Boot keys to use with other boot options?

Note: If you boot via shim and want to use custom keys for other boot options, enroll them in the Secure Boot signature database (db) instead of enrolling them as Machine Owner Keys (MOKs). Because all enrolled MOKs are typically trusted for kernel module signature verification regardless of whether they were used in the boot chain or not, EAC Linux v2 requires that they are all well-known.

This is true for the vanilla Linux kernel, but pointless on Debian, Fedora and every single of their derivatives and thus every single distro on the list.

Fedora developed long time ago a patch named KEYS: Make use of platform keyring for module signature. It is still in the current Fedora kernel as well as in the Debian kernel and all their derivatives.

The .platform keyring contains exactly what you'd think: The Secure Boot signature database (db). See Red Hat documentation.

So the currently described approach is pointless on every single distro they support, since you can load kernel modules signed with db keys.

However, the problem is, that there is no workable approach here. They couldn't allow either Shim or MOK so you couldn't boot anything not approved by Epic on your PC at all. Epic would need to convince the distros to change the patch or make it optional.

tool/utility Elgato Stream Decks and Linux - Built something i actually wanted to use. DeckHand. Simple UI, Multi deck editing, streamer support, and now virtual decks - no stream deck required.

Hey everyone. I switched to Linux for pretty much everything a year or so ago and have often struggled to fill those little gaps left by the convenience of windoze software. One of the bigger ones was for my Elgato Stream Decks. (not a streamer, i just used them for hotkey and application support) I know there are options out there, i just found them rather obtuse to use, or just plain flakey.

I kept imagining what i would want to see in the software, and after fighting with some other software and just looking at the screen and saying, "why didn't they just do...", and with the advancement of modern AI coding tools, i started tackling it myself after i had a few small projects under my belt.

I have been using it and working on it for the past few months and i'm very happy with how it is shaping up, and i hope you think so too!

Its built to be efficient. Under testing, with a stream deck and a virtual deck running it used about 0.3% of a single core of usage, measured over 10 minutes (more like 0.07% on a static page). The daemon is quite light weight and event driven, not polling. The editor is only used to configure the keys, and when its not open, its not using any resources.

So like i said, we added multi-deck editing support. Add all your decks to the editor and copy actions between them, or just build them like you have on your desk and build your profiles with all your decks on the same screen.

We now have native support for OBS, VTube Studio, and Twitch. Keeping in mind i'm not a streamer, what was added was what i saw as basic functionality. I would love for more people to try it out and let me know how it works, and if anything is missing.

And... we now have virtual decks. No Stream Deck required.

This was something i've been wanting to do from the beginning, and it was very rewarding to see it in action. It will turn any touchscreen you have plugged in, to a virtual stream deck that lets you set grid size, and then add any actions we have into it like any other deck. I have been testing it and its been working great, but i've only had a couple of devices to test on. A Corsair Xeneon Edge, and a cheap amazon touchscreen i found a while ago. Both of them work great, and look even better. Would love to get people using this and get some feedback.

https://github.com/juicetheforce/deckhand

Virtual decks: no Stream Deck required

  • Turn any touchscreen into a deck: a small USB/HDMI touch panel, a portable monitor, or something like the Corsair Xeneon Edge
  • Pick Small, Medium or Large, or set your own rows and columns, and Deckhand fills the screen with keys
  • Works with profiles and pages exactly like a hardware deck, and sits beside your Stream Decks in the editor
  • Touches go straight to Deckhand and never steal keyboard focus, so hotkeys land in your game, not on the panel
  • Touches are ignored while your session is locked
  • Access is granted only to the touchscreen you pair, never to your laptop’s built-in touchscreen or anything else

OBS Studio

  • Start/stop streaming and recording, pause recording
  • Switch scenes, mute inputs, show/hide sources
  • Keys reflect OBS’s live state, including when you change things in OBS itself

VTube Studio

  • Trigger hotkeys, toggle expressions, switch models

Twitch

  • Stream markers, clips, chat messages, and changing your stream title and category
  • Links with a code at twitch.tv/activate, with no password or secret stored in Deckhand

Also

  • Redesigned Settings window
  • Optional update check, which links to the release and never installs anything itself
  • Better error notifications when a key fails
  • Support for more Stream Deck models

