I'd like a movie that's maybe atmospheric with good world-building. I haven't watched any Halloween movies yet this season, but movies I tend to like have great cinematography.
I'd be open to a movie that is gothic, camp, OR super cozy (like Halloweentown, but for the disney kids who grew up).
I tried to watch the love witch, beautifulllll, but couldn't get into it for some reason - might try again next week
A film to watch when you're feeling a little defeated by the world, a little unsure of the direction your life is heading, or when you just feel sort of ... stuck.
The essay below the poster image comes from my blog. In order for this Reddit post not to look "promotional," I"m not linking directly to the blog. But if you'd like a link to read more, please feel free to ask in the comments and I'll be happy to provide it.!
There are some films, just like people, that find ways into your heart and stubbornly insist on lodging themselves there despite all reason. Ā Some may insist on telling you that your heart is wrong, but it is they, of course, who are mistaken. Ā It may well be true that this odd thing you like is generally not considered likable, that you adore something not generally considered adorable. Ā So be it.
Such is the way for me andĀ Joe Versus the Volcano, a movie I've heard people call loud, obvious, crass, facile, silly and too clever for its own good. Ā I've heard it described as grim and depressed.
I also know people who are called those things, and some of them are truly fine, wonderful people once you see past the surface. Ā I am proud to know them, even if others are not, and when I hear criticisms of them, I feel most sorry for the people passing judgment. Ā Their view of the world is limited, informed not by their hearts but by their heads.
Joe Versus the Volcano, to be fair,Ā isĀ puerile. Ā It is silly. Ā It is often loud, sometimes crass and frequently too clever for its own good. Ā There is fairly little doubt in my mind that it is obvious, too, but only in the ways that fairy tales and fables are obvious. Ā It is neither grim and is the opposite of depressed, though it starts out that way.
It begins with a man who is sad. Ā He faces the anxieties of modern life, problems like a soul-sucking job (he works at "the home of the rectal probe," which seems like a satirical extreme except that rectal probes exist, which means someone actually does make them), a hateful boss, and co-workers who look like zombies. Ā But how do you show problems like these in ways that really get to the heart of what people feel when they have dead-end lives? Ā It's a problem for many films, which try to portray life in ways that are at least marginally realistic.
Director/screenwriter John Patrick Shanley, who won the Oscar for the lyrical magic in hisĀ Moonstruck, knows the problem with realism is that it's never at all realistic. Ā So, from start to finish,Ā Joe Versus the VolcanoĀ frames its story as a modern-day fable. Ā It even begins with the words, "Once upon a time ..."
That should be a clue thatĀ Joe Versus the VolcanoĀ is going to be anything but realistic, but perhaps because it's not an animated musical, most people seem not to take it that way. Ā When Meg Ryan shows up as three different characters, each with ridiculously abstracted personalities, people seem incapable of grasping that this is not realism but fantasy. Ā They have a hard time with a doctor explaining that Joe Banks (Tom Hanks) is going to die of a "brain cloud." Ā They want to know what a "brain cloud" is and why they've never heard of it. Ā They've never heard of it because a "brain cloud" is a disease that exists in the kind of world where chocolate manufacturers wear purple velvet coats, where slippers are made of glass, where puppets turn into boys and houses fly to Oz in tornadoes.
By the timeĀ Joe Versus the VolcanoĀ was released in 1990, things like that didn't happen in the movies anymore. Ā That's a shame.
InĀ Joe Versus the Volcano, Joe is directed -- for reasons far too elaborate to explain here -- to fling himself into a volcano on a remote South Pacific island where the natives include Abe Vigoda and love to drink orange soda.
He tries to get to the island on a boat whose crew is led by one of Meg Ryan's three characters, Patricia, a wounded woman who has what I consider one of the all-time great screen monologues in which she explains that the pain in her soul is something Joe is going to see.
Joe and Patricia survive a shipwreck, incongruously dance to classic rock-and-roll while floating on top of expensive luggage, and almost die.
Joe's near-death scene is a visually magnificent one, and a beautifully honest one in the ways of honesty in fables: As he watches the moon rise over the South Pacific, he is humbled in the presence of the universe, and utters a short prayer to "God, whose name I do not know." Ā He understands that his life is more than he ever imagined it to be, and in that moment he isn't just talking about the grand adventure he has come to experience, but even that awful life under fluorescent lights at the rectal-probe place.
