Resources / Literature Frequently Asked Questions- r/schizophrenia
Welcome to r/schizophrenia!
Our subreddit rules are in the sidebar, we ask that you read and follow them. Feel free to post anything on-topic that does not violate these rules. We have a relatively comprehensive overview of how our rules are applied in reality available on the Rule Clarifications Wiki page.
For those who are new here, we have our Community Notices page which we would suggest users read. We also have our Creator Wiki for our participating artists and content creators- all of them have a diagnosed psychotic disorder.
Many first-time posters to this subreddit are concerned that they might be developing schizophrenia or they are concerned about other people who have- or may have- schizophrenia. We have resources available to answer these questions contained within the comments; if your question is completely answered by the information already given, it will be removed.
If you are here asking about advice for a family member, asking if a family member has schizophrenia or venting about a loved one with schizophrenia- it will be removed, and you will be directed to the appropriate community for that type of post, r/SchizoFamilies. Please read the rules of their subreddit before posting.
Mental health is complex. No symptom of schizophrenia is specific to schizophrenia alone, and there are many more common causes of those symptoms- especially in the prodromal stage. If you are experiencing an emergency, please call your doctor or local emergency services. We have a compendium of Crisis Lines available and may suggest r/SuicideWatch if you are experiencing suicidal thoughts and would like the most prompt attention.

Opinion / Thought / Idea / Discussion How much do you cry?
I always read people with this diagnosis/on antipsychotics say they very rarely or never cry. I cry a LOT, tears come very very easily, much more easily than they used to, and I feel weird because of this. I do not feel as though I have strong emotions; it's just that tears are never far away, even when there isn't much emotion actually behind them. I'm on 20 mg Haldol and 42 mg Caplyta, among other (non-antipsychotic) meds.
Anybody else or is it JUST me?

Art I live with schizoaffective disorder and I paint my illness. This one is called "Awake": the hidden beauty of vulnerability.
For a long time, I saw my vulnerability as a weakness to hide. With this painting, I wanted to show the opposite: what's fragile and raw is often where the most beautiful things are hiding.
What do you see when you look at it?

Progress / Good News ☀️ Ended up back on meds full time to manage my schizophrenia
After a nearly 10 year long stint of trying to avoid the pills and being on and off them. I have tried every alternative method besides maybe keto diet to fix it. The alternative ways are kinda not working for me. I’ve been on the pills for awhile—and while they make me fat as shit—I can function a little better. At least the voices and hallucinations are subsiding and I can actually talk and control my body again. This has been an insane journey for reals.

Opinion / Thought / Idea / Discussion Has anyone successfully transitioned back to work after being on disability for a long time 5 or more years?
Hey friends. I’ve been on disability since 2021 but I think I’ve recovered enough to work. I’m still hearing voices and I wasn’t hearing voices before going on disability, but overall I’m fairly stable and I think I can handle a low stress job. The problem I’m having is this big 5 year gap on my resume, and multiple short tenures about a year each due to psychosis episodes which makes me doesn’t seem too loyal or reliable.
My question to you is, have any of you successfully transitioned back to work after a long absence? I’m currently working with the ticket to work program of disability to try to go back to work.

Introduction / New Member 👋 Diagnosed, but still convinced it's real?
Hello! 36M here, have been dealing with schizophrenia for about 10 years now. Even after the length of time where nothing actually happens to me, I'm sitting here about to cry just thinking about posting this...
What are some ways you've found to work, where when voices are commanding, or hurtful, or even something that makes you feel like you're in complete danger, to calm back down?
I wake up in the middle of the night froze with fear unless I turn on a flashlight to use the restroom..
I watch cars, people, very closely everywhere I go... It's starting to bleed into my personal life where I'm questioning if my wife, mother in law, father in law, and every adult is closing in on me.
what.. do... I.. Do?

Opinion / Thought / Idea / Discussion Addition to the comfort uniform
So I posted on here about my comfort uniform, and many of you were in agreement with me. I said in the post that I just can't do jeans anymore. Well, I was wrong. I found some pull-on jeans at Macy's. I get that they're probably for older women, but I don't care, they're stretchy and have a flat waistband like my leggings and joggers. They're a bit long so I cuff them, but really they're as comfy as leggings with a more public-appropriate look.

Medication Does 15mg olanzapine make you dumber or affect cognitive functioning?
I feel like my medicine has made me dumber. I cannot follow simple logical statements and find it hard to think deep about a subject. I was definitely able think a bit deeper when I was not on medication. Do you find that antipsychotics affect your cognitive abilities as well?

