Complaint PSA that you're allowed to skip class and stay home if you don't want to learn

There are way too many people on campus, limited study spots, no parking. Why are all my lectures full of people yapping? Especially if they're recorded and attendance isn't recorded. Also since there is literally no study spaces, people are using designated silent spaces as a place to chat with their friends.

Like you don't have to come to campus! Let those that actually want to learn the space to do so please!!! Its basic human decency!

Complaint Body Odour Neglect PHIL 120W

I did not escape death by beating cancer to suffer in my philosophy class from someone’s disregard for hygiene. I don’t know this females name, nor do I remember what she looks like, but for the love of god I hope you know the duress you have made my nose go through. I unfortunately sat next to you for the first week of lecture and I vowed myself to avoid you at all times. You smelt like sweated onions every time you moved your arms. I was dying inside. I almost felt like I was punished for being alive. My poor friends last week had the unfortunate chance of sitting behind you and they nearly shed tears. This isn’t an isolated incident. It’s bad. Chemo has made my hair fall out, you’ve burnt my nostril hair off. Everything else seems to be okay, you seemed clean otherwise. Just carry a stick of deodorant with you, wherever you go. This goes for everyone, idc how clean you think you are, wear deodorant

Discussion No idea how to catch up to my classes while sick

Hi everyone,

I’ve been sick for the past 2 weeks and I fell really behind on school. While I did try to push on and continue keeping up with my courses, I think there’s a limit to how much work I can get done in a day while sick. I don’t see any sign of recovery as well possibly due to me working while sick. I also work part time.

I was wondering if anyone had any advices cuz I’m pretty overwhelmed right now. Thank you.

Discussion Halloween SFU

Does anything happen at SFU during Halloween? I have never done anything for it but this time I’m in the mood. Do people dress up on campus? I doubt it’ll be open on that day though. What do students do to celebrate Halloween?

Discussion I revived SFU confessions

SFU confessions is back on Instagram: @sfu.confessions.ca.

I keep getting followed by new confession pages, getting excited that they're back, and then watching them go quiet again. I wanted to give it another go.

I'm a CS student and made Looseword, a free site to go with the pages. The Google Form syncs to Looseword automatically, so you can read approved confessions there between Instagram batches. You can read the old SFU archives and reply to posts there too.

I want the instagram page to post automatically once it has five or more approved confessions ready, with gaps between batches so we don't take over your feed. And also so the account doesn't just go dark during exam season or randomly.

If you've got your own confessions or stories, send them here!

If anything's broken or you've got suggestions, let me know.

PS: These are new independent pages. Older posts on the site are marked as archives.

Question How to get involved in research as an undergrad?

So I was scrolling through my department’s faculty page because i was bored i guess. and one prof has an active study going that literally applies the content im learning in my degree with a legitimate strong hobby and passion of mine.

ive never had this prof before because they only teach upper division courses (and they’re actually not teaching any courses this year) and im only in my second year. when i go to the study website, they only have phd and masters students who have this prof as a supervisor. and the contact page only mentions “are you interested in opportunities to join the team as a phd student”.

im genuinely super interested in this subject though. And i know people say to just email and ask, but would that be appropriate to do? Because i mean… im an undergrad and their website only has graduate students on the team. And I’ve never had this prof. Should i wait until next year or something when i have a little more knowledge in my degree and maybe have taken one of this prof’s courses before reaching out? This prob reads as so desperate 😭😭

Question Can I still pursue accounting ???

I’m currently a student at SFU Beedie and I’m hoping to pursue accounting, but lately I’ve been feeling really discouraged about my academic performance.
My current CGPA is around 2.5, and I got a C in BUS 251 and a C+ in BUS 254. I’ve been dealing with a lot of stress trying to pay my own tuition and cover school expenses, and I feel like it’s been affecting my grades. I just started upper division courses
I genuinely want to pursue accounting and eventually build a successful career, but I’m worried that my GPA and these grades might make it difficult to get internships or find a job after graduation.
For those who studied accounting or work in the accounting field, how much does GPA actually matter when applying for entry-level accounting jobs? Is it still possible to get hired with a 2.5 CGPA, improve my chances through work experience, and eventually pursue the CPA designation?
I’m not expecting everything to be easy, but I want to know realistically whether I still have a good chance of building a successful career in accounting or if I should reconsider my plans.
I’d really appreciate any honest advice from people who’ve been in a similar situation. Thank you!

Question Can i leave my bag somewhere safe while I attend a conference for the day?

I am a grad student coming to Vancouver to attend a 1 day conference. I was planning to stay the night at Vancouver airport because the conference ends at 8pm and my flight back is the next morning (dont want to splurge on a hotel). I'm bringing a gym bag with just a change of clothes and some toiletries, but I don't want to carry it to the conference and it'll look unprofessional as well carrying it around, is there somewhere safe on the campus where I can drop my bag off in the morning and pick it up after the conference? I am also willing to pay someone to leave it at their dorm and pick it up later. Would anyone be willing to do this?

