We jumped in the bus drivers pool. This was in late 90s early 2000s.

Its 2026 and I walk my son to the bus stop just outside of the gates of my community.

What changed?

Social media. Everyone sees everything wrong that happens anywhere and when nothing goes wrong the same stuff gets recirculated. Parents have been pushed into a constant state of paranoia. At least enough have to be able to condemn those who don’t.

I tried to explain to a parent of a 5 and 7 year old that no one wants to kidnap your kids and she insisted sex trafficking is a thing. Yes, I know it is, but they don’t want to traffic your spoiled brats. Sex traffickers are businessmen. They’re going to target kids who are easier to trap and tame like foster youth, kids from impoverished countries. Why would a sex trafficker want your chubby suburban kids who throw a tantrum when you take away their iPad? Your kids are perfectly safe walking the 2 blocks to CVS, especially with the 30 Ring cams they’ll pass on the way there. Nearly all missing children in America were kidnapped by an ex, not by a sex trafficker, so if anything, women should be more careful about who they procreate with than worry about their kids being sex trafficked.

🤣 well damn. It is true, but its hard to see it that way. We do worry that our child will be snatched and I know the cameras will show us what happened, but the problem is the cameras will not prevent it from happening.

I AM confronting my irrational fears. I allowed my son to walk alone to his last tutoring session (held at out clubhouse) and this morning I didnt walk him to the bus stop, I watched him as he walked by himself.

Its hard. The fear doesn't consume me, but I feel immensely responsible for his safety and well-being.

It’s funny. I remember having the run of the town when I was like 7. Walk down to the corner store for some candy. Bike to my friends a few roads down (rural roads, so it was quite a ways and right next to the highway). Now I have a hard time letting my 12 yo walk .5 miles to school.

Good on you for facing that and giving him his independence. The more you allow (safely) the more capable he will become.

Oh yes, the corner store. We walked there in Elementary school as well. My dad would send us to grab a Sun Sentinel Newspaper.

Will we ever return to children roaming freely again?

Thank you, I am pushing myself.
