Mod Announcement We've recently updated our policies on posts lacking commentary or deemed to be low-effort - please read!

Hi everyone!

Recently we’ve been getting a lot of posts of people showing off physical media (vinyl, CDs, etc.). While we do still welcome these sorts of submissions, some of these posts don’t have much content besides the photos included.

We’ve always encouraged media/image posts to contain some sort of user commentary to encourage discussion, but from here onwards, we do want to actively enforce this more than we did before.

In terms of what to add in terms of commentary, we aren’t necessarily expecting extremely verbose write-ups. Memories, opinions, reviews, etc. that might contribute to discussion or appreciation for the album(s) being discussed are all appreciated. This can be in the form of body text, comments on your own post, etc.

If your post is lacking this, we’ll generally request that you repost it with some sort of added commentary.

I’d also like to mention some other things we’ve been discussing internally regarding post guidelines:

  • This isn’t really a subreddit-specific issue, but please don’t assume the people viewing your post are automatically familiar with the subject. If you’re posting an image of a band/artist, please outline who is depicted there in some form. This also goes for album covers that do not have titles/names visibly printed on them.
  • Posts sharing lists made on websites like topsters.org, tiermaker.com, and my9albums should go to their respective subreddits (if applicable) instead.
  • Please don’t crosspost activities from subreddit games (e.g. r/AlignmentChartFills) here; again, keep these to their respective subreddits.

That’s about it! Feel free to ask questions in the comments or reach out to the mods here via Modmail if you need any further clarification.

PS: the report function helps us identify posts that might potentially break rules, and we do encourage people to use it.

An album that brought me to tears

Post image

I rarely cry, but this album hit me differently. Every track carries its own kind of sadness. Especially the parts where Wyatt starts singing what sound like meaningless words. It feels like he’s reached a point where there’s nothing left to say, where the reality around him starts to fall apart and nothing can be done about it anymore. There’s something deeply unsettling and heartbreaking about those moments.
And Alifib is just an incredible song.

Discussion Is modern progressive rock overshadowed by the legends of the 70s?

I've always been struck by how, when progressive rock is discussed, the conversation usually returns to the same bands from the seventies: Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Camel, Gentle Giant, and others.

One example that I find particularly interesting is Wobbler, especially with their album From Silence to Somewhere (2017). It's an album that brings together many of the elements that made the pro so appealing.

Is it that progressive rock became so closely tied to its golden age that any current band ends up being compared to its predecessors? Or perhaps the public simply considers that sound to be...

Personally, I think that constantly looking to the past can cause us to miss out on excellent albums that are being released decades later.

What do you think? Do you believe that today's progressive rock bands live in the shadow of the legends of the seventies? Which modern albums do you think deserve to be in the same conversation Those were some old cult bands ?

Chicago Transit Authority

• Upvotes

Takin a trip down memory lane. How is it Chicago is never mentioned on this sub Reddit? Their first two albums, both double albums by the way, very very progressive. “Transit Authority” . And “Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon” on the 2nd Album, 12 minuets written in a classical 4 movement format (only the first three minuets were ever played on the radio). Terry’s contributions can only be described as progressive.

In 1969 and 1970 , in sort of a subtle way , Terry may have been the most progressive guitarist on the planet.

Go back and take a deep dive in the first two albums, and no doubt you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Even Jimi said about Terry “… he does things on guitar I’ll never be able to do…”

Danny Fichelscher and Renate Knaup (Popol Vuh/Amon Düül II) joined The Lindau Project on stage, a band from Regensburg (Germany) who re-imagine the music of Florian Fricke/Popol Vuh.

John Weinzierl (Amon Düül II) also climbed the stage a while later. Frank Fiedler (Popol Vuh) filmed the evening.

Who knows this rather obscure (?) band Hasse Froberg & Musical Companion. Is this just a simple Marillion rip-off (which in itself was a Genesis rip-off)

I've always really loved early fleetwood mac, and although it may not be pure progressive rock, it's an album I's definitely recommend to anyone who likes prog. especially since it also has Peter Braden's (camel) and Snowy White (floyd and thin lizzy) on it

Advent - Maginot Line (1996)

🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵

From their debut album!!! An American neo prog group in the spirit of Gentle Giant. Amazing song writing/composition skills! Unfortunately this album has some muddy mixing so it's hard to hear some of the excellent keyboard work at times, but the music is so good, you just gotta live with it!!

"The Maginot Line, an array of defenses that France built along its border with Germany in the 1930s, was designed to prevent an invasion. Built at a cost that possibly exceeded $9 billion in today’s dollars, the 280-mile-long line included dozens of fortresses, underground bunkers, minefields, and gun batteries. The Maginot Line was fortified with reinforced concrete and 55 million tons of steel embedded deep into the earth. It was designed to withstand heavy artillery fire, poison gas and whatever else the Germans could throw against it.

“The Maginot Line was a technological marvel, far and away the most sophisticated and complex set of fortifications built up to that time,” William Allcorn wrote in his 2003 book The Maginot Line 1928–45.

Nevertheless, after World War II erupted, the fortified border that was supposed to serve as France’s salvation instead became a symbol of a failed strategy. Leaders had focused upon countering the tactics and technology of past wars, and failed to prepare for the new threat from a blitzkreig of fast-moving armored vehicles.

Instead of being stymied by the Maginot Line, German forces went around it, driving their tanks through a wilderness area in neighboring Belgium that the French wrongly assumed would be impenetrable."

What would be the best keyboard to buy to emulate a lot of the 60s and 70s prog sounds on a somewhat tight budget <1000 USD

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this. I know this is a pretty vague question but I’ve been researching for a few hours and am just gonna ask people here because I give up.

The new album talks about Mars and various topics related to Mars. One of those topics is Lakes. Here comes the fun fact. Don't know what inspired him and where he got the word "Jezero", but in my language (Croatian) "jezero" literally means lake. So is it a coincidence or not? - maybe, i don't know. Anyway that's it.

Anekdoten ,Too Good to Remain Such an Unknown Cult Band?

I've always found Anekdoten's place in progressive rock fascinating. They're well known among dedicated prog fans, yet remain relatively obscure to the general public, almost like a well-kept secret within the genre.

Albums like Vemod and Nucleus have a distinctive identity, combining distorted bass, Mellotron, haunting instrumental passages, and a balance of melancholy and aggression that sets them apart from much of progressive rock.

It's impossible to discuss Anekdoten without mentioning King Crimson, especially given their influence on the band's early work. However, I think calling them mere imitators would be unfair. Anekdoten took elements of experimental prog and shaped them into a sound of their own.