Eventually, Joe and Patricia stand atop the volcano and face their moment of truth. Ā Again using the tools of fable-telling with brilliant precision, Shanley creates a moment of rare insight as Patricia explains the options to a still-scared Joe. Ā "Nobody knows anything, Joe," she says. Ā "We'll take this leap and we'll see. Ā We'll jump, and we'll see. Ā That's life, right?"
Yes, that's life. Ā And if those words were the only ones anyone ever remembered from the impressive career of John Patrick Shanley, they would be enough. Ā They are simple, straightforward, even mildly lyrical. Ā They are the reasonĀ Joe Versus the VolcanoĀ exists -- to hearten those who have been disheartened, to embolden those who have become timid.
It is the best reason a film can be made: To impart a particular vision of the world that might help make the lives of others a little bit better. Ā They are words I come back to over and over in my own life.
Perhaps they are spoken by an unlikeable character in a film that is loud, brash and unsophisticated. Ā I don't care. Ā They are honest words in a movie overflowing with sincere, sympathetic observations about the plight of people who think they have to stay stuck in their jobs, that their lives have become small, that they must have a "brain cloud" that will get them in the end one day.
We all feel like that from time to time. Ā Seek out this odd, beautiful, imperfectly perfect little film sometime, ideally on a cold and rainy day when you can't imagine the sun returning. Ā If you give it just half a chance,Ā Joe Versus the VolcanoĀ will make you feel better about life. Ā No matter who you are,Ā Joe Versus the VolcanoĀ believes in you.
The same can't be said for many films. Ā Joe Versus the VolcanoĀ is an adorably optimistic, admittedly uneven piece of work -- and it's that unevenness that makes it so rare. Ā It is not the best film ever made, it is just one of the most loving, kind and secretly sweet films ever made. Ā Its failures are evident, but its successes outshine them.
It's the movie I return to time and time again when I need to be reminded of my own capacity for strength, daring, risk-taking and adventure, whether big or small. Ā It's the movie that helps me feel better about myself. Ā I hope someday, when you're on your own homemade raft looking for any sign of life on an endless sea of your own making, it will do the same for you.
Other people may tell you it's not worth watching, that it's a big epic mess of a movie. Ā Don't listen to those people. Ā They have brain clouds.
Looking for good movies set during these historical periods, they can be of any genre as long as they are good quality. Doesn't matter if they director is native or foreigner.
I know practically nothing about movies and haven't really watched anything besides older comedy's when I was younger. I've been interested in these type of movies though, and I would really appreciate some recommendations!!
Youāre looking for a movie that gives you Halloween vibes but isnāt your run-of-the-mill horror movie? This is the one you want.
Itās not horror. And itās not Halloween. But itās got elements of both.
Itās about October.
The October filled with darkened, windy days, yes. Also, the October of our hearts, when we realize the year is going fast. And the October of our souls, when we realize we are never going to be young again. And maybe we arenāt okay with that.
Itās quiet, itās melancholy, itās evocative and itās got a magnificent James Horner score. And, if youāre into that sort of thing, an amazing, weird, frustrating history.
It doesnāt entirely work, please donāt think Iām saying itās a perfect movie. It isnāt. But you wonāt ever forget it.
Hi guys, sometimes I feel I saw every sci-fi movie ever. Please recommend me some. It could international, VHS or TV, old or unpopular opinion about the movie, I don't care. My recommendation is Brother From Another Planet and Born In Flames.
Each day Iāll pick 5 random movies from my list and paste them here, and whichever movie gets most positive reviews or least negative reviews, Iāll go with it.
I would appreciate telling me a brief feedback of any movie you watched from this list.
Vanakkam! Iām looking for some movie recommendations and Iād really appreciate some lesser-known suggestions.
Iāve been trying to explore more of world cinema rather than just watching the usual popular Hollywood/Netflix recommendations. Iām especially interested in movies that leave an impression, make you think, or have something interesting to say about people, life, relationships, society, etc.
Iām open to movies from any country or language ā Japanese, Korean, Iranian, French, German, Spanish, Indian, Scandinavian, Eastern European, whatever. Subtitles are completely fine.