Seeking Support I‘ve become a victim of extreme ridicule
It‘s not Schizophrenia, someone is purposely ridiculing me. Since I‘ve been diagnosed there have been signs popping up everywhere in my city. Usually the places I go. It‘s advertisement for some sort of children’s show with a unicorn on them. Called „FurziPups“. It started where I used to live. Hung up on lanterns like an add for political parties before a vote. I moved recently, but the advertisement has now followed me to my home. That means they stretch across the entire city.
I don’t know how to talk about this. Every thing I imagine saying sounds like I‘m delusional, and I think that’s the whole point. I am a victim of someone with the means to spread terrible things about me. I am very scared. I‘m not imagining this. I feel like nobody can help me escape this. What can I do?
I‘ll added a picture of said add above.

Seeking Support Another person and a computer speak out of my mouth.
Antipsychotics are no good to stop this. I have computer equipment implanted in my body. Anyone else going through this? I can't work, I can't function. Any advice?

Hallucinations / Delusions Thc and schizophrenia
Am I making up my illness because weed doesn't effect me in any way. Like it doesn't even get me high, it's the same feeling as smoking cigarettes. Most people who post on here say to stay away from anything phycoactive to avoid phycosis. But I am heavily medicated so that could be stopping it. I just q ant to know why weed doesn't effect me

Progress / Good News ☀️ so grateful for every step toward relief
Schizophrenia can feel so heavy, lonely, and overwhelming. I want to be realistic: there are no perfect solutions, no 100% quick fixes, and recovery is rarely linear. So many people are still quietly struggling or suffering behind the scenes every single day, even when it’s completely invisible to the outside world.
But precisely because this journey is so tough, I feel gratitude whenever I see someone find even a fraction of genuine relief and stability. Every bit of progress is a huge victory.
To anyone currently feeling a bit better: I am so deeply happy for you. And to anyone still fighting in the middle of the storm to get there: I see you, and I hold so much hope that you find your relief soon.

Hallucinations / Delusions Thought insertion and broadcasting delusion
Struggling with the delusion that I can speak telepathically (broadcasting) with family members that claim they don't want me to know it's real because they're worried how I'd react (obviously their real counterparts don't know about the delusion or what the hell I'd be talking about). They also react to thoughts I don't control (insertion) that are intrusive, shocking, and often offensive.
I don't know how to break the delusion. It's realistic to the point where every time I thought something would prove it's not real there always ends up being an explanation that somehow makes it make sense.
Anyone else figure out how to overcome it? I can sometimes control what they say that sometimes helps. The biggest stressor is saying something that makes me look bad or seem like I did something wrong, I end up arguing with myself over it.

Opinion / Thought / Idea / Discussion Were you able to notice something was wrong before you got diagnosed?
I felt that I had special powers from God that no one else had, but I didn’t think something was wrong with me. Just that something was different, and people couldn’t see and hear what I saw/heard.
I wonder how common it is?

Seeking Support Input Appreciated
How the fuck do you stop bombing every relationship into oblivion. I feel like I can't go without a week where the fucking gauntlet of voices bombard me with every possible degrading paranoia inducing bullshit I could be subjected to. Literally anytime I try to make any lasting relationship it just lasts as long as I manage to keep a grip on my voices. Which the furthest I've managed is a couple years before eventually having a psychotic episode. Are we all fucked forever or am I just cosmical levels of stupid and incapable and need like electrocution therapy

Research / Study [Mod Approved] Looking for survey participants - Schizophrenia and Psychosis related representation within animation
Hi everyone,
I'm an animation student currently working on my undergraduate thesis about the representation of schizophrenia and psychosis symptoms within animation. My research specifically focuses on whether animated media continues to uphold negative stereotypes or subverts them compared to live action media, along with assessing how the media can reinforce pre-existing stereotypes affecting those who have schizophrenia/psychosis and how general audiences perceive these specific mental health disorders.
Everyone deserves to have fair and accurate representation, and this survey is a way for you to voice your thoughts and opinions about the current state of schizophrenia and psychosis representation and what can be done better.
Anyone is welcome to participate as long as you're 18+ and all survey participants will remain anonymous. There is also an option to withdraw your survey data if you wish to do so, (contact information will be provided within the Survey Statement and Survey Disclosure to withdraw your data).
The link to my survey can also be found here. However, I advise that you may please read my Survey Statement over here, so you are well informed about the nature of my survey and my thesis topic before proceeding any further.
This survey is open from the current date of this post until November 10th 2026.

Seeking Support How do you cope
How do you cope with lesser ability to feel. With the question, why did this happen to me. What is the point if I’m not able to live normally and fully feel everything that life is suppose to make us feel. 😟

Advice / Encouragement Now how do I use this outside of staying in my front porch
I now have a new resting face. I look perpetually pissed. It’s stopped my whiplash of emotions every time a hallucination occurs, highly recommend for those with thought broadcasting or just in general.
