Bet he could get Snoop. Snoop has proven time and time again that no matter what the gig, if you give him 20 bucks and some gin & juice, he'll show up.
He's smoked so much weed its impressive that he's actually functional at all tbh. Weed ain't as bad as other drugs in a lot of ways but...cognitive functionality after long term use is generally significantly affected.
The super stoner snoop is just a character he plays. It's the black knock of version of Willie Nelson. There is like 3 or 4 different characters he plays. Olympics host doing the c walk and saying fo shizzle for the white man is the worst one imo.
You are falling for a character thinking it's real. The guy is doing press crap all day at the Olympics. You really think he's smoking the whole time in all of NBC buildings, press areas, and stadiums? Remember when he was all about running his kids football team and sports organization. He was super stoned the whole time? You fell for it.
Nah man, the only explanation needed is tolerance. You really have never seen/read about some dude who needs 300 mg to get high vs some newbie that needs like 2 mg?
Snoop could absolutely be smoking a blunt all the time and not really be high at all bc of his tolerance. What, you think him hiring a blunt roller as part of his crew (even if its exaggerated) means nothing?
I think you just don't understand weed or drugs in general.
Snoop gets paid easily high six figures to play, and he'll still show up 30 minutes late and play 5+ cover songs. Still salty about him at riot fest in 2015. "snoop is playing doggy style in full" * plays 3 songs from it and 6 covers.
He also requires a QP of weed. Seriously, my friend booked him for a show in the late 1990s and that was part of his fee. Though that might have been a special arrangement.
I'm not sure what you're trying to get at by saying this. I don't follow him on social media nor keep up with him generally anymore if I can help it but, knowing his particular brand of conspiracy brain I assume this remark indicated a belief that holding nazi views is something society will tolerate and not come after you for but soon as you specifically verbally attack the Israeli state then the powers that be will come out to smear you.
There are many on the right in the American political sphere who say absolutely reprehensible racial remarks, including towards Jews, and see no repercussions. Soon as any talking head of any stripe talk bad about Israel though? Full court press from the media as we're seeing with Macklemore.
I don't feel like this remark, assuming this was his intent, really suggests he's all that pro-Jewish or pro-Israel. If anything it suggests, given his hard nazi turn at that time, he's very comfortable feeling anti-Jewish and only regrets that he can't be *even more * anti-Israeli.
I might be getting him confused with someone else, but I'm sure that I remember him making some pro-Israel comments somewhere and pointing out the irony.
The actions being taken by the government of Israel under the guise of judaism are the single worst thing done to the public image of Jewish people in the past decade.
I can agree that actions being done by Israel inflames antisemitic attitudes abroad, but it is a bit cartoonish to suggest that somehow being pro-Israel means you're an antisemite, which is the original point you made.
I wasn't speaking positively of him, but I am saying that those like Kid Cudi are coming to his defense right now, which does poise well for an apology tour.
You might be surprised. A lot of antisemites love the idea of Jewish people all being in a place far away from them. And Christian doomsday extremists who think its a prerequisite for end times stuff.
yk, I never thought there'd be a day when I'd miss Gracie Abrams being our resident nepo baby (to dump on) and now, here I am praying for times like those
true, but Ed’s PR team is going to have to think long and hard about how to play this one, he and Taylor Swift are up there on the top of “you better not fuck up the money train”
It’s only going to get worse if he does nothing. At minimum, he’s getting booed when he next tours Europe. He either needs to make a public statement or cancel some dates.
There are enough Sheeran fans that are unaware of what is going on or totally indifferent. His "statement" about it all makes it pretty clear that they don't care about the current blowback or that it's really not registering enough to affect the tour.
I hope long term this affects him but I doubt this will impact the tour at all.
I know how good that hate boner feels but put it down for 2 seconds and look up who actually is making Ed do this; the billionaire Robert Kraft. Who is literally holding Ed's visa hostage if he doesn't do what he's told to do.
The whole thing sucks but Kraft is the bad guy here just as much, if not more so, than Ed.
Yeah I’ve been thinking Ed has been spineless but the outrage has been equating Ed to a genocide supporting scumbag, and very quiet about the billionaire who rallied the other rich folk into pressuring Ed over the issue
I think this often happens because we already know these billionaires are horrible people, that are enabling and accepting of this genocide. It’s when people we respected and assumed were good that let us down, we feel more affected and so more vitriol is going towards Ed.
That's a convenient scapegoat to pin this on Kraft more than Sheeran and his team. Sheeran's side very well could have just not addressed it but decided to put out the statement that they did. There's really no sympathy for Sheeran even if he's beholden to Kraft.
Unless you have some greater insights, Sheeran chose to associate with Kraft. It's not like he's bound to indentured servitude to the guy. People are taking some of the jabs at Sheeran too far but you're going too far to absolve him from his autonomy in this situation.
Edit: where is this whole thing about his visa coming from? Searching that didn't bring anything up.
This is too complex a matter to pin on one singular person, especially when the guy behind the curtains is the one that forced Ed to do this. Sure Ed coulda told him to fuck off, and that's on Ed, but the fact Kraft is not mentioned more in this is abhorrent. That's more what my gripe is, the fact that a goddamn billionaire is the root cause of this and all anyone can talk about is Ed.