Iāve already watched some well-known films like Taste of Cherry and The Sacrifice, and Iām slowly getting into this kind of cinema. I enjoyed Taste of Cherry, although I felt like it was intentionally incomplete. I also watched The Sacrifice and appreciated it, but Iām realizing that extremely slow, abstract, or heavily poetic movies might not always be my thing.
So Iām looking for a balance: something artistic and different, but still engaging enough that I donāt spend half the movie wondering when something is going to happen.
Iām particularly interested in:
Psychological dramas/thrillers
Character-driven movies
Unreliable reality / mind-bending stories
Existential or philosophical themes
Beautiful cinematography
Movies with strong atmosphere
Crime/thrillers that have more depth than a typical genre movie
Great coming-of-age or relationship stories
Underrated films that deserve more attention
Iām also interested in discovering directors rather than just individual movies, so if thereās a director whose filmography you think I should explore, definitely mention them.
What are some movies youād recommend to someone trying to genuinely explore world cinema?
4 Lions is one of my favorite movies, I love the dark social commentary about taking ideology too far without demonizing the broader group. Is there something similar for the American evangelical "guns and god" faiths? Maybe Mexican folk Christianity or something around Hindus vs Islam vs Sikhs? nothing pure fiction, nothing involving big groups co-ordinating in conflict. I want a farce about a small outgroup against whole societies.
Iām thinking like johnny cash, wild west that hasnāt caught up to the times, the depression bonnie and Clyde/badlands 1973
Shadow of a doubt 1943
Days of heaven 1978
The searchers 1956
Some less related but also enjoyable examples were stoker 2013, 1883 (tv series but still) elia kazan's east of eden (I'm not watching there will be blood)
This is one of my favorite post apocalyptic movies of time and I only discovered it a few years ago. Any recommendations for movies/shows that are similar to it? Thanks
I donāt want to specify exactly which elements need to be present in another series or film; Iād just love for someone who has watched Life After Life and found it beautiful (cinematically, emotionally, narratively) to recommend something else that is close to their heart and worth checking out.
One note: doesn't have to be about death. Cause ironically, I feel this series is more about life than death, after all.
Okay so I want a spooky show or movie thatās scary but not over the top. I wouldnāt necessarily call love it if you could recommend me something that isnāt as widely known. Like a small gem you found on Netflix/tubi/disney. Preferably something paranormal. For reference, the most recent show I watched that I enjoyed was the show Dead Boy Detectives. So something along those lines would be good. But anything paranormal is fine.
Films like Green Knight which gives its own spin on Sir Gawain and The Green Knight, 10 things I hate about you being an adaptation of taming the shrew by William Shakespeare, how Kurosawa adapted Shakespeare and all.
Not 100% sure if that description is correct, but I'm essentially looking for things similar to Everything Everywhere All at Once, Sorry To Bother You, Good Luck Have Fun Don't Die, Mickey 17, and so on (with Mickey 17 admittedly not fitting as closely to this as the rest, with it being more of an edge case of what I'm down for)
UPDATE: MODS CURRENTLY have this locked and i canāt get it undone. if they do i will respond to your comment!! they said it was because i wasnāt interacting but the only time i wasnāt was when i was Asleep. i would like to keep responding, this is helpful and itās helping me home in on the vibe! also great recs! thx
ou know when thereās like a whole filter on it? the color grading and color scheme is consistent and creates a world. beautiful to look at. great production design. EDIT: i think the kind of color grading/stylization im talking about is a 21st century thing.
i like psychological things or character studies; yk, stuff that focuses on one person or a small group of people. iāve seen a lot! would really like some new stuff that fits the vibe :)
-NO Wes Anderson, Baz Luhrman, Sofia Coppola, or Yorgos Lanthimos. please
-no sexual assault of any kind
-EDIT: IāM GOING TO KEEP UPDATING STUFF IN FORGOT HERE SORRY!! not really into erotic romances or serious romances. i donāt like horror comedy either, and i do not like action movies or gangster movies. love mcdonagh though
and i need something with content, not just slow burn the whole time. good pacing. sorry im trying to really pin down the vibe, lmk if none of this makes sense!