Core features

  • Native Linux daemon plus a visual editor, built for Wayland (developed on KDE Plasma)
  • Any Elgato Stream Deck, several at once, edited together on one canvas
  • Profiles and pages, with drag-and-drop key setup and an icon picker that handles big icon folders
  • Hotkeys and typed text that work in games, including under Proton
  • Multi-actions, toggles, app launching and commands
  • Audio output/input switching, mute and volume (PipeWire), plus media controls with now-playing info
  • Very light: about 0.3% of one CPU core at idle, and it does nothing while nothing changes
  • Export/import plus automatic backups of your setup
  • One-line install from prebuilt releases; free and open source (GPL-3.0)

What’s coming next

  • Custom panel layouts: design your own touch panels, with buttons of any shape and size placed anywhere on the screen, custom backgrounds with adjustable transparency, and icons that fit inside each button’s shape
  • Sharing panels: export a virtual deck (layout, styles, icons, and optionally actions) and import other people’s, so a flight-sim or music-production panel can be shared
  • Sliders and knobs: continuous controls for things like volume, on touch panels and eventually on the Stream Deck+’s dials
  • Easier screen sharing: a quick on/off toggle to hand a touchscreen back to your widgets or system monitor, and later the option to give Deckhand just part of a screen
  • Windows and macOS: ports are planned. The goal is the same lightweight approach on each platform, with Linux staying the first-class home.

No dates. It’s built by one person, and features ship when they work properly.

steam/steam deck I learned Blender and brought my game Chaos Chess to SteamOS/Linux!

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Several years ago I had launched a website chaoschess.online where players could play a chess variant that used SVG images for traditional pieces and would have "crazy events" occur mid-way through a match. After using Coursera's study program on Blender and a metric ton of pdf guidebooks, I rebuilt the game into a 3D environment.

Here's the basic gist:

  • There's a 10-chapter story campaign about old chess pieces (eg, Empress, camel, lion, etc) coming back with a vengeance
  • Each match features a Chaos Event (a flood, volcano, witch's curse, blizzard) that impacts both players
  • Also there's potential for a pawn uprising, where all the pawns on the board revolt, crown a new red king, and attack both white and black pieces as a third player
  • The game also features 7 scenarios, that test your skill against varying difficulties. A viking invasion keeps pumping 3rd-player berserkers each turn onto the board, and your only goal is to outlast the opponent king. A dragons vs vampires scenario includes a day/night cycle in chess that modifies the pieces abilities. And a zombie attack is chess meets minesweeper.
  • To overcome the bad stuff happening, you get to add two Champion pieces to your board to fight on your behalf. These pieces have special abilities and moves. The Executioner can leap over pieces in front of it and eliminate the first opponent piece in its path. The lion piece can move twice, just like its historical piece. The Thief moves like a pawn but can attack diagonally backwards in addition to forwards. The Necromancer can return a captured piece back to your ranks. And so on....
  • Several gorgeous environments and the board view can be adjusted so you have full view of the action

Android game running on Linux tablet using waydroid - does this count as linux gamming?

Thumbnail

I have installed droidian on my Lenovo Legion Y700 2023 android tablet. Droidian is a halium based debian linux deriative designed for mobile devices. Then, I used waydroid (android container for linux) and installed android game (Honkai: Star rail android version) on it.

So technically, it should count as "linux" gaming, isn't it?

Discussion: Where does linux fall short?

I couldn't find a proper flare for this so I am asking the mods to grant me some leeway here xD

I wanted to ask you guys & gals where you feel linux falls short?

I mean thing's such as visibility for certain applications, ease of use, security, having a standard for various different things, etc.

Where does it fall short for you? I would genuinely be interested to hear!

What's a niche or minor issue that's not really that bad but annoys you and there's not a fix for it yet?

Like I'm not talking about crashes, or freezes, or anti cheat issues or anything like that. I'm talking about extremely small or minor inconveniences or annoyances that just get to you and there's not really a fix for it yet.

Like for me I tend to enjoy playing older CRPGs and one of the biggest issues I run into is trying to find the correct older proton version to work. Like yeah it only takes a few attempts to get the right one, but damn it'd be nice if like the Steam client had a built in protondb just to save a few clicks.

As I said, very minor issues, barely even an inconvenience.

Heroics doesn't work, it's KDE Plasma 6.8 problem or Heroic itself?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I can't open the game nor run any installer, they just quit, I even be logged out after running an installer yesterday. Today it just quit, not logged out.

Does anybody meet this error too? I'll leave the log under comment section

Steam is now blocked in my country, the logs may be little relevant to it... But it's weird, just offline games or non-steam games - does it really need to connect to Steam?

