Caribou abundance is predicted to decline by 42% for every 1% increase in forestry roads in their habitat, and the Foster Arm logging could create 30kms of road access through the Columbia North herd's habitat.

The broader Foster Arm region is one of the last large areas of intact low-elevation old-growth left.

"Infill development is becoming increasingly common across Winnipeg, and while more housing is genuinely needed to address affordability, it is coming at a serious cost to our urban tree canopy. Winnipeg's canopy currently covers just 17% of the city. The City's own goal is to reach 24% by 2065.

We are already behind and mature trees that take 50 to 100 years to grow are coming down with no accountability and no replacement.

These trees are not decorative. A well-treed neighbourhood can be up to 4 degrees cooler than one without trees. That is the urban heat island effect. When concrete and pavement replace canopy, entire neighbourhoods get measurably hotter.

Trees also filter air, absorb stormwater, reduce flooding pressure on aging infrastructure, and studies show a 10% increase in canopy cover is associated with a 12% decrease in crime. Winnipeg already risks losing nearly half of its total tree population to disease over the next 40 years. We cannot afford to also lose them to development loopholes."

“The Pacific Northwest is home to the world's largest temperate rainforest, and now more than ever it's under threat from the timber industry.

The effort to repeal the Roadless Rule is threatening to open up thousands of acres of old-growth forests to logging, while old growth on non-federal lands in Southeast Alaska is already being targeted. Unlike federally owned lands, these areas can be directly purchased and protected by the public.

That is what the Ancient Forest Fund is designed to do. Our initial goal is to raise $2 million to secure the permanent protection of an at-risk ancient forest from a willing seller in Southeast Alaska.”

At-risk, biodiverse old growth deferrals are being logged anyway. It's a myth that the current government is stopping 'access to fibre.' They seem to be letting everything be logged and with the new 'Working Forest' proposal even more will be logged. Without these intact forests we get much less rain, more drought and worse wildfires. Make it make sense.

"In the shadows of the Monashee mountains’ tallest peaks, 120 hectares of these old and ancient forests are slated to be logged. In the last few months, these forests have simply been removed from deferrals which identified them as some of the most at-risk and biodiverse forests in the province. We’re here just outside of the boundary of the Foster Creek Protected Area along the Kinbasket reservoir, roughly halfway between the Mica dam north of Revelstoke and Valemount. 

It’s one of the most egregious proposals I’ve ever laid eyes on, and the impacts don’t justify the marginal economics of the proposal. 

Not only do the proposed blocks overlap the Technical Advisory Panel’s recommended deferrals by over 100 hectares. We know from caribou censuses and collaring efforts that this area and the proposed cutblocks are used, occupied Caribou habitat. It’s part of a larger 6 square kilometre old and ancient forest patch that extends into the Foster Arm Protected Area. The larger Howard-Foster to Encampment area is likely one of the largest intact areas of low-elevation old growth left for the Columbia North Caribou herd. Broader, undisturbed areas of old forests like these allow Caribou to spatially separate themselves from predators, and create vital foraging habitat that contains critical early winter foods like falsebox. These large areas of intact low-elevation old forests are extremely rare in BC today. 

The proposed blocks are composed of 350-367 year old cedar and hemlock forests according to the provincial Vegetation Resource Inventory. BCTS confirmed that the blocks were field-verified and did in fact meet the criteria as valued old-growth forests and deferrals, but that they were going to auction them off anyway as they had already invested in layout for the blocks. They sold the blocks in July."

I'm sitting at KV Danapur Cantt right now watching an excavator uproot 15-20 foot mature, healthy trees near the main gate to clear space for the road extension/Patna Metro work.

​It’s completely disheartening to watch. What makes this worse is that KV Danapur Cantt has a massive campus with tons of open green ground just yards away. These trees could easily be root-ball squeezed, lifted, and transplanted deeper inside the campus with basic tree transplantation equipment.

​In so many places globally (and even in a few select Indian metro projects), mature trees along right-of-ways are relocated rather than outright crushed. Here, the default response is still to just smash through them with an excavator bucket.

​Development and public transport like Patna Metro are necessary, but when did infrastructure progress become completely mutually exclusive with preserving existing urban greenery?

​Has anyone seen any local civic initiatives or forest department mandates pushing PMRC/contractors for tree transplantation during the metro construction around Patna?

Critically Endangered Garry Oak ecosystem at the Northfield Bluffs in Nanaimo needs your voice! 🎙️

There will be a Public Hearing on Thursday, September 24th, 2026, starting at 7:00 p.m. in the Shaw Auditorium at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre at 80 Commercial Street, Nanaimo, BC to consider proposed amendments to “City of Nanaimo Zoning Bylaw 2011, No. 4500”. What does this mean? Council would like to rezone two large properties which contain Critically Endangered Garry Oak ecosystem plant communities, from Single Dwelling Residential (R1) and Light Industrial (I2) to Light Industrial (I2) which allows an industrial office space, to help facilitate a light industrial development… It may seem complicated, but this means the public has an opportunity to voice our thoughts on the overall plan, and notably, the environmental assessment:

1. There are sensitive Garry Oak ecosystem plant communities present which were not comprehensively delineated or classified during the environmental assessment, let alone photographed at the most basic level. This should be enough to pause everything.
2. Upland areas where Garry Oak plant communities are present were only surveyed twice, eight years apart, focusing just on rare species. This does not provide an accurate representation of what is currently present, or the associated ecological values, to the council or the community. One rare species is present on neighbouring lands, but was not listed as a species that could be present, which is incredibly concerning.
3. Garry Oak ecosystem plant communities are described as potentially occurring on site in patches, and historically present. Word choice matters, and this reads as intentionally reductive. Extensive Garry Oak ecosystem communities are present, some of the largest and most intact left in the City of Nanaimo. You’d have to deliberately ignore them to not notice.
4. The official community plan provides guidance to the city, however, it is not a rigid mandate. Once we know better, we need to be able to pivot and adapt. We cannot lose this globally rare landscape.

Planting more trees but most importantly not cutting down our existing urban trees unless they are found to be dangerous.

Passionné de nature et fervent défenseur des écosystèmes, je me pose depuis quelque temps cette question : comment mener à bien une mission de conservation lorsque la situation sécuritaire se dégrade ?

This new documentary blew me away.

It’s an essential watch for anyone interested in British Columbia’s forestry industry, whether it’s from an ecological or economical standpoint.

Agricultural residues and other non destructive biomass collection can't possibly scale for Japan's use. Never mind other countries who are also ramping this up as a "Green" alternative. Wood pellets are not the way. Even if they \~break even on carbon the ecological damage including flooding and deadly landslides are unacceptable collateral damage.

Plantations are green deserts. Better than bare soil but nothing like real forests when it comes to supporting the water cycle.
