I will never understand "political differences don't have to end relationships". They say it like we're talking about having different favorite sports teams or types of pizza.

The "political differences" are accepting that your friend is a racist, transphobe/homophobe, fascist supporting piece of shit that believes that certain people don't deserve healthcare while happily paying taxes to support tax breaks for people who definitely don't need it, and to fund a nation's genocide.

There was a time where at least some fraction of people saw politics as a matter of policy decisions where we could not know for certain if a thing did or did not work until we gave it a go. In that time "differences of opinion" was a mature and normal thing to do and still otherwise be friends with similar interests in other areas of life... That said, that shit is long fucking gone, we are in some kind of whacked out ideological hellscape where we are trying to erase/punish entire classes of people for existing. You can't be be a supporter of the president at this point without being complicit to the horrible shit hes presided over. Disappointed in Em for the lack of principals here.

When was the era that right wingers were trying to treat minority groups fairly?

I ain't saying there wasn't society wide shittyness but the brazenness and unwillingness to consider facts is worse than ever.

The problem is being a decent, genuine kind person has somehow become a political identity. Equality has become politics, anti-genocide has become politics.

The powers that be have done such a good job making people think those things are political differences. No, someone wanting to eradicate trans or gay people has nothing to do with politics, and I won't pretend it does. If I stop engaging with a person over "political" differences, it's really because they're a terrible person.

someone wanting to eradicate trans

There is no one actually trying to eliminate trans people. There are people who don't think it's appropriate for children to be able to decide to transition genders and that trans-women competing in women's sports is unfair. These are policy positions and are not advocating for getting rid of anyone who is trans.

Iā€™m pretty sure a certain current president said something along the lines of ā€œthere will be no more trans people if I win the midtermsā€ very recently.

He declared transgender people terrorists and said he was going to find them and kill them.

Wha page does he say that?

u/ZoominAlong 14d ago

Page 2, it's literally right there.Ā

Dude, fucking Trump posted an announcement to the goddamn White House website declaring "liberals, radical trans people and islamists" as enemies of the state. He ended it with "We will find you and we will kill you." This was back in MAY.Ā

Fuck off with the idea Trump doesn't want trans people dead.Ā

And before you think I'm lying, here's the fucking link direct from the White House.Ā

Yeah, "supporting political differences" is supposed to be like... "I think we need a 2% tax increase to help fix potholes, but my buddy wants a 2% cut so he can afford to renovate his kitchen" not about what type of person is allowed to exist

Or just really, really stupid/brainwashed by Fox.

If they are voting the party that promotes those things it really does not matter if they don't see themselves as bigoted. They are supporting bigots.

14

u/mxjxs91 15d ago

Couldn't have said it better.

11

u/pawj14 15d ago

Ding ding ding! If you support the bigots, what do you think that makes you?

-13

u/Throwaway122384848 15d ago

They donā€™t see it like that though. I donā€™t care for Trump but plenty of people I work with and many of our friends/family do even if they donā€™t agree with everything he does. There are also plenty of people in these same spaces that are super left-leaning. I myself lean republican but happen to be a huge fan of Mamdani and what heā€™s doing for the city.

In the real world, people across the entire spectrum coexist just fine. The ones who donā€™t have serious problems regulating their emotions and acting professional. It may not be ideal, but itā€™s best to accept that people of all types exist in this world for better or for worse.

You mean like... wearing a red hat to display your political beliefs?

You're right. We are FAR past things just being about politics.

-1

u/Aero_Rising 15d ago

Shockingly people don't agree with those they vote for on every single issue. Racist, transphobe, and fascist have also lost all meaning as words in this context because people like you throw them around just because you don't like someone ignoring their actual meaning. Wanting the US to actually enforce removal orders and not have the highest undocumented resident population relative to total population isn't racist it's a pretty commonly held position. Thinking that trans-women competing in women's sports is unfair is a view held by 70% of the country.

u/United_Intention_323 15d ago

They usually arenā€™t those things.

8

u/TheSaxonPlan 15d ago

But they're okay supporting people who are and that's hardly better.

-9

u/United_Intention_323 15d ago

Youā€™re assuming the worst on very nuanced issues. Itā€™s irresponsible.

11

u/ReturnOfTheKeing 15d ago

There's so much nuance to be had by ICE sending children to random countries in africa that they have no connection to with or without their parents. It's shameful that you think this is something that's debatable

-7

u/United_Intention_323 15d ago

The nuance is saying you supported enforcing immigration laws without going that far. It really isnā€™t that complicated. Youā€™re running on pure emotion.

6

u/ReturnOfTheKeing 15d ago

Well it's happening. You don't get to pretend that the people you vote for don't represent you because you think they went "that far".

0

u/United_Intention_323 15d ago

You also donā€™t support everything people do. This isnā€™t a complicated concept.

8

u/TheSaxonPlan 15d ago

The elected parts of the administration have been very clear on their plans from the beginning, before they were elected. It's what they ran on. If you were surprised, you weren't paying attention.

0

u/United_Intention_323 15d ago

Refer to something specific.

8

u/ReturnOfTheKeing 15d ago

"mass deportations now", project 2025. Now it's clear that you're just a sad little sea lion

2

u/United_Intention_323 15d ago

Enforcing the immigration laws isnt particularly controversial

u/Weakonomics 15d ago

Nuanced. Right....

1

u/United_Intention_323 15d ago

Yeah. All of the controversial national issues are nuanced.

-4

u/mailslot 15d ago

Youā€™ve let conservatives become your boogeyman and are being played by the same political strategy that has served to divide this country since its inception.

ā€œTo fund a nationā€™s genocideā€¦ā€ America was founded on genocide.