The visa thing is because Ed isn't a citizen, he's here on an O-1 visa that can be revoked at any moment. A year ago he posted about moving to the US but he's still British at the end of the day. Basically there is nothing stopping the government from deciding he isn't playing nicely and can send him/his family packing.
It's fun to imagine but presumably at least 90% of the people buying tickets are doing so for Sheeran, so he'll either just do the show solo or (more likely) find some genocide-supporting act to open for him.
It's such fucking bullshit how many people are being duped into hating the wrong person here. Don't get me wrong Ed set himself up for a really stupid scenario but the one pulling the strings is Robert Kraft.
It's kinda scary how good billionaires are at manipulating public discourse regardless of your political affiliation.
Yeah, and the vast majority of people who buy tickets are not going to be swayed to not attend/ask for a refund because the openers are no longer on the card. They're there to see Sheeran, so short of him deciding to cancel or postpone shows, they will continue without a hitch.
I don’t think the opening acts are dropping in some attempt to hurt his wallet. No one thinks this is going to bankrupt Ed Sheeran. The openers are making decisions I would assume is in a way that allows them to live out their values and stay true to their morals.
Most people who go to these shows are not the same as chronically online redditors. I love going to concerts but it’s one of the few times I can escape the constant barrage of politics that happens in every day life. No one wants to see this shit at a concert. Especially from Macklemore who hasn’t been relevant in over 10 years.
Saying "music (and all art) is inherently political" is different than saying "all songs are explicitly and overtly about politics". It's baffling to me that so many people seem to fail to understand this.
most people don’t understand what “politics” is unless you frame it like a football match.
Politics is every law or action by your government, all of which affect your daily life.
The whole “keep politics out of it” is bullshit, the real statement is “keep your politics out of it”, they have been more than happy to keep their politics in everything for centuries
It's baffling to me that so many people seem to fail to understand this.
It's because they genuinely don't understand what "politics" is. They think it means discussing things that may make them uncomfortable like governmental policy, legislation, or politicians themselves. Anytime you have a group of humans together, you're inherently going to have "politics". I mean, for fucks sake, Respect by Aretha Franklin is literally a political song about feminism, the civil rights movement, and other major political events happening at the time.
Fuck The Police by NWA, Fortunate Son by Creedence Clearwater Revival, Fast Car by Tracy Chapman, Blowin' in the Wind by Bob Dylan. They are all political songs, because they're songs written about humans and how we interact with each other. Stepping back from the modern sense of "art", throughout history "art" was often commissioned by political or religious leaders as an example of their power. Then you get into the concept of what the artist decides to include or exclude; those are inherently political decisions because they hinge on the cultural values of the artist. Culture itself is political, driven by political decisions, political funding, political movements.
People these days love to pretend they're apolitical, but they're not. They're just cynical and don't like having to engage in uncomfortable topics.
No but it does look like performing and attending these events is turning into its own kind of "statement" that not everybody is going to want to make. Ed Sheeran clearly wants to straddle the fence but there's a point where not choosing a side becomes its own kind of choice whether you want it to or not.
Most of the people who bought tickets probably don’t even know about this, some will know and not care, and some will be pro Israel. It’s the same with JKR’s insane transphobia not tanking Harry Potter. A fuck tonne of people just aren’t plugged in or don’t care if they are.
Lol. This is a very niche corner of the internet you are in. 99% of the people that bought tickets for a Sheeran concert will either not know about Macklemore's absence or they won't care.
Its more that Ed himself has made his whole thing about not taking sides and proceeding at this point kind of looks like taking a side. I don't care about Sheeran one way or another and I know people aren't going for the openers.
Most people would wave it outside the stadium and then wrap it around their shoulders or hold it in front of them like a sign during the concert. Sounds like you haven’t been to many events honestly if you don’t know how people hold flags normally
What are you talking about? Activism doesn’t exist to make friends. You either know about something horrible going on and want to do something about it or you don’t. Those that know and don’t give a shit anyway aren’t going to suddenly care because you didn’t “irritate them.” I’m sure civil war was pretty “irritating” for many Americans but if that’s what was necessary to put an end to slavery then the disruption of the status quo was warranted.
Activism exists to persuade people that your cause is righteous. I have no idea how people have lost this idea. I can take a shit in your living room and call it activism if I want, but it's not going to make you join my cause. Being annoying is not an end goal
best case they aren't and everyone is a dramatic event that calls attention to the issue, the hypocrisy and the oligarchic power used to silence people who protest it.
It definitely won't have much impact there, I just wonder if it puts a dent in Sheeran's take no sides/avoid all controversy rep and he thinks it's easier to scrap them and come back in a year or two once it's blown over but you're probably right, most people have the attention span of a goldfish these days and it will just go away anyway.
Doubt the lack of an opening act could have that much of an effect, except maybe to those poor venue owners that won't get an extra break to sell more overpriced beer/cocktails.
Practically nobody outside of the Reddit bubble will care about a non-statement of someone trying to stay out of a political situation that has no relation to his job as a musician.
As someone who went to his concert in July.... nobody was there to see the opening acts. Heck, that's most concerts.
Two more opening acts have dropped out since Aaron Rowe this afternoon, it's becoming a bigger story than the "Reddit bubble". At some point Sheeran continuing with the shows becomes the political statement he doesn't want to make.
I agree it won't impact ticket sales or his core audience much but it may impact his carefully curated to this point reputation.

These shows are going to end up being cancelled, right?
