i really dont understand what they think they are accomplishing with putting this shit on their vehicles

It's also tourist season. They're trying to be hateful, likely with the intent of making someone from out of town (locals too) feel that hate.

In other words, they have such little moral fiber, and so little to occupy their time, that they need to go out of their way to cause others misery because it's the only thing that makes them feel better about themselves.

I agree. The sign says honk if you agree, but I bet $100 they get more enjoyment from upsetting rank strangers than hearing from those who agree with them.
