It looks well-made. The example shown would take some skill to make, but not $900 worth of skill.

Some, but a box joint jig makes those corners easier than they look. Plus a router template to carve out the handles, and edge banding glued onto the lid. A first year woodworker could make this, no problem.

The only thing dumb is paying 900 for that. Don't care that somebody did, but it's dumb. The fans don't feel ripped off because they see value

It’s worth whatever people are willing to pay for it. They’re mostly paying for the name not the box. Personally I think it’s fine, like if people with no taste wanna give you money I don’t think that’s the same as price gouging or a bait and switch scam or some social arrangement where you feel obliged to buy it.
