Grossest thing on shameless?

For me it was when Tami was going through their kitchen and showed how filthy their cleaning scrub/sponge was, and how they claimed to clean it.

What happened to Fiona's job at the end of Season 1?

I know that this is probably bad writing or something but remember how at the end of Season 1 there was this character Jasmine Hollander who offered Fiona a job as an accountant in her husband's company. The last episode of Season 1 literally ends with Fiona going to Jasmine at her husband's company and sitting down at a desk and Jasmine brings out some paper work. I always thought that this scene implies that she took the job.

But then in Season 2, she's working as a waitress in a club. So what happened to her job as an accountant? Is it ever explained? Or did I get something wrong?

Edit: Btw, I'm not sure the job Jasmine offered her was "accountant". I remember it that way but it might've been just some office/desk/administrative job

I just watched shameless for the first time and while there was a lot I predicted correctly about what was going to happen, this is one part i got wrong.

I thought they were gonna move in together and “be a family” cause thats what Debbie wanted. Even if the young homeless woman couldn’t afford an apartment, Debbie was going to get a place for just her and Franny anyway, so she could have offered them to stay with her for free until she had enough or even just as a trial run to take them off the streets for a few nights. The only downside would be her history with drugs but Franny is left alone with Frank a decent amount anyways.

But i guess if that happened Debbie wouldn’t have been able to throw a huge fit over it , what can you do. Writers probs did this on purpose for the irony

Mickey and Ian’s relationship should NOT be romanticized

I’m not sure if this is a hot take or if lots of other people have thought this, but I’m watching Shameless for the first time in my life with my girlfriend and I’m a bit confused.

From the first time Mickey and Ian had sex, my girlfriend was so giddy and excited and kept telling me that Mickey and Ian are “her favorite couple in the show.” And I’ve heard A LOT of fans echo that same idea. I think a very large majority of fans of the show would also say that they love them together.

However, from my point of view, they seem like one of the most toxic and physically and mentally abusive relationships that I’ve ever seen on Television. Ian forces Mickey to come out in a public space full of violent homophobic people. This is reckless and also very fucked up. Then, we have the fact that Mickey was raised by Terry who is a literal Nazi. I would hope that Mickey rejects a lot of that ideology but I feel like it’s safe to say that Mickey likely holds some racist views. This combined with the fact that they both frequently cheat on other as a means to make the other person jealous and thus get what they want which is obviously toxic behavior.

But the worst part by far is how often they beat each other. Literally every other episode they get into a legitimate fist fight. But just because they’re two men physical abuse is okay? When Ian didn’t want to sign marriage papers so Mickey punched him in the face it’s supposed to be seen as a normal couple argument? If Sean or Gus had punched Fiona in the face and knocked her down a flight of stairs I don’t think people would romanticize their relationship, so why is it okay when Mickey and Ian beat each other constantly?

I understand that the show is meant to display the raw and often cruel world that we all have the displeasure of inhabiting, but I can’t for the life of me understand why Mickey and Ian are so loved as a couple. I really like both characters as individuals but as a couple, they are so grossly toxic, abusive, and manipulative towards each other.

liams end was the saddest

spoiler for the end

i feel really bad for liam because with frank dying at the end, and everyone moving on from the gallagher house, hes all alone. my heart was aching for him when he thought his siblings were going to leave him to be homeless! theyre all terrible for not checking up on him, no one even cared about him enough to see that he was gone for days at the end of s9. seeing the kid feeling lonely like that was so sad

Who would you date in shameless?

Genuine question, if u HAD to date someone from shameless. Who would you date?

Personally I’d choose lip, not because I think he’s a good boyfriend or that the relationship would end up well. But because I have had the biggest crush on him since high school. Terrible reason, but it’s my reason.

Lip appreciation (season 9 spoilers)

Holy shit. I just finished season 9 episode 3 and OMG. I almost cried. What Lip did for Xan was beautiful. And even though it tore him up, he gave her neck to her mom AND gave her mom that money. It killed me when he threw the money down and ran off at but that was so sweet of Lip. I know people say he gets worse, but I'm talking about this storyline. He cared for her and was ready to adopt her and he gave her up because he saw how happy she was to be with her mom. Her mom might not have been the best but she loves her, and that's clear. This was such an adorable thing to include and I'm so happy they put this storyline in! Ik it wasn't long but it was amazing! It truly shows how kind Lip can be and I appreciate the writers for this. THIS is the Lip I love.