The conference is close to SFU campus which is why i am asking here

Question Does taking extra TA work increase your guaranteed minimum funding at SFU?

Hi! I'm starting my MASc in Engineering Science at SFU soon, and my offer includes guaranteed funding for two years.

I know this funding can come from different sources, including TA positions, but I'm a bit confused about how it works.

If I take on extra TA work, would that be paid on top of my guaranteed funding, or would it just replace part of what I'm already getting?

Also, how many TA positions do grad students usually take per semester? I'm trying to figure out if taking on more TA work is a realistic way to earn some extra money.

Would love to hear from anyone who's been in a similar situation. Thanks!

Discussion Maclean's University Ranking 2027 - SFU's true place?

For nearly 30 years, the "Comprehensive" tier belonged to SFU, UVic, Guelph, and Waterloo, with Waterloo always locked in the top three. Now that Maclean’s has ditched the old categories for strict size brackets, Waterloo jumped to the "Large" tier, landing a solid 4th. Meanwhile, former medical-doctoral heavyweights like Saskatchewan and Manitoba have slipped way below SFU and UVic.

This year, Maclean’s only counts full-time equivalents, totally ignoring part-time students. SFU has a massive part-time commuter base. If you factor in raw headcount, SFU clears 37,000 students—instantly bypassing Queen’s and McMaster, and sitting right on McGill’s heels.

If the rankings actually counted every warm body on campus, SFU wouldn't be big-fishing the mid-size pond. It would be a top-five giant in the large university tier.

Suggestion BA in health science or psychology?

I’m planning on majoring in one of these with the hopes of doing an internal transfer to business or kinesiology since I couldn’t get a spot in pre calc 12. which would be easier?

Discussion realizing i hate my degree

i'm a 3rd year computer science major and i'm just sick of this program. I feel like i never actually apply all the theory i learn from classes into actual code or projects or anything of substance. so many of these profs have no idea how to actually teach the class or make ridiculously hard midterms and tests. I feel like i'm just doing this all of nothing bc my degree won't even guarantee me a job and it's sucking the life out of me. I got no idea what to do from this point in my life now any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

edit: to everyone saying "just make projects outside of class" I do with the very little time I have left outside of these classes. It helps but still doesn't make me hate my classes and degree any less than i do. Also i'm in the process of a co-op. Which also doesn't address the core issue here that i hate my degree.

Question How does the psychology arts program work

Hi, I am a current high school senior and I would like some advice on how the psychology arts program works. I want to head to med school after undergrad and i know that doing the science program is probably better but I know calculus and the heavy math would bring my GPA down which is very crucial for med school.

So I am thinking of taking psychology arts (cuz im stronger in writing and English) and then have fundamental MCAT courses like bio, chem and physics as electives, alongside sociology. I just want to know if it is a realistic pathway.🙂

Thank you

Discussion Back to back exams?

First year so sorry If I’m being dumb and just gotta toughen up.
I have 2 final exams on a Saturday 8:30-11:30 another 12-15 and the following day one at 12 pm (also 3 hours).

They’re not all technically within a 24h period (it’s 28h from start of first exam to start of third). Is there anything I can do other than start studying way in advance? Thank you and sorry if it’s a stupid question.

Question Hum 130 with Jason Brown

Hey everyone! I’m preparing for my HUM 130 midterm and feeling a bit overwhelmed trying to figure out what to focus on while studying.

For those who have taken it:

  • What does the midterm format usually look like? Is it heavily focused on terminology/definitions, or is it mostly long written responses?
  • How important is it to memorize all the textbook concepts vs. focusing on lecture material?
  • Any tips on what core topics or themes I should prioritize?

Discussion Macm 101

Is there any courses harder than macm 101 in the cs degree, because I’m pretty sure this one is the hardest. This course feels impossible to do. If I can just squeeze by this I’ll hopefully be fine

Discussion to the people in PDP right now, *be honest* how do you find the program so far ?

I have talked to many other students and have friends in other PLC’s and I feel like amongst us, we can collectively say that the first semester is not what we expected. I get it, it’s important as educators to get in the loop of all things sociology. I have learned a lot and it’s great. I just wish that we would also spend a lot more time doing other things, like lesson planning, classroom management, etc. How is making arts and crafts going to help me in my career? I feel like the only one who feels this. Everyone in my class loves the content and act like they love and breathe this. Don’t get me wrong I love teaching too. Just not to that extent.

I sometimes wish I didn’t reject UBC. I heard that the lectures and course material are a lot more organized. We talk a lot about inclusive learning, yet the presentators forget to speech to text on their presentations or the microphones do not work. Canvas is sometimes not welel organized too.

I won’t share my PLC. I just go in the afternoons. Maybe the vibes are different in the morning. You tell me.

Edit: English is not my first language
