What you mean it won't generate enough to run a nation. Wales in the 5th largest energy (electricity) producer in the world. We generate approx double of what we consume.

Money!!!!!!! Not electricity. Wales won’t generate enough money to be self sustaining.

Is electricity not sold for money?

I really don't understand what your getting at here?

So, looking on Wikipedia, the UK as a whole is the world's 17th largest energy producer so how in hell could just Wales be the 5th largest?

https://committees.parliament.uk/committee/162/welsh-affairs-committee/news/146982/what-are-wales-renewable-energy-opportunities/

Wales is the 5th in the world. It uses approx half of what it produces. Whilst put in with the rest of the UK the figure dilutes as England (for example) uses far more than it produces. Alot of wales electricity is used by England, so is the water from our reservoirs.

Ok, thank you for the link but that doesn't back you up. The claim it makes is that Wales is the fifth largest exporter, not the fifth largest producer. However, the figure of around 15Twh exported shows it not to be even close to the fifth largest exporter. Could they have meant per capita maybe?

It's what the uk government states on its page.

The UK govt could state more people live in Wales than any other country in the world but would you accept it? Just Google the largest energy exporters in the world and you will see over five countries export more energy than Wales even produces IN TOTAL, so regardless of what the govt website says how can Wales export more than it actually produces?

Edited to add: also looks like your info is ten years out of date and Wales barely produces what it uses today: https://eciu.net/analysis/reports/welsh-electricity-independence

Here is a key chart from the report. Big surplus in 2016 when the claim was met but it was a one-off and that has almost dwindled to nothing

I was unaware that this was outdated info - thank you for the correction.

Wales is 5th based on its excess generation NOT on total.

Wales generates so much because the UK funded the production for the UKs energy needs.

So by your what your saying if it was based on total, not excess, wales would be higher on the list?

My mother only makes excellent cakes because I bought the ingredients πŸ™„. Wales generates so much electricity due to the landscape. We have alot of mountains that are perfect for wind turbines. Wales has lots of natural resources which have been exploited by our neighbouring country for years (eg iron, coal, slate).

What always confuses me though is although we are one of the world's top exporters of electricity, we pay on average more for our electricity and standing charges than England. Some of us in wales pay higher charges than London!!!
