Discussion Weekly Wins/Victories Thread - Share your good news here :)
Welcome to the weekly wins/victories Sunday thread!
Thanks to u/martysgroovylady, we've decided to make a weekly thread specifically so that folks can share and discuss their wins and victories that they've had regarding fatphobia this past week. Did your doctor listen to you? Did you get someone new to listen to the podcast? Were you able to have a good conversation with a friend or acquaintance about fatphobia? Did you make some good progress in therapy? Feel free to share your feel-good stories to mark a strong start to the new week :).
Feel free to also share news you've found on the internet that feels like a victory against fatphobia! Maybe your state just made discrimination against fat people illegal, or there's a fat activist activity going on in your area (e.g. Fat Beach Day in NY).
Please remember: Do not vote or comment in cross-posted linked threads, keep the discussion here. Thanks all! Have a wonderful week.

Related topic What is with people’s obsession with Anthony Fauci?
I just finished listening to the AIDS denialism episode (bleak af) and I was kinda surprised to discover that Fauci had been hated by odious people even before Covid. I don’t understand it. Why? What is it about this man that makes right wingers and other weirdos have such a hate boner for him? The man has spent his life serving the public. The man has saved lives for 30+ years. Can’t these people leave him alone?

Discussion Why has the world lost interest in low sodium diets?
Low sodium diets are MUCH less popular today than was the case when I was growing up. I remember seeing commercials for a salt substitute product called NoSalt, which I now know consists of potassium chloride instead of sodium chloride. I also saw commercials for sodium-free TUMS.
Most doctors and cardiologists still recommend a low sodium DASH diet, but it feels like I'm the only one on it. (In contrast, it feels like I'm the only one who does NOT supplement with protein and has NEVER tried a low-carb diet.) Yes, a low-sodium DASH diet is my normal diet. I've been consuming an ultra-healthy diet since the spring of 2020, and avoiding the sodium bombs has made my taste buds more sensitive than they used to be. (For example, I ate prime rib for the first time this past summer, and it turned out to be saltier than i remember.) I do NOT miss the side effect from a sodium overdose - persistent thirst that's hard to quench no matter how much water I drink.
Hypertension is still common, strokes are still a leading cause of death, and medications for lowering blood pressure are some of the most widely prescribed drugs. Yet hardly anyone is interested in a low sodium diet.
When I'm looking for a low-sodium meal option at restaurants, a low-sodium diet feels like a fringe diet. Only a small percentage of restaurants accommodate this. The problem is that most restaurants now order food that was pre-salted in the factory. It turns out that I'm now the big expert on low sodium meal options. That's sad, because I know I'm NOT the first person to be interested in a low sodium diet. You'd think that there would be databases listing all the restaurants that accommodate a low sodium diet. But there aren't.
Why has interest in a low sodium diet collapsed? It feels like the Atkins Diet fad of the early 2000s changed everything for the worse. Kooky fads and schemes keep going mainstream while actual healthy diets are ignored, as if a high-fiber Mediterranean/DASH diet were too kooky to be worthy of even criticism or debate.

Discussion did anyone happen to see this?
hmmmm… lol.
love hearing this stuff from a thin person. 🙄 also all the talk of “exercise is good!” like fat people don’t, lmao. and i’m assuming they have no idea how much more difficult “just exercising” is in a larger body.
also anecdotally, even when i was a lot heavier than I am now, I still kind of didn’t really “believe” my brain/body signals were that different than a thin person’s… but hoooo boy did that change when I started taking a GLP1. It was truly a “holy shit - is this what thin people feel like?” like of COURSE they think it’s easy - b/c it is for them! they have literally no concept of it. It truly reframed my position on hearing exercise/diet thoughts from thin people.
i’m all for being critical of MP (and don’t think it is super accurate or unbiased all of the time) or any media you intake but lordddd this one is not it.
ETA: FWIW - If you didn’t happen to already see it in your algo its not worth watching
also —- to the commenter claiming “exercise isn’t walking and the AHA says it isn’t” that was a lie : https://www.heart.org/en/healthy-living/exercise-and-physical-activity/walking :)

Discussion What are these shirts referring?
So, I love MP. I have recently told my husband that my toxic trait is having several books out from the library and opting to listen to MP instead. I’ve heard them all and I have heard all the after dark ones too.
So I feel kind of dumb. I just realized they have merch and was browsing. Can someone give me the context of these three shirts? (I got the Apple and pear….)
I feel like I should know this but I can’t figure it out.