I'm not sure which one cause the problem, because I updated Heroic and KDE 6.8 at the same time.

I tried:
- Using different versions: Flatpak, Appimage, Official package from CachyOS and even .pacman, they all have this problem

- Disabling umu

- Change runners

How about a 3D 300 KB Linux demo that fits on an SD disk?

Thumbnail
youtube.com
18 Upvotes

City Flight is an endless flight through a procedurally generated city at night: street canyons, loops, barrel rolls, knife-edge flight along the facades, climbs through thunderclouds and dives back into the neon. Lightning strikes the towers, and the glitches hit right on the beat.

Downloads (~300kB, fits on a SD floppy disk): https://flashview.net/screensaver/

What makes it a bit unusual:

- Nothing is modelled. The city, every window light and the flight path are generated at runtime.
- The music comes from a custom softsynth, with no samples.
- You can fly it yourself. Grab the mouse to take the stick, and the autopilot takes over again when you let go.
- Fully offline: no account, no telemetry, no network access.

Linux: x86-64, X11/GLX, and it also runs on Wayland via XWayland. It needs glibc 2.34+, libX11 and libGL. libXi and ALSA are optional (for raw mouse input and music, which also works with PulseAudio/PipeWire).

Yesterday I switched from Windows 10 to Arch Linux (KDE Plasma) on my old laptop

I thought Arch Linux is very hard to install and configure but actually it's slightly harder than installing Windows. I faced a problem with nvidia driver (I have GeForce GTX 1050 Mobile) but eventually installed nvidia-580xx packages from AUR and now it works. Only game I have tried in Arch for now is Don't Starve Together with Steam's Proton.
I'm glad I can try Linux, I think in the future when I get better PC I will still use Linux.
I would be glad to hear your gaming experience in Arch or other distros.

P.S. People in the comments said that Arch I installed had helper script actually, original Arch is harder to install. Thank you all for pointing that out 😅

Native x86_64 build (Vulkan), crossplay with Windows and macOS players. The demo has all three modes on two maps, bots offline and online play. Tested on real Linux hardware, but I'd love more reports, especially on different distros and GPUs.

If you download in the browser: chmod +x AshesToArms.x86_64 after unpacking. The itch app handles that for you.

wine/proton GD refuses to start upon installing and setting up Geode on NixOS (this was pre-2.209)

Back when I used NixOS (for a very brief moment), I wanted to play Geometry Dash with the Geode mod extension. I did everything I needed to do and upon typing the given command in Steam (WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xinput1_4=n,b" %command%) my game closed upon starting.
Is there anything I need(ed) to do extra?

tool/utility Nvidia RTX HDR on CachyOS!

Hey guys! Just wanted to introduce my current work in progress for CachyOS specifically, at the moment I have a working prototype for Nvidia RTX HDR which has measured around 0.27ms additonal latency at worst!

Heres the repository for those interested in taking a look, this was made possible by the linux community, OpenAI's Codex, and Claude Code!

https://github.com/chaosfox26/chaos-hdr

It should work with DX9-12 games and OpenGL games, VR games have yet to be tested.

Tested and working games:

FFXIV
Aion 2
Marvel Rivals
Monster Hunter Wilds

RTX HDR off for AION 2
RTX HDR on for AION 2
RTX HDR panel while playing games, Note: It's been renamed to Chaos HDR for release.

As above.

I have a corsair 2tb (mp600lpx iirc) formerly in the ps5 which is not playing nice with my steam machine. I want to try a firmware update via usbc caddy, but don’t have a windows pc. In theory if i add the install to steam and run it, what’s the likelihood it would work with the drive over usb?

Working Japanese IME with FFXIV

With the recent data center matching change in FFXIV, it became more important for me to be able to actually type in Japanese since now it is common to match with players that expect it instead of auto translate. Knowing that using fcitx normally with it isn't good (movement keys get unstable) I was worried this may be the back-to-winblows moment but gave ChatGPT one chance to do deep research if there is any recent solution. I don't know how it found this but there is!

https://github.com/niku-0/ffxiv-ime-bridge

It's a dalamud plugin that interfaces with fcitx so it does not have to go through Wayland, X or such. With the game running with direct input and only the chat box interfacing with fcitx (I am surprised that Dalamud allows actual chat hooks for this that's pretty great), Japanese input with no effect on gameplay.

This is not my project, and it is new and obviously vibe coded. Use at your own risk. But with this long standing problem finally solved for me, wanted to share in case anyone else wants to give it a try.
