Celebrity Names What do Mary Berry, Randy Rainbow, Paul Hollywood, and boxer Tyson Fury have in common?

Those are all their birth names bestowed by their parents 🤯Two more that surprise me: Madonna and Prince. ā€œWhy is that remarkable?ā€ you may ask- they sound more like they’d be stage names to me. Any more unlikely government names of celebrities you can think of?

Character/Fictional Names Alternate spellings for the name Mairi?

So I have a mildly aggravating problem, that comes from years and years of not realizing I liked a mispronunciation. A while back I read the name Mairi in subtitles - though it was pronounced as My-ree - and loved it. What I didn't know then was that the name is actually a Scottish form for Mary, and pronounced as such, and the source material took it at face value the same as I did. Fast forward multiple years later, as I am working on a novel with that name for the protagonist, and finally learning that a name I've used for this story for years, and grown attached to, doesn't match the way it's spelled.

It's ultimately not the end of the world, but I would like to find some way to keep the pronunciation while matching the spelling as close as possible, if it even is possible. Any advice?

(As a side note, the novel is in a fantasy setting, and an elf protagonist being named Mary would 100% be out of place.)

Baby Names A sister for Goldy: Tzipi, Zissel, Etty, or Reizel?

We already have a baby named Goldy, and we are expecting a second girl! She has a twin brother but we're going to choose the names separately since we want to pick the name we love most for each.

We both love the really old fashioned names for girls that are often from Yiddish, the grandma names, and all of these names would honor someone in our family. We also love Zlatka but we don't want matching meanings with her sister.

I'm definitely an overthinker so I find it really hard to choose names. So it's nice to see what other people think who probably aren't considering every single possible aspect of every name I come up with šŸ˜…

We live in New York. Although we aren't as religious as our name choices would make us sound, we are lucky that most of our community would still be familiar with Yiddish so it's nothing strange or complicated!

Discussion Reese, Freda, or Clarke in New Zealand?

Hi! I’m an international student living in New Zealand and choosing an English name for university and future work.
Which of these three names, Reese, Freda(Frida), and Clarke, would sound most natural for a woman in New Zealand? Are any of them unusual, awkward, or likely to cause confusion?
I’d appreciate honest opinions, especially from people who live in New Zealand. Thanks!

I live in a country where one sex's name cannot be given to people from the other sex, but I' curious what were the most surprising traditionally girl names you've met with on men.

Baby Names People keep saying that the name I picked out for my daughter is an ā€œold persons nameā€

I’m six months pregnant with a baby girl 🩷 and my boyfriend and I have picked out the name Rosalie Claire. I’ve gotten a few positive responses to her name but there’s a few family members that keep insisting that it’s an old persons name or that it sounds too French šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø. They keep insisting that I consider changing it which I’m not playing on doing.

Baby Names Names ending with -etta?

Always loved the name Etta but don’t like how short it is. Recently I heard the name Coretta and I really like it. I’ve heard it before as it is the name of Coretta Scott King but it just hit different this time, probably because I heard it being used not in association with a well known person.

Anyways do you guys have any other names that end in -etta? I know Henrietta as well but don’t really like it.

Baby Names Brother for Arthur and Kathryn

We’re expecting our third baby and don’t know the sex yet, so we’re looking for both boy and girl ideas.

Our older kids are Arthur ā€œArtā€ Alan and Kathryn ā€œKitā€ Rae. We tend to like classic, established names, but we really like having a distinctive nickname that isn’t always the obvious choice.

For a boy a couple names we’ve been considering are:
Thomas — Tip
Walter — Walt

For a girl, our current favorite is Charlotte Elizabeth, called Lettie.

The boy middle name will most likely be Jenkins, which is a family name. Our last name is short and one syllable.
We’re not really looking for modern or invented names. We like names that feel traditional and substantial, but we love the idea of a nickname that is a little less expected, like Lettie for Charlotte or Tip for Thomas.

What names would you suggest for either sex? Bonus points for classic names with cool or unusual nicknames that would fit well with Arthur and Kathryn.

Baby Names Brother for Archer James

• Upvotes

Name suggestions for a brother to Archer ā€œArchieā€ James. 2 syllable last name, starts with M.

Prefer classic names like Jack, Henry, Charles, George, Francis - but also like less popular surname style like Archer, Shepherd, Conrad, Foster, Warner added bonus if it can provide a cute nn option when younger ie Charlie, Frankie, Shep, Connie, etc.

Jack has been my top choice but having a tough time pairing with a middle I like. Open to all suggestions.

Name these twins!

Congratulations, you're having twins! One girl and one boy. Give them names based on each of these parameters:

1) Named after plants

2) One-syllable names

3) Begin with a vowel sound, end with a consonant sound

4) Literary or pop-culture names

5) Wild card (no parameters- just whatever you actually like!)

Baby Names Help on female names that remind me of summer (Hispanic)

I'm having my first daughter after two sons and she is due mid July. I absolutely love the vibes summer (both the name and season) give me and I want to honour that by naming my daughter something like that.

A few insights that I need to give is that I am from a Hispanic background and my husband has been thinking on Hispanic names because the names we gave our sons were very "unhispanic" if that makes sense.

I also like the name "June" if that gives you some idea on this.

If you don't have any names, I would love if you could choose between June or Summer!

Name List Names in used books

Part of what I really love about buying used books is the bits and pieces of a life people often leave behind in them. Shopping lists, train tickets, receipts -- it feels intimate and sweet to have a small meaningless token from somebody else who I'll never know.

Lately, I've started buying used children's books, and I similarly enjoy when there are messages written in the inside cover. I especially like looking at the names of the children the book are for and the people who gave it to them. Here are the names I've found so far, in no particular order. These are mostly baby board books, although a few are early reader chapter books

recipient line:

Camdyn

Monty

Ella

Ellie

Kiley

Brody

Thomas (the message on this one was dated June 2001)

signatory line (if included)

Aunt Nancy and Uncle Ed

Debbie

GiGi

Uncle Mike

Discussion I have never met someone with my rare name. I’m curious if you have?

So my first name is Mingan. I’ve never met anyone else with it and always wondered if I’m the only one (It’s indigenous Canadian so there’s not much chance for it to appear outside my region). But there is an archipelago named Mingan which is a relatively popular national park, so I figured some might have been inspired by it.
So, do you know anyone with my name, or heard of anyone with it? Let me know!

Baby Names Where did ā€œRomillyā€ come from?

I really like Romilly for a girl name, but I typically like names with a strong meaning, recognised in different languages and with a bit of history. For context my other child is called Casper. Is Romilly traditionally a name, where’s it from? I’m struggling to find its history. Or is it just a ā€œtrendā€ā€¦?
