halloween East London trick-or-treaters

Post image
17 Upvotes

Hey neighbours!

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I’m new to East London and was wondering how many trick-or-treaters I can typically expect in this area. I don’t want to end up buying way too much or running out halfway through the night.

Also, what do kids seem to enjoy getting these days, and what do parents wish they got more of? I know candy is part of the fun of Halloween, but I was thinking of mixing in some chips or preferred school snacks, too, if there’s a general need.

Any insight into what Halloween is usually like around here would be appreciated. Thanks! 🎃

Ask a Local! Donating

Looking to see if anyone knows somewhere I can donate used socks - I was just gifted some new socks but many of my current socks are not ripped or in worse enough condition to be tossed in the garbage. I feel like someone could get more life out of them.
Many of the organizations I’ve looked into don’t accept used socks, I understand why. But I also don’t want them to be resold at Goodwill, and i’m sure there’s many people on our streets who would appreciate socks used or not, especially with winter arriving.

I’m looking for an occupational therapist who has experience with neuromuscular diseases. I was recently diagnosed with a progressive genetic disease, and am looking to find some therapy services like a podiatrist, OT, physio that can help me. Google hasn’t been much help with the neuromuscular part. Thank you!

🚗🚗Transit/Traffic Another accident at Langarth St. E and Cathcart

In 2024, a car crashed through the backyard fence at the corner of Langarth St E. and Cathcart St, and ended up in the owner’s yard. The fence was partially destroyed. Had the owner and their young child been outside at that moment, they could easily have been killed.

Since then, the city has introduced “traffic calming measures” at the intersection. I believe they’ve made things worse. They amount to a few signs indicating that east-west traffic on Langarth has a two-way stop and to watch for pedestrians, while north-south traffic on Cathcart has no stop at all. That setup is confusing, and the results show it: multiple near misses, a lot more honking (which suggests drivers are regularly surprised by each other), and just yesterday, another collision, with a car travelling north-south striking one travelling east-west.

I contacted Skylar Franke, our city councillor, who said the intersection doesn’t meet the provincial criteria for a four-way stop, but that the decision could change if there is enough public demand.

So I’m asking for the collective experience of people in London: what is the most effective way to build that demand? Is a petition the right tool, or is there a neighbourhood association, community group, or other grassroots approach that has worked for intersections like this? If you’ve pushed the city for a traffic change before, I’d love to hear what worked and what didn’t.

If you live near Langarth and Cathcart, or drive through it regularly, I’d also like to hear your experiences. Near misses and collisions you’ve seen firsthand would help make the case.

discussion / opinion I need advice re: bathroom reno /contractors

Need this advice ASAP before hubby makes a rash decision. I'm already kind of pi#ssed as hubby has decided to go ahead with a bathroom reno because of some damage due to, what we suspect is one of our kids splashing too much in the shower when showering alone. Basically had one contractor came by this week, who will give us a catalogue of their products. Looking at the quote-they have model names- they are upcharging a huuuge amount. Like, a 40 item for 200, under 200 for 800. And so on and forth. Is there such a thing as contractors where I buy my own? Like, this is insanity.

Ask a Local! Reliable and affordable commercial sign company in London

Hi London, my partner and I are opening a new family business in London and need outdoor sign and window decals. I have seen a number of sign shops on google but not sure who is reliable and affordable.

Looking for advice from anyone who has worked with sign companies and have experience purchasing commercial signs (illuminated or non-illuminated), window decals etc.

Any advice on top companies, how long it you to get your sign installed and how much you paid will be greatly appreciated? I understand that cost is dependent on the type of sign, dimensions etc. Just want to have some estimates as we begin shopping around.

Thanks for your help.

Hello, Google says there is a London Chinese school over at Quarrier Road — anyone hear anything from that place?

Anyone have any recommendations? I don't like online courses so it would have to be in-person.

discussion / opinion What's with the shipping containers at the Riverside Boat Launch?

Post image
28 Upvotes

I drive down Riverside Dr. a couple times per week. For the past 4-5 months a pair of shipping containers have sat at the Parking Lot beside the boat launch. One's now equipped with a large set of solar panels and the other looks like it has gas service and a restaurant ventilation fan attached to it. They seem to be set up as long-term structures.

I understand the boat launch is anticipated to be reconstructed in 2027, but these seemed to be placed way outside of that schedule, so wasn't sure if it's directly related. https://getinvolved.london.ca/riverside-boat-launch-park

EDIT: I was just informed it's used by the fire department for storage of the items they use during water rescue training exercises