lip and debbie wanted to act like they were fiona at the end

i know this might be cuz of the writers' pettiness to not mention fiona, but lip and debbie were literally trying to act like they were fiona and it was pissing me off so bad. first of all, yes i know debbie was doing the bill stuff and doing things around the house, but she in no way at all was sacrificing anything the way fiona had to. she didnt have to work multiple jobs and take care of 5 kids. she had one kid and she basically ignored liam cuz he was older ( but he was still a kid!). now lip, he was so annoying because he was acting like he did so much for that family when he didnt even live in that house for majority of s11. he wasnt there at all for liam until the last moments. he didnt even do anything remotely fiona-like for the family. debbie did more than he did, and yet he had the nerve to be bossy about selling the house

all of Carl's girlfriends were terrible, bonnie was ok but like they were 12

carl deserved a girl who would match his badass personality, but also who would want the best to him, he deserved someone just like mandy

the only pretty gf he had in my opnion was kassidi, i liked them together but she wasnt really nice

im not shipping mandy and carl obviously, she was already dating lip when carl was 9 i guess

Veronica, season 5, and the twins

Does Veronica ever love her twins? Was she resentful towards them? I'm currently on season 5 ep 5 and Kevin got a handy that she asked him to do, he comes home they talk and she gave him an ultimatum to choose between her and the twins. I guess I just want to discuss your guy's thoughts.

things I didn't catch the first time and realized only on 2nd/3rd viewing

Upon rewatching, I realized Shameless is a lot smarter than I gave it credit for. Since I know some of you guys have seen the show multiple times, are there details that stuck out to you or changed your perspective of the show/characters?

Personally I enjoy analyzing TV from a literary/psychological standpoint, so I wrote down some of my observations below. It’s a bit of a long read, but I’d love to hear your thoughts:

  • fiona's crashout in s9 draws heavy references to icarus. this surprised me because I assumed lip was the sibling with thwarted ambition but in this season it's fiona who flies too close to the sun and falls victim to her own hubris (whereas lip's ordeals seem more sisyphean in nature because he can never catch a break)
  • debbie and lip are total opposites as parents
  • what the show does with jimmy-steve is a deconstruction of the "nice guy meets manic pixie dream girl" trope from 2000s rom-coms
  • frank is the most well-rounded out of the gallaghers: he can play the piano, he speaks multiple languages (spanish, armenian, japanese), he's read james joyce, he went to northwestern, etc.
  • fiona, lip, and ian share the most narrative parallels with frank through s7-s11. debbie bears the closest resemblance to monica in the end. carl and liam "inherit" the storylines of their older brothers without getting their emotional baggage/traumas
  • ian and frank's storylines mirror each other in s8, where the loss of their beloved compels them to put on false personas with religious overtones (saint francis = gay jesus). this parallel runs all the way up to 9x06
  • the show reaches shakespearean heights every time ian and mickey are onscreen. ("two households, both alike in dignity" = milkovich/gallagher rivalry) their families keep telling them not to be together, but they say screw that!
  • mickey accidentally enabling his move to the west side will never not be funny
  • I didn't like tami at first, then came around to her eventually. i think she's as good as it's going to get for lip. she's actually so patient with him considering he keeps wanting to take shortcuts (tami: "sell the house, sell the indian... why not just get a job?" 😭)
  • mark mylod directed seasons 1-4 of shameless before working on hbo's succession and you can see it in the shaky, immersive camerawork. as a fan of both shows, it just blows my mind

I think Kelly was the greatest thing to happen to Carl.

Kelly was the greatest thing to happen to Carl and Debbie, stupid bitch that she is, is really fucking that up. She should be helping her brother get back with Kelly, but instead she’s having the time of her life with Kelly being friends. Obviously she’s in love with her, but that’s still fucked up what she’s doing. I’m on season 9 EP 12. She’s such a bitch for what she’s doing with Kelly against Carl.

1st watch update- Finished it

My boyfriend and i finished watching shameless on Thursday night.

yes i cried, also idk how i feel about it because i just expected a little…. more? More ends not left to interpretation i suppose

Idk i just feel like it was abrupt.

Thoughts?

- Debbie can go fuck, I don’t even know where to start with her.

- I still love Lip Ian Mickey

- Liam 🥹 as someone who was adopted by a white family, I was v unhappy with everyone “you’re a Gallagher” 😒 when he was basically begging for someone to help him learn more about being black. abut it was v sweet how he was the only one who was trying to stay close to frank

Kev and V- Happy for their asses