Discussion Book rec to teach a 9 yr old about nutrition
Does anyone have a recommendation for a book that takes a neutral tone to teach kids about nutrition?
I want something that doesn’t make being fat a big bad boogie monster (I am fat.) Or that eating ice cream is “bad.”
At home we teach her she should have a fruit, veg, protein, carb on her plate and if she wants a dessert, that’s fine too. Now we’re at a point where I’d like to go deeper into how different foods affect the body without it being shame or guilt based.

Discussion I’m so sick of people assuming I don’t exercise because I’m in a larger body
The last two work trips I took (I’m usually remote) I had two separate groups of people bring up either exercising or a specific physical activity and ask each person in the convo—except me—if they do it. E.g. “do you hike?” gets asked to everyone but me in a 4-5 person conversation.
They only make eye contact with each other, as if I’m not even there. I really don’t think I’m being overly sensitive—I think because I’m in a bigger body, they just assume it’s not relevant. I make sure to interject but does this happen to anyone else?

Discussion Why does diet culture worship TDEE calculators?
If you look at the FAQs and wikis of the various weight loss subs on Reddit, one of the first things you're told to do is use one of those TDEE calculators to figure out how many calories per day your body uses and subtract a certain number from it. You just enter your height, weight, age, gender, build, and other parameters. The algorithm spits out a certain number of calories per day that you'd have to consume to maintain your current weight.
However, these TDEE calculators are a textbook example of Garbage In Garbage Out. They'd have you believe that a small change in calories per day corresponds to a LARGE change in weight. If you don't believe me, try one of those calculators yourself. Vary the weight while keeping everything else the same. You'll see that you'd have to gain or lose a LOT of weight to get much change in your daily maintenance calories.
Over the course of the seasons, my calorie consumption varies a LOT more than my body weight does. Cold weather gives me a large appetite. Bitterly cold weather gives me a gargantuan appetite. Hot weather gives me a small appetite. Enough food for July would be extremely inadequate for January. Enough food for January would be excessive for July.
According to those TDEE calculators, my summer diet is consistent with starving to death while my January polar vortex diet is consistent with being double to triple my actual body weight. Both extremes are lies. While I lose weight in summer and gain weight in winter, the change in my weight is more than a full order of magnitude smaller than what the calculators would have you believe.

Discussion Atkins Diet fad: Was this the beginning of fad diets going mainstream?
I remember when the Atkins Diet was all the rage in the early 2000s. I feel like I'm the only one who hasn't been on a low carb diet at one time or another.
Atkins wasn't the first kooky diet I heard of, but it felt like the first one to go mainstream. Prior to the rise and fall of the Atkins Diet, fad diets (such as the infamous Cabbage Soup Diet) were promoted in supermarket tabloids and other sketchy sources, not the mainstream media. I remember that interest declined after the death of Dr. Atkins himself in 2003, but the Atkins fad has since ended up being replaced by other kooky fads and schemes, including The Biggest Loser. I never imagined that the Atkins Diet would return, but it has. Diet culture simply slapped a fresh coat of paint on it and renamed it as the Keto Diet. Worse yet, some people complained that the Keto Diet isn't kooky enough, and this led to the even kookier carnivore diet.

Content warning: Fatphobia I watched YFF with my almond mom, and it went … as expected
I had a very similar upbringing as Aubrey did. My mom brought me to Weight Watchers when I was like 11. She constantly made negative comments about her own, very average petite body. I’ve been overweight my whole life.
Anyway, I love the podcast and have been wanting to watch YFF so I rented it and watched it the other night when my mom was over. I thought maybe it could be eye opening for her, but wow it fell completely on deaf ears. Her comments included:
-so I don’t get it, is she just saying she’s ok with her body?
-there are shots for this now; why would she not do that?
-(during the cake scene) oh maybe she has raging diabetes
And then at the end of the movie, she looked at me and said “I never said anything about your body. Do you remember that? Remember how I made an effort to not say anything about it?”
So anyway. Some things never change. By the next morning she was saying how she really needs to lose 2 pounds.
